I’ve been trying to eat out more at different restaurants after realising my friends and I always seem to gravitate towards the same ones. Let’s face it, it can be a bit boring when you have the same menu options for food and drinks eat time you go out. It was suggested that we dine at Bramleys restaurant in Oakwood for a birthday celebration. Keen to try something different we all jumped at the chance. The Google rating for the restaurant is great with 4.7 stars out of 5 and currently 280 reviews (19/04/2023).
Bramleys Restaurant Oakwood (review)
The restaurant itself is located on the corner of a stretch with other restaurants and shops. There is parking in the surrounding area. Although, if you go on a Saturday be warned, you might not find parking particularly close by. The restaurant has been beautifully decorated and is one of those places designed for plenty of selfies if you’re that way inclined. It has the sort of decoration you’d expect in the West End. It definitely had an upmarket feel to it. Personally, I was there to try the food. I do love to try new restaurants. The restaurant wasn’t very busy on arrival but soon filled up.
Food
There are a varied selection of food options available at Bramleys Restaurant. These are geared mainly toward meat and fish eaters. You’ll find 3 vegetarian starter options and 2 vegetarian mains. The menu has a mix of dishes that a seasoned foodie would assume would be popular amongst diners. You’ll find a limited selection of main options as well as burgers. The burgers seem to be aimed at gourmet diners and the prices reflect this.
Starters
Calamari with Tartar Sauce
The portion size was reasonable and the batter coating the squid was tasty. The squid rings on the top were all great. The batter was pretty crispy. The batter on the ones at the bottom had a more soggy texture. It was surprising as one might have expected them all to be crispy. I can only assume they took a while to bring them out as they were not particularly hot when served. I’d also question whether the calamari was fresh or the more likely frozen variety.
King Prawns in Bang Bang Sauce
The prawns were coated in breadcrumbs and deep fried. They were lovely and plump and juicy. The sauce was interesting. Not something I’ve had before but I’ve since learnt it’s made of a combination of mayo, sweet chilli sauce, siracha and either lime or vinegar. It’s certainly different and something you’d probably want to share as a starter with others as the whole dish on its own for one can be a bit much due to the sauce.
Mains
Between the group, we tried the following dishes:
Steak burger / Surf & Turf burger
Both burgers were a good size. These had a reasonable portion of meat as well as extremely fresh lettuce and tomato. It was a considerable size and both those that ordered them had to take them apart and eat sections as there was no way they were getting them into their mouths the size they were served. The burgers tasted delicious and are something I’d love to try myself if we visit again. The surf and turf burger’s main difference was that it had a prawn. The diner that ordered this wasn’t particularly impressed by the size of the prawn they found in the burger.
It’s important to be aware, burgers came on their own. If you wanted a side they were extra. You’ll find you will end up paying approximately £20 for a burger and chips. A bit steep when up the road in Southgate you can get a really good burger from Band of Burgers for around £10, adding chips makes it around £13. I’d suggest Bramleys add chips to serve along with the burger to make the price a bit more reasonable for the portion given.
Moussaka (Meat ) with Salad Garnish
The portion was big!!! The person that ordered this had a real mission ahead of them trying to finish the whole dish. They did struggle to eat it all but thoroughly enjoyed the mousaka. It was rich in flavour and had a good proportion of meat to veg. A lovely version of the dish although the salad beside it was a little uninspired. A simple makeover with a few additional items and a dressing (on the side) would make the dish perfect.
Sea Bass Fillet, Truffled Pea Puree & Greens
This dish was beautifully presented dish. Again, a great portion size. There were plenty of great fresh flavours on the plate. The greens were perfectly cooked and still vibrant in colour. They also had a bite to them indicating they hadn’t been overcooked. The pea puree was flavourful and the fish itself was cooked to perfection. It was a lovely dish and very filling. Perfect for anyone wanting a tasty and healthy meal.
Desserts
Bramleys Apple Mousse
An interesting twist for a dessert. This Bramleys apple mousse is the restaurant’s signature dessert. Within the mousse is a delicious cooked apple and cinnamon blend. The mousse is extremely light, presented in the shape of an apple, and served on a bed of ginger crumb. This has dark chocolate pieces and berries to add texture and flavour to the dish. The berries were bland but the rest of the dish made up for this. A must try! What a great idea. A clever design, with spot on presentation.
Raspberry Crème Brûlée
The creme brulee is a lovely rich creamy dessert. This is the perfect option for anyone that loves something that is sweet and that melts in the mouth. Ideal for any dessert lover. It’s just the right portion size to satisfy a sweet craving. I noticed that it was there one minute and gone the next. Clearly my friend thoroughly enjoyed it.
Drinks
There are a range of drinks available. These include a number of much loved favourites as well as some other lesser known options. You’ll be delighted to know they have a reasonable number of wines, cocktails and mocktails for your drinking pleasure.
Pina Colada
This went down well. It was well made with a fair amount of alcohol. It beat the watery cocktail I’d had elsewhere just a week ago. I’d had enjoyed it even more if there was less ice and froth and served in a tall glass with a little more actual cocktail. A fair enough request given the price.

Music
There was music playing in the background although this was a bit overwhelming thanks to the speaker next to us. It was difficult to hear each other making it necessary to shout to be heard which was frustrating after a while.
Service
Staff were friendly and keen to help. When we first arrived they were very attentive. At one stage the restaurant did get quite busy with almost every table full. As a result, the speed of service slowed temporarily. After that, they were back on the case. This wouldn’t let that affect our visiting again.
Summary
Overall, we did have a nice meal and a great evening at Bramleys Restaurant. I’m not sure there are enough main options on the restaurant that would excite me, but then I am quite fussy. I would consider trying their burgers, although those are on the pricy side as they don’t even include fries. Then again you are paying for the fresh good quality ingredients, trendy setting and relaxed ambience. It is worth visiting and trying the food, just make sure they don’t seat you near any speakers.

Bramley’s restaurant in Oakwood looks like a hot spot to hit for an evening out! The dishes look delightful and are well plated and I love the atmosphere, I’ll have to try to visit this restaurant soon!

Everything looks good, it is difficult to choose although I would probably want that sea bass fillet. When we visit a restaurant for the first time, I am very particular about service. Sometimes the food they offer is great, but if the service is horrible, we’d think twice if we’d go back to the place a second time. Thanks for your review of Bramleys Oakwood. It looks lovely here, and its nice to go somewhere different with friends, I get what you mean about the music blaring, and not beong able to talk. That is something that can spoil an evening out.
It is something they can easily fix luckily.
Don’t worry, I’m a fussy eater too. I’m quite a plain eater but I am getting better as I get older. I would probably try one of the burgers

A bit of a hit and miss I’ll say and looks like they need to work on getting better seafood. Maybe fresher calamari and bigger prawns if you’re paying over £20 for burger and chips. Seriously though, what happened to the price of burger and chips?? I blame Burger and Lobster for that trend starting that trend of pricing a burger the same price as a lobster. The profit margins are way too high!! Thank goodness for Honest burger who make great burgers with chips at more reasonable prices
There are places that charge less. It seems this place is very much about the way it looks and being a “place to be seen” hopefully they can maintain the momentum.
