Moissanite Rings: Affordable Engagement Rings

Moissanite Rings: Affordable Engagement Rings

Collaborative post. Many people think that when buying an engagement ring no expense should be spared. But, we all know that’s easier said than done. Have you seen the prices of mined diamonds available in stores recently? But thankfully, these days there are more options available than ever when it comes to diamonds. There is a far wider variety of options available for any that is budget conscious as well as concerned with the environmental impact that those diamonds come with. Modern technology has allowed companies to create diamonds in labs. The alternative is known as Moissanite. In this post, we look at Moissanite rings: affordable engagement rings.

Moissanite rings are an excellent alternative to conventional mined diamonds and they have many benefits. They are a more affordable and sustainable option. When opting for a moissanite ring it means that dreaming big can be a reality! I’ve collaborated with the jewellery experts at Lily Arkwright who are experts at creating lab-grown gems to tell you all about Moissanite and show you why you may prefer to opt for Moissanite engagement rings instead of mined diamonds.

Moissanite Discovery

Moissanite was first discovered in 1893 by Nobel Prize-winning scientist Dr. Henri Moissan who found small quantities of natural silicon carbide when examining rock samples from a meteor crater. The naturally existing quantities of this hard chemical compound are extremely limited. After some research scientists have found ways to recreate this stone within a lab environment.

Key Features of Moissanite?

Brilliance and Fire

Both terms that are used to describe diamonds and Moissanite. Brilliance refers to the appearance of light that is reflected from the center of the stone. This is the white sparkle that it displays. Fire refers to the colourful rainbows created when hit by light. Moissanite, in general, will give more sparkle and reflect more rainbows than diamonds and for this reason is an ideal alternative when choosing a stone for a ring whether it be an engagement ring, wedding ring, or a ring for general wear.

Durability

Moissanite is an extremely durable stone. In fact, it comes in second after diamonds in terms of durability making it the ideal stone for everyday wear. It has a Mohs score of 9.25 on the Mohs scale of hardness. To put this into perspective, a diamond which is the hardest mineral on the planet has a score of 10 and a natural blue sapphire, the same gemstone set in the infamous engagement ring worn formally by Princess Diana, and now by royal Kate Middelton measures a 9. Therefore, making moissanite is an incredibly hard and durable gemstone.

Affordability

The affordability of moissanite is one of the driving factors for why more savvy consumers are opting for moissanite as a centre stone in their engagement rings. Moissanite costs dramatically less
than diamonds, this can be anything up to 90% less than a traditional mined diamond engagement ring. Therefore, opting for a Moissanite ring provides you with more for the price! This allows you to look at selecting a larger carat or higher clarity gemstone for a lower price point.

Ethical and Sustainability Considerations

I’ve noticed that in recent years there has been a large turn towards buying products that are more sustainable and ethically sourced. When it comes to stones, they also need to be conflict-free. Moissanite gemstones are grown in labs therefore is no issue with ethical sourcing or sustainability. Therefore, they are the perfect choice when choosing a stone for a ring setting.

I love moissanite. I have never subscribed to the idea that if it’s not diamond, it’s not worth it. A person could mortgage their home for a diamond (and contribute to social injustice in the process) oooor, they could purchase moissanite and promote sustainability.

    1. admin

That’s very true. I completely agree Beth.

  2. Amber Myers

Those are very strong arguments for opting for Moissanite, quite aside from the cost factor. In the end, it is such a personal thing and will always come down to what seems right for each individual.
