How to Style a Midi Dress

A midi dress is a dress that falls to the mid-calf and is a wardrobe staple for any lady. For each social event we go to we have a range of suitable options to select from. Styles and colours need to be considered for suitability. For a formal function, for example, you’ll want to dress differently than you would for a day at the beach, when you might wear a midi dress over a bikini. To make things even more convenient, you can frequently swap out your accessories, shoes, and cosmetics to use the same midi for both events with no effort.

How to Style a Midi Dress

Midi Dresses have a Rich History

The midi dress has a rich history. For generations, it wasn’t an original notion to wear a dress that fell beyond your ankles. A midi dress was just a garment that had a shorter hemline. Everyone wore ankle-length dresses before the turn of the twentieth century. This was because showing your ankles was considered impolite, everyone made the investment in longer clothing. When they saw you wearing a midi dress, people automatically believed you were impoverished or working-class.

Dresses that didn’t fit properly or appeared like a midi dress were often used by the poor and working-class since they couldn’t afford to purchase new ones for their growing children. Hemlines started to become shorter in the early 1910s and ’20s, with shorter dresses being the standard for most women. Dresses shorter than your knees weren’t prevalent until the flapper dress debuted in 1927. Flappers were a group of women in their twenties who were seen as dissidents during the Roaring Twenties. Enjoying blues and jazz, cutting their hair short, and wearing knee-length skirts were all against the grain for women of their time period.

What to Wear with A Midi Dress

Midi dresses are many women’s go-to choice of clothing. There are different ways to style them which is great as it gives you flexibility depending on where you are going and what you are doing. You can easily find some midi dress guides online to help with your styling choices. Midi dresses often look great on their own. The design gives a feminine, and flattering look. Wearing them in the evening or on cooler days may mean you’ll require a cardigan or light jacket to wear alongside this. You’ll need to make sure colours don’t clash and that the style of the dress and additional items complement each other.

Don’t Forget the Jewellery

The occasion determines whether or not you should accessorize with jewellery and what to consider. Wear a necklace with a v-neck or round neck midi dress to dress it up. Add in some earrings, and maybe even a bracelet to dress it up or down depending on the pieces added. Pop on some bangles for a night out or family get-togethers. Simple necklaces work well for a casual or formal look. Opt for bold necklaces for semi-formal gatherings when you want to make an impression. If you’re wearing a high-halter midi dress, forego the necklace in favour of a colourful stack of bracelets and some coordinating earrings.

Footwear

Your outfit can be easily dressed up or down with the right footwear. The choices available are quite varied. You could opt for simple flats in the same colour as that dress or one of the colours that appears in it. Or go for chunkier footwear. Knee-high boots are a very popular option to pair with midi dresses. It does look great and also works well in cooler weather when combined with a trendy cardi or stylish light jacket. White sneakers are a universal favourite to combine these dresses with and are practical when you are out and about. You could even consider wearing a pink dress with blue shoes, and it can look great.

As someone who is rather tall, I feel like every time I’ve tried to buy a floor length dress it ends up being midi length on me. It used to really frustrate me that I couldn’t find floor length, but I’ve grown to love a good midi! I love that it’s the perfect length to show off cute shoes!
