(Collaborative Post) Children are naturally curious and love to explore and experiment. This is why many children will find science extremely fascinating and in many cases really good fun. Science helps to encourage curiosity, problem solving and sparks new ideas. Most importantly, science gives children a better understanding of how the world works. By making science interesting to a child at a young age, you can improve their chances of greater success later in life. I noticed that the better schools will make sure that they cover a good range of topics in science lessons. This post looks at Helping Your Child Develop a Love of Science as there are plenty of simple things parents can do.
Helping Your Child Develop a Love of Science
Make Science Interactive
Build your child’s scientific thinking skills by exploring their own questions and ideas and engaging them in activities. For example, if your child asks you about night and day, you could show them how the Earth orbits the Sun and the Moon orbits the Earth using a globe and a torch. If they ask you how flowers grow you could get them to plant seeds in the garden. Then tell them about the lifecycle of that plant. The trick is to always make learning science interactive and fun!
Science Kits
You can get all sorts of great science kits from toy stores. Places like Trends UK have some really good ones that are easy to use. They have a range of items to suit various age groups so you can try out different experiments and show your children how science can be good fun and interesting. My children always love doing experiments at home and we’ve done some good ones over the years. Some home experiments can be worked around what your child is learning in school to reinforce what they have been taught.
Learn Science Outdoors
Learning outdoors is another fun way to teach your child about science. Encourage your child to explore and observe nature at the park or in the garden. You can do this by giving them a magnifying glass and some jars so that they can collect seeds, leaves and insects. They can then use the magnifying glass to look at them in more detail and learn more about them. Exploring nature in this way will teach your child to respect the environment and all living things.

Add Science to Play Activities
Include science learning in your child’s play activities at home. Building blocks and modelling clay are both ideal for teaching science to younger children. These activities encourage children to be creative and problem-solve, which are both important academic skills. You could also let your child have water, there are plenty of science related experiments you can do here from making a bubble mix, or slime or even a homemade lava lamp. For younger children, you could choose a few different objects and let them experiment to see which ones sink and which ones float.
Make a Hypothesis
Before you start any science activity or experiment with your child, ask them what they think will happen. This is called making a hypothesis. Having a hypothesis will keep your child actively engaged in the activity because they will be excited to find out the outcome.
By doing experiments at home regularly and making them fun you will be Helping Your Child Develop a Love of Science. As a bonus, most parents find it fun too.

Science can be fun. My youngest loves doing science experiments like these.

I love the idea of doing science outdoors! We get tinker crates from Kiwi Co, which is great for science.
