Easy Lahmacun Recipe

Lahmacun is a tasty, generally healthy pizza like dish that originated in the Middle East. This dish can be made using minced meat, most often beef or lamb. Having previously shared a lamb lahmacun recipe I thought I would also give you all an alternative using beef. But this time, I have made it easier and faster to make. That way you don’t need to wait as long before your are enjoying this tasty recipe.

This recipe uses some ready made products making it much faster and easier to make than if they were from scratch.

Makes approx 10 depending on how much mixture you use on each one.

Ingredients

Topping

400g beef mince – I used the 5% fat one

1 heaped tbsp Roasted red pepper paste ( I bought one that contained roasted red peppers, tomato paste, roasted peeled eggplant, and carrots to add additional depth of flavour )

3 – 4 medium garlic cloves crushed ( I used a curved garlic press )

1 medium white onions minced (I popped mine into my Haier chopper which had it ready in seconds)

1/2 – 1 tsp paprika

1tsp ( slightly heaped ) finely ground sea salt

3/4 tsp freshly ground pepper. I use rainbow pepper.

1 – 1.5 tsp Chili oil

1 tsp Chili flakes

If cooking in a pan – avocado oil

Base

Small tortilla wraps ( these cut the carb and calorie content and cooking time compared to using fresh raw pizza dough, or ready made nans )

Mine had a diameter of 16 cm. You can use larger ones if you prefer.

Method

Place all of the prepared topping ingredients into a bowl and mix well.

Beef Lahmacun

Place some of the mix onto each wrap and spread to the edges as the meat shrinks as it cooks and moves inwards away from the edges. You only need a thin layer.

Heat a pan, brush a little avocado oil onto it. Add in the lahmacun meat side down. Then cook for about 1.5 – 2 minutes at a medium heat until the meat browns a little. Make sure you press it down a little with a spatula. Then flip it over so it’s tortilla side down on the pan.

Cook the other side for a further 1.5 to 2 minutes plus until the bottom colours a little and soaks up any juices from when the top was cooking. You might need to flip it a few times to make sure that it is cooked and browned enough on each side.

Chefs Tips

Serve with a wedge of lemon for a quick easy snack.

These can also be served with salad. This can be popped on top and the lahmacun folded over.

Pop some fresh tomato, onions and parsley or coriander on top and eat as a pizza or with a knife and fork. (That’s how I eat pizzas – posh I know!)

You can use different bases such as pizza dough, nan bread etc to get a different variation.

Ingredients can be added to taste. Want to check what it tastes like so you know if you need to add anything? Once all of the ingredients have been combined, you can fry up a small amount of the mix to check the flavour.

Ingredients can be adjusted to suit personal taste. Add more of an item, less, remove completely, add additional spices or ingredients it’s up to you. Get creative. You can make a large range of variations.

You can use larger tortillas if you prefer. The larger they are the more salad you can fit in them should you wish.

Boost the nutritional content by using a mix of fresh toppings including fresh sweet red peppers, chopped tomatoes, avocado and more.

This can be cooked in a pan on a stove as I did or in an oven.

Is Lahmacun a Pizza?

The normal set up of pizza is focused primarily around key toppings including cheese. Lahmacun do not not have cheese as part of the topping so they are not classified as a pizza. The name literally translated means meat with dough.

Are Lahmacun Healthy?

Lahmacun can be perfect for a healthy meal when lean mince is used. You can use lamb, beef, even pork mince. Aim for ones that have a low fat content.

They’re a good source of protein.

They also contain a range of vitamins and minerals including vitamins A, C, magnesium, and more depending on what you use in the meat mix and as a fresh topping once cooked.

If you use wholemeal or seeded tortillas it can boost the fibre content greatly.
