Looking for a delicious and easy recipe to make for family or guests? Then look no further. Many of us love apples and there are so many different apple options to choose from which is ideal for making a great range of apple filled or topped sweet treats. My apple and cinnamon puffs are delicious and very morish. The great thing is if you don’t always eat them all on the day they are made, you can store them in an airtight container and reheat them in an air fryer before serving. They will last 2-3 days in an air tight container. That is provided they are not all eaten within minutes of cooling down enough to enjoy.
Apple and Cinnamon Puffs
Makes 10-11
Ingredients
1 medium egg
icing sugar to dust
1 chilled pre rolled sheet of puff pastry (320g)
For the Apple Mix:
2 Gala apples – normal size not the kids ones
1/2 tsp cinnamon powder (can add more – if preferred)
2-3tsp soft brown sugar
40g butter
1 tsp plain flour
Method
Prepare the apple mix first. Peel, core and cut the apples into small pieces.
Place the butter into a pan and gently heat. Add in the apples and cook for approximately 4 minutes on a low heat.
Add the sugar, flour and cinnamon and combine well. Cook for about a 1-2 minutes on a low heat and then set aside.
Remove the puff pastry from the fridge and remove from the packaging. Let it sit for 2-3 minutes before carefully opening it out taking care to avoid any cracking. Sometimes, I almost completely unroll it, leave it another minute or two before opening up the last part to avoid cracks in the last section.
Using a 4 inch fluted round cutter, cut out 6 circles from the pastry and set each round to the side on a floured surface. Roll out the left over pastry. Make sure that the pastry thickness is the same as with the other pastry discs and then make more discs until all or most of the puff pastry has been used.
Place as much filling onto one side of each round as you can allowing a space around the edge so that it can be sealed. Try not to over fill them as they won’t close. You’ll have an idea of how much you can use after you have done the first one. As you do each round, add a little egg wash around the edge on one side and seal. If you put to much it softens the pastry and slides about instead of sticking.
When the first batch is ready to be cooked, wipe a little egg wash over each of the parcels.
Cooking
Once 5 or 6 of the apple and cinnamon puffs are ready place in an air fryer and cook for 5 minutes at 190 degrees on the manual option. I have a Haier Series 5 Multi fryer which does a great job of cooking these tasty bites. Then, turn these and cook for a further 4-5 minutes. If ready set aside and add the next batch. If they are not ready cook for another 2 minutes by which time they should be done. Cooking times may vary between air fryers.
Whilst the first batch of apple and cinnamon puffs are cooking prepare the next batch.
Once all are finished and you are ready to serve, dust over a little icing sugar so that they look pretty.
Serving Suggestions
These are yummiest served warm. The puffs are great on their own but work well served with accompaniments too.
If there are any apple and cinnamon puffs left within the first 5 minutes of these coming out of the air fryer you can pop 1 or 2 in a plate and pour over a little cream or serve with some vanilla ice cream.
Health Benefits
Apples
As well as being tasty, apples are rich in antioxidants and fiber (pectin). The fiber can help to lower LDL (low-density lipoprotein – bad cholesterol). Pectin also acts like a prebiotic feeding beneficial gut bacteria. The antioxidant quercetin help to reduce any inflammation. Apples contain potassium which helps to regulate blood pressure. As they are low in sugars They have many more benefits and are great to eat on their own and in foods.
Cinnamon
This too has multiple health benefits including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The antioxidants help to reduce cell damage from free radicals and contribute to its antioxidant effects. Cinnamon may also help with improving insulin sensitivity and slowing down sugar absorption. I is also thought to lower bad cholesterol as well as help with digestive and brain health alongside many other positive benefits.

Chefs Tips
Different apples can be used if you prefer. Granny Smiths will give you a more tart flavour.
If you want a more tart flavour whilst still using Gala apples, simply add a little lemon juice to the mix.
Other fruits can be used instead of apples if you prefer.
Cinnamon is optional. Include or omit it. It all depends on your taste.
You can also add a little nutmeg to the recipe if you like it.
