I’d been wanting to try out Hot Rocks for a while having heard about it from friends nearby. This restaurant previously called Smooch is located in Winchmore Hill in North London. It was the perfect place for my friend and I to dine and catch up. This restaurant serves a range of steak and seafood, some of which can be served either on a plate or on volcanic rocks. A gimmick that I am sure will be popular with many for the novelty factor. But, what did we think if Hot Rocks Restaurant? Have a read to find out and drool over my yummy photos.
Hot Rocks Restaurant Review
The Restaurant
The restaurant itself isn’t particularly large and when we went in the evening it was dimly lit. The staff were friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable.

Time for Drinks
To begin, we ordered cocktails, as who doesn’t love a cocktail with a meal!!
My friend had an Aperol Spritz, and I had a Pina Colada. Both were well made and there wasn’t too much or too little alcohol, they were spot on.

Whilst we sat and waited for the mains, the waiter kindly brought out a bread basket and a selection of dips and olives on the house. This was so sweet and a really lovely touch. A great way to entice people to return, that’s for sure!
The dips consisted of a hummus, beetroot hummus. Both were very yummy and they were a good accompaniment to enjoy with our drinks.
Food Choices
The menu is varied. It’s important to note they have a different day and night menu. For lunch you would be looking at a variety of brunch style dishes including: normal, plant based and vegetarian full English, various egg dishes, pancakes, waffles and more.
For dinner they offer a range of steak options on or off the hot rocks, burgers, salads, chicken and fish dishes etc.
Starters
We decided to share a starter and selected the:
Burrata
Creamy pesto-stuffed burrata cheese on a bed of fresh cherry tomatoes, drizzled with red wine vinegar, and topped with finely sliced red onion
This was a lovely, light dish full of plenty of fresh flavours. It’s a good sized portion and a good one that is perfect to share. The burrata is a great start to a meal and wakes those tastebuds up and gets the digestive juices flowing.
Main
Fillet Steak with Peppercorn Sauce
Both of us fancied trying the fillet steak. This comes with your choice of sauce or butter from a selection of 6. It also comes with one side from a selection of 7 options. As the steak came with a salad already we opted for a portion of fries each.
We asked for our main to come in a plate rather than a hot rock. Our steaks as requested were medium rare. Although it is down to personal preference, this is the suggested cooking level to enjoy your steak at its best. At this cooking level, steak is supposed to be at its most tender, although it wasn’t as tender as expected which was a little disappointing. The peppercorn sauce that we selected to accompany this was nice, although not the best I have had. The portion size was good.
The salad was lovely and very fresh, no wilting leaves etc. It had a yummy dressing and we polished off every single morsel. The chips were yummy too and were nice and hot when served.
Summary
All in all we did have a nice evening. The food at Hot Rocks restaurant on the whole was good but I was reminded why I don’t normally eat steak out and prefer my own with my homemade sauce. Home made can be better once you have gotten used to making a dish.

All of that food looks so good! I know the burrata is an appetizer, but I could make an entire meal out of it!

Regardless of your disappointment with the steak, it looks like you still had a wonderful outing. I appreciate a restaurant that takes care in the presentation of their dishes, and it seems this place does just that.

Mmmm I am definitely drooling all over my screen because wow! those are some delicious goodies! That’s a bummer that the steak wasn’t the best you’ve had but it’s so cool that you had a chance to try it. In fact, I wouldn’t mind trying Hot Rocks Restaurant to experience it for myself!

I have not heard of this restaurant but I must say I like the look of their menu

It must have been nice to catch up with your friend, even if the steak wasn’t quite perfect. Last time I had steak out, it was disappointing. My husband always cooks it perfectly!
