Improving Your Children’s Financial Future

Collaborative post. The concept of preparing for the future is a difficult one for most young children to comprehend. After all, it feels so very far away, and with no understanding of how the real world works, it’s perfectly natural for them to have no interest whatsoever in the idea of putting their pocket money away for a rainy day. However, as we know, the future can come quickly. And, before they know it, your children will be budding adults with the world at their feet and a lot of concerns resting on their young shoulders. It’s up to you to look into Improving Your Children’s Financial Future to give them the best future possible.

Improving Your Children’s Financial Future

As a parent 3 times over, I know only too well how children can have no concept of money. They want this, they want that, but if they learn to be frivolous with money then by the time they become adults they’ll have very little stability when it comes to their finances. The one of the first things my husband and I looked after the kids were born was ISA’s. We did some research to find the best ISA for kids in order to start growing their savings as early on as possible. The idea was to reduce their future burden and help them to prepare for whatever life throws their way?

Let’s look at some steps for improving your children’s financial burden. This will help keep them on a clear and stress-free path to a sound financial future.

Step 1 – Educating Your Children About Money

Developing a clear understanding of what money is and how it helps you is a vital part of a child’s formative years. This can be done in an enjoyable and educational way.

Make the act of putting money away feel fun and exciting to your child. Giving them a fun piggy bank is a good starting point to achieve this.

From the pennies they find around the house to the folding money that they see their parents use, your child will gain a better appreciation for what money is. From there, you can move into step 2, where they’ll learn why saving money is so important

Step 2 – Applying What Children Learn to Games and Chores

Once that initial understanding has been established, you can begin applying money lessons to family games, toys, and the list of chores that your child does around the house.

There are games for kids to help them learn about money through counting and even budgeting. They’ll get hands-on experience in handling fake money, increasing the connection between receiving and saving funds.

And, by listing the costs of each chore on a board at home (50p for making the bed for example), and encouraging them to tally their week’s chores, you can help them to decide what will be going into their piggy banks and what will be spent on treats.

Step 3 – Start a Savings Account and Invest in Their Future

Due to the tax-efficient nature of a Junior ISA, more parents are embracing the benefits of an ISA that empowers them to look after their children without impacting their own tax allowances.

A Junior ISA allows you to contribute a monthly amount from the day you open it right up until your child turns 18. Anyone can help to add to this fund, as long as you keep it under £9,000 annually, you’ll not incur any additional taxes to the ISA.

When your child is old enough to access it, you’ll have given them the means, education, and sensibilities to make their own choices, fully supported by the nest egg you’ve cultivated for them over the years.

Improving Your Children’s Financial Future is something you need to begin working on early on with what you teach them. This can greatly influence their ability to manage money and reduce the risk of them getting into unnecessary debt.

What do you think is important for children to be aware of that might help them with their financial future when they get older?

We have a 529 account for our daughter which we started when she was a baby. I love the suggestion of having them earn money from chores so they can practice learning how to save and spend it.

It is a good way to teach them the value of money. Some parents just spend money on children without teaching them and when they get older they don’t get why they can’t afford things. Glad you have set up an account, it’ll help as you can pay into it when you have funds to add.

  2. Beth

These are great ideas! I think it’s pure genius to make learning about finances into fun games.

Yes, educating kids about money is a must. A lot of parents skip this and then the kids go out into the world and spend money they do not have. I always teach my kids to be careful with their funds!

I think this is such an important topic. Kids being able to save their money is so important. My daughters already know all about saving, and they’re both doing a great job with saving their money too. They have it all in the bank right now.

That’s great to hear. These days they need to have savings to help get them through further education etc.

  9. Jennifer H

It’s so important to teach them young. My boys already keep track of their allowance in a checkbook so they know how much they have to spend.

    1. admin

That’s good and that way they get an idea of how much things cost too and how much they need to save to be able to buy certain types of items.

  16. Kacie Morgan

I know my parents always meant well, but I do wish they’d tried to teach me more about finances. I didn’t start saving until I was a teen and even then, it wasn’t much.

  17. Chad

That is awesome and on point. I am always getting educational toys and games for the kids that would help them learn finances and logic.

Such an educational post on ISA savings for kids, something I need to speak more to my kids about and teach them about saving from a young age

  22. Melissa Cushing

This is so important for sure! I wish they had taught us about financial anything when I was in school. It would have saved me a lot of grief LOL as I learned the hard way when I was younger.

  23. Tammy

  26. Kira Kira

We definitely need to invest in talking to the girls more about money and perhaps opening up some kind of savings for them

  27. Heather

We’ve been teaching our girls about money since they were toddlers. It’s helped for us to give them an allowance and have them use their own money for things they want.

  28. Stephanie

My boys get a monthly allowance for doing their chores and we also have a monthly transfer to their savings account. We are working on teaching them about money, too. It’s so important!

    1. admin

It sure is and can help them so much when they are older with money management.

  29. Maureen

Such an important topic! We have a savings account set up for my son. Additionally, we have him do chores for things he wants to buy. That way he learns that money doesn’t grow from trees and has to be earned. Lastly, I remind him of all the things he has and why he doesn’t need another toy.

    Maureen

  30. Krystle

We need to do a better job about this. Thanks for the tip to use games.

  31. Kelly Bolen

Great post and tips! We helped out kids buy a condo before prices skyrocketed! Best investment we could have helped them with!

  32. Colleen

Educating kids about money is always a good start. Either talking about it or showing examples makes a huge difference for them to grow up knowing the value of money, and the importance of saving.

  33. Ntensibe Edgar

Nnnniiiiccceeee…my addition would be for them to only buy what they really need and not just what they want. Wants are so much more expensive than needs, when you get to enter your spending in the spreadsheet!

  34. Ivan Carlo Jose

This is true. I’m a firm believer that we should expose our children to savings and investments early on.

  35. Marysa

It is good to make sure to think about the future. Financial strategies are always good to incorporate into life.

  36. May

Yes to teaching kids finances early! I allowed my kids to take on paying projects (voice over for ads, professional theatre) so they can experience how to earn money early and we made them fill out the forms at the bank and at the insurance company when they deposited their earnings. There’s nothing like real life experiences for learning about money!

  37. Fransic verso

A great thing to educate your kids about money. That will help them when they grow up. Thank you for sharing these great things.

  38. Saïda

Amazing read! Thank you for sharing.

  39. Tameka H

Yeah, a lot of parents don’t understand how important it is to actually teach your child finance management. Kids grow up and just have such a hard time because they have no practical experiences

  40. Pinay

It’s good to teach your kids how to handle financial stuff and those are some great ideas to keep in mind.

  41. Nish

Teaching children financial literacy is key. We do these things at home, but I wish it were also a subject at school. What to do with money, how to invest, etc. Sometimes advice works much better when it comes from a formal authority.

  42. Saïda

Couldn’t agree with you more! Beginning early with teaching about finances towards children helps a lot with their financial growth. Getting familiar with it early on benefits them, they would know how to spend money and save it. Instead of spending it for no particular reason, or even over save it!

Loved the tips you shared! I’m definitely into getting pennies for doing chores. It teach them to work and that their hard work pays off, which means that they can have/use this vision their whole life!
