Collaborative post. Being a manager of a company isn’t always the easiest job. It takes time to develop the necessary skills to manage a business and people. Making the effort to do so has its benefits for you and your staff. In this post, I draw on my extensive experience in management to help guide those looking to take on a managerial position. We will look at the basics of how to be a good manager.
How To Be A Good Manager
There are various things that you will need to consider if you want to manage a business. In some cases, it’s something that you will work up to. In order to be considered for such a position, it is important for you to make sure you have developed the necessary skills and also have the qualifications required.
Suitable Qualifications
It’s not often that you can work up to a position without also gaining qualifications to make sure that you are prepared to take on the role. The first thing you’ll need to do is research the various courses available. STL management courses cover different levels of training. Looking up companies like this that have an excellent Trust Pilot rating will help guide you in finding just the right option for you. Learn the basics and use that to develop your skills further. There are different levels of training that you may need to cover. Make sure you do this early on. It’s important to remember that those that display an aptitude for the role are more likely to be offered the position.
Working Well With Others
In order to be a good manager, you need to be able to work well with others. It’s not always easy to do. Quite often you’ll come up against strong personalities. You will need to have the confidence to hold your own in a discussion and to be able to think on your feet. It is also important to have your staffs respect. This is not earnt through overly aggressive or passive behaviour. Team building exercises can be a useful tool to help the team work better together. It helps boost interaction between staff members and improves efficiency.
Where you can bring out the best in people you become an indispensable asset to the company where you work. In order to do this, you need to make staff feel appreciated. If staff feel valued in their job role they will be happier and will work better. It also means you will have a low staff turn over which benefits the business with the experience that staff will gain and the value this brings to the company.
Communication Skills
I’ve come across individuals that want to succeed and for all intents and purposes could, if their communication skills were better. Good communication skills will greatly benefit you as a person as well as the business for which you are working. The main elements include listening, conveying information clearly orally and in written form.
Delegating Tasks
Quite often when I started out as a manager I wanted to do everything I could myself. This way the work was done correctly and efficiently. The problem with that is you end up burning the candle at both ends. You will find that the workload doesn’t seem so overwhelming when you are able to delegate parts to other staff. Being a manager isn’t about doing everything yourself. Part of the role involves allocating staff work based on their strengths and making sure it’s done well by the team.
Setting Clear Goals
When goals are laid out in a clear concise manner it makes it easier for staff to understand what is expected. They can then complete work given to the level requested and in the time given. If you don’t prioritise pieces of work and give deadlines then projects may not be completed within the required timeframe. Staff work best when given adequate guidance. Not providing this affects your ability to manage them and their work output efficiently.
Adaptability
We all need to be able to demonstrate some degree of flexibility within our work. When something comes up and the work requirements change you’ll need to be able to recognise this and also adjust to allow for the required changes. It is important for us to be able to adapt when the need should arise. Not only will it benefit the quality of the work produced it will also mean you are able to reduce the stress that a more rigid individual will be faced with.
I hope you’ve found my post on how to be a good manager interesting. It covers the basics of the skills that you will need and areas where you can look to develop.
Are there any suggestions that you would add to the post? Are you in a managerial position already or is this something you would like to work up to?

I really loved reading this. It had some excellent points. I used to work in an office, and I can tell you, a few of my bosses could have stood to read this.
Ha, tell me about it. I know some people that really are not capable of doing their jobs properly.
Nowadays it is the most popular and necessary profile and topic. I think it will be useful information. Good job!
Thanks so much. I’m glad you enjoyed the post.
A good manager needs to be able to work with others. If your employees don’t like you it is not a good thing.
That’s very true. Nothing beats a good manager.
This is a wonderful post. I think everyone should read this, especially if you’re a manager. You should definitely know how to work well with others.
Working well with others is key for getting things done and making sure staff are productive.
Yep, communication skills are really important. You have to have a good relationship with your staff. Delegating tasks is also a must.
It helps to build a good relationship over time.
I am a small manager of my online blog. I have a few workers under myself. I think the topics you chose to write about are on spot. Saving money on products for my blog allows me to spend more on my workers.
That’s great to hear. It does help to be able to offer a good wage.
Working well with others is so important especially if you manage people. It takes up skills and patience being a manager
It sure does. Not everyone is up to the job.
I agree, a good manager should be able to work with others well. This is the most important thing. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Fransic. It does make everything easier if they work well with others.
Having worked as a manager for more than 15 years, I think communication is the quality I see most lacking in other managers. Something as simple as notifying your team about the fact that you’re leaving a little early today, or sending a quick email about a change in policy and how it could impact them. These are simple actions to take, but it is surprising how many managers fail in this regard.
There are many that don’t communicate well in both business and relationships and as a result it results in miscommunication and causes problems.
This is such a really great and very informative post, I will share this to my sister who is planning to apply for a manager position in their company. This will help a lot!
I wish her luck. I hope she finds the post helpful.
Loving this post. Thanks for sharing. Also, Amazing tips!! Good to learn about it
Thanks so much, I’m glad you liked the post.
I think setting clear goals is key for a manager! Your staff needs to be 100% clear what is expected of them!
That is very true. I’ve seen it before where managers are not clear with what they want and staff are scared to ask.
I am so agree wit you. These are wonderful advice. In my short term management experience the hardest thing was working well with some people. Not with everyone is easy to work so a manager need to have special qualities
They do need to have the right qualities but that can also include getting in the right staff.
Some really great insights and I agree with you. Clear instructions, objectives and goal can improve communications and they are very important.
Thanks Kenny. If you are clear everyone knows what to do and there can’t be any confusion.
I spent the last 15 years as a middle manager for a school district. I agree with your points. I also think that a good leader has the ability to show how important the front-line workers are.
We all need to be respectful of other staff members.
I am currently my own manager. 🙂 But I used to work in the corporate world and I’ve had experience having a good manager as well as having a not so good of a manager. Working well with others and having good communication skills are important to be a good manager, for sure.
They certainly are and can help a business work efficiently.
Yes to the strong personalities! So many people see only their point of view, it takes a great neutral but still caring voice to get someone to see things from the point of the company as a whole.
It’s important to be able to listen to others and consider others ideas in business.
Really good info here. I think of sending this post to my manager.. Hope that he can understand, hehe.
Lol, oh dear. I hope that works out well for you x
These are all very great tips, thank you for sharing.
Thanks Barb x
