The Importance of Teaching Children to Code

When it comes to your child’s education, supportive parents will help them pursue avenues that can set them up for the most success in the future. For this reason, it makes sense to find subjects that would be good for them to study. The art of coding is a great option. This post looks at the importance of teaching your children to code.

A Futureproof Career

The modern world – and the future one – is basically run by coding. You never see it, but it underlies pretty much everything that you use or do every day. You’re reading this blog post right now, well, to be able to do this, there has to be some coding written to create this website. Any app you’ve ever used has to be coded. It’s something that forms the infrastructure of the modern digital world, and it will always be essential. Therefore, you can steer your child towards a career that is futureproof.

A Lot of Diversity

Another reason you should encourage your child to take up coding is that it offers so much diversity. When you think of coding, you might only think about things like coding a website. Sure, that forms a huge aspect of the coding world, but even within this domain, there is a lot of diversity. Coding one website can be entirely different from coding another, based on what the site’s purpose is.

However, that’s not the main point, the main point is that coding exists beyond websites just websites. Look at the world of gaming. No doubt your child spends a lot of time playing video games, and they can help to create them. You have things like dirty code in video games that people specialise in, there’s general video game coding and so on. Of course, you also have apps to code. There is also an element of coding involved in smart assistant products like Alexa. Put simply, the coding world is so big that your child has a wealth of choices when deciding what to do.

A Great Average salary

It’s not just a wide choice of job options that become available, this type of work also offers a fantastic average salary. Across the UK, the average salary for coding jobs is around £47,500. In London, this goes up to £62,500. There are plenty of jobs around the country that pay above the average. So, by encouraging your child to pursue a career in this field, you’re helping them get a job that will help them make a good living.

Although a child’s education path is up to them as parents we can offer guidance.  This can be in the form of a basic knowledge in an area so they can see if it is something they enjoy and might want to pursue as a career. This will help them assess whether it is something that they are able to do and would enjoy. Children’s talents and abilities vary so much and whereas some excel in computers and technical areas some are more suited to Sciences or the arts etc.

We have purchased several coding and tech toys for the five-year-old. It’s important for kids to keep up with technology.

Honestly the younger they learn the easier they’ll find it.

  2. Sarah Bailey

I wish I had kept up with coding when I was a younger but it wasn’t such a big thing then and I just did it for fun. I think in the future it is going to be a must have skill.

    1. admin

I agree, I noticed they have started doing it in schools now.

  3. Ben

I fully support teaching the kids to code. It teaches them so many different concepts. I can’t do any sort of coding or tech stuff to save my life, and I wish I could.

I’m with you, I’m not the best at it. It’s a shame we weren’t taught it years back.

My boys learned to code when they were younger. It is a good skill to learn for the future

That’s great to hear. It’s a shame not all schools have covered it.

  5. Richelle Escat

I have heard coding so often in online jobs. So I definitely agree kids should learn how to do it.

It does make a difference to have extra skills when looking for work later in life.

I’m so glad the elementary school my boys go to work on coding in their computers class. They also have access to a few coding games that they can play at home. I think it’s so important as so many things rely on technology.

    1. admin

That’s great that they do that. It really is an important skill.

Our oldest daughter is a programmer and she enjoys her job very much. Even though my husband was a programmer as well, I don’t think he helped her learn how to code

    1. admin

It’s great to hear she enjoys what she does for a living. There are plenty of jobs in these sorts of areas.

Coding is such a good skill to have and I think it’s great that kids are starting to learn it from a young age, it’s something I’d love to learn if/ when I have time x

    1. admin

Same here but having the time is the problem.

  9. Laura le Roux

We have done some coding. Both my little ones really enjoy it!

    1. admin

It also helps with critical thinking. At it is indeed future proof

This is something I can see learning myself then passing on to my daughter or even my adult son. You never stop learning and it’s important to have skills and knowledge about a variety of things.

    1. admin

That’s very true. You never know what might come in useful.

  12. Ash

I’ve read about coding before and they do teach this in middle/high school here. My daughter has done a little, but I should be encouraging her more

    1. admin

I think some schools completely overlooked it and didn’t devote as much time as some others.

  13. Ivan M. Jose

Wow, this is very timely. I recently looked at an educational app for kids and some of the lessons for big kids include coding, so I was quite curious about it.

  14. Paula Richie

If there’s one lesson that I learned as a junior developer that I would share with others, it’s learn computer fundamentals.

I think this is something that will become the norm in schools. It wouldn’t surprise me anyway, if it happens. It’s definitely an important skill.

This is such an important thing for kids to learn, and am fascinated at how young they can learn as well, I do not understand it at all.

    1. admin

Tell me about it. As adults, we do find it harder to learn things. They have games to make it easier though.
