The pandemic left the UK economy in shreds. Businesses closed down, and millions of Brits worked from home for months on end. Some were furloughed from their jobs, while others worked overtime to care for covid-19 patients. Lockdown had a huge impact on the way we work and how we make money. Remote working was the only option for many. We turned our spare bedrooms into home offices and garages into home gyms. The furlough scheme gave people a chance to isolate at home and re-evaluate their careers. It helped support around 11.5 million jobs in the pandemic. As furlough came to an end in September 2021 many worried about the future of their careers and finances. To supplement their wages people took on additional jobs. This enabled them to learn different skills in some cases. Here we look at How the Pandemic Has Affected the Way We Make Money?
How the Pandemic Has Affected the Way We Make Money
Trading
Forex trading took off in lockdown. People used forex trading to supplement their income and support themselves through lockdown. Some popular trading platforms saw almost a 50% increase in new forex accounts during the pandemic. You can make a secondary income from your couch. There are plenty of strategies online to help you master the art of trading. You don’t need a large pot of cash or expensive tools to get started either, the MT4 for mac allows easy access to trading for those looking to create their own means of making money.
Freelance writing
Some people started selling content to agencies, brands and online platforms. Freelance copywriting is a fantastic way to earn money from anywhere in the world. You just need an internet connection and a laptop. Freelancer writers can earn up to £1000 per article – depending on their skill and experience. You choose your clients and enjoy the flexibility of remote working.
Food delivery
The hospitality industry was crushed by the pandemic. Some establishments stayed closed for almost a year, thanks to lockdown. The food delivery industry became much more important in the pandemic. People needed groceries and takeaway meals to be delivered. There was a much higher demand for food delivery drivers.

Working from home
Working from home isn’t for everyone. Some will find it lonely and isolating, while others enjoy the peace and quiet. The pandemic encouraged employers to take a second look at remote working and change their working style. Most businesses offer a flexible approach to work these days. Employees can choose to work in the office or at home. Many can experience the benefits of both types of work and improve their work-life balance.
The pandemic kickstarted a change in the working world and altered the way we make money. I hope you enjoyed reading my post ‘How the Pandemic Has Affected the Way We Make Money’.

I haven’t taken on any additional work since the pandemic but I do find there’s been a bit of a shift in my freelance work a bit x
It really has changed a lot of things, and quite scary just how much has changed. Everyone you speak to has something to say about this and it is nice to slowly see businesses coming back to normalaity again
The way I make money hasn’t changed much since before the pandemic, but I’m thankful as I know many others won’t be in the same situation.
I’d love to learn how to trading, I need to do some reading up on it
It can make you a fair amount of money if you do your research and are careful.
Firstly I was made to work from home which I really didn’t enjoy as I was homeschooling two children too and it was probably the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I had a few breakdowns in all honesty! Then I was made redundant which was awful but actually turned out to be the best thing ever as now I have the perfect job for me, school hours and all the holidays off so I never would have got this job if it wasn’t for the awful time I had at the beginning of the pandemic. I feel sad for people who really struggled with keeping their employment.
Although this pandemic has had a large impact on people’s livelihoods there are some positives in re-evaluating what we can do differently to succeed, home working certainly cuts down on overheads
It really does work out for businesses and also staff where it is possible.
Luckily I managed to scrape through the pandemic with work and touching wood , was ok, but I know so many that really struggled through it
That’s good to hear. I think some have scarped through but so many have struggled with all the changes and businesses closing.
I found I started to comp to supplement my income
That is one way people can make money but also a very slow process.
really interesting yet sad blog post – weird to think how much the world has changed
It is different now and awful that people have been struggling so much.
the world has changed so much over the past 2 years. I honestly thought we would be at the end of it all now but I feel like it is all about to start again
Oh the pandemic has changed so many things that the world is changing. I don’t know if it is positive or not but some things needed a new point of view.
In my opinion, as always, everything is about making a problem, an opportunity and from there maybe changing something, but always for the better!
That’s very true. We can turn a negative into a positive in many cases.
I’ve worked from home for over 12 years, but there are so many of my friends and family who are able to work from home now. They love it!
It is so much more convenient to work from home.
There has definitely been a shift, and these changes are here to stay.
It looks like they will for some people.
The pandemic has certainly allowed people to work from home more. I think that is a change that will last.
It’s a good change for some with benefits. I’ve worked form home for years and I much prefer it.
I never thought about it but that is so true!!! Working from home is not becoming the new norm and with it new jobs are getting created. Amazing…
An interesting read as so much has changed in the last 2 years due to the pandemic, while some have lost money, others have found a new way of making money
I’ve noticed some changes in this along with other things! I want to try to work on my photography more to do that on the side, otherwise I’ve been working the same amount I always do.
That sounds like it’ll be a fun way to earn extra money. I think it’s great if you can do that x
I think there are definitely pros to working at home. I think in the long term it will help businesses by allowing their employees to work from home which is easier for them and will have an overall positive impact on the business.
I started getting my groceries delivered during the pandemic and I absolutely love it. It’s great to order everything I need and not leave the house.
More people are able to work from home and they love it. It’s a great way to stay healthy and have more time.
True that it was tough for a lot of people and I hope the entire community and economy will recover real soon. Thanks alot for sharing and we need that to support each other
I can relate to this. I used to sell clothes online before. And then the pandemic came and I had to stop due to financial problems. Glad I can work online now. Thank you so much for sharing these ideas on how to make money during this pandemic.
It did affect people in different ways. I’m glad you found another way to work.
So many people have side businesses now. And since the pandemic, working at home is a complete and viable thing!
That’s very true. It’s amazing how much we can achieve too from home.
I would love to make some money freelancing. Seems like I’m running on fumes come Christmas due to all of the extra spending.
We as a family are much more careful with money than before the pandemic. I wish I knew how to trade too.
I think it was a shock to most and made us all rethink our spending.
Because of this pandemic many were allowed to work from home and I know many who lost their job because of it.
I love it! Working from home is the best also more and more businesses need to convert to online deliverables because people realized just how much better it was shopping and ordering stuff online was.
Gosh I wouldn’t know where to start with trading haha. I know my freelance work increased during lockdown which was a lucky position to be in
That is lucky. Loads lost their jobs and others had reduced work.
Oh yes, it’s been tough, that’s for sure! I try to sell stuff on eBay to earn extra cash.
That can be a great way to earn extra money.
Yes this pandemic has been a real life changer and the world of food deliveries is deffo a big money earner for some x
I started a small jewelry business during covid, and have been trying to grow it on Instagram.
Oh wow, that’s amazing. I hope it continues to grow.
I’ve been blogging for many years while working in a corporate firm, and with my experience, I am capable of managing my time and applying professionalism in both works.
You are right, working from home is not for everyone. It takes a lot of discipline and time management.
Pandemic really shook things quite a lot. People started doing copy-writing more: it’s harder to occasionally do it like I used to do before. Food delivery is now so common, but sadly it led to a huge increase in price here, that is something I personally don’t like. I think I should think about the stock market as well but I am lazy to start
There are many different options when it comes to earning extra money, you just need to find what works for you.
Im one of the people who turned into freelance services. The pandemic has definitely changed a lot but change is the only constant in the world. And we gotta adapt.
That’s very true, we will all need to adapt to the changing world.
Food delivery has definitely become more popular since the pandemic. Although, I haven’t tried yet
It has been a popular thing to do and easy too.
I work in a preschool, so I had to be active and teach during the pandemic (Japan didn’t really lock down because it was afraid people couldn’t find work or daycare). However, when I stayed home as I was more cautious about going out, I worked a lot on my blog. I make some money to help the bills out.
The pandemic has definitely had a big impact on income all over the country. I’ve been trading for years and definitely some more during the pandemic.
It is a great way to make money if you know what you are doing.
In most places it seems people have utilizing delivery services since it is more convenient, and most people, including me, aren’t comfortable going to the grocery store or other public places.
It has become very popular with delivery slots filling up fast.
I really wanted to try trading, a lot of my friends do that. Also some of them are now virtual assistants.
This is a great reference for those needing ideas for how to make money at home during these times. Thank you for sharing!
Things have changed so much since the pandemic started. I am actually stuck working in person and would love to be able to always work from home!
The pandemic has affected everything and will change the world forever.
It certainly will. Hopefully we can make positive changes.
All very great points! I myself got the option to work remotely during the pandemic and loved the peace and quiet, and especially the flexibility to do multiple tasks/errands at home on my work break. I also loved that my commute time reduced to 0% 😉
It was great for anyone with that option. The 0% commute must have been wonderful!
Everything slowed down or was put on hold. It’s been tough but things are kind of starting to pick up again.
They are which is great. Businesses are finding ways to work around it.
A very nice article giving an insight in working from home during the pendamic
Thanks Terence. I’m glad you liked it.
Yes true pandemic posed challenges for many but you just keep working and doing whatever you can to make money.
It was a nightmare for many. It’s good to see so many people found alternative ways to boost thier income.
