LED Lights the Planet-Friendly Future of Lighting

Many of us are becoming increasingly conscious of the amount of waste we create and energy we use. As a result, our buying habits have changed over the last few years. This has also sparked a growth in more environmentally friendly products. We are not always aware of areas where we can make changes within the home to help reduce energy waste as well as physical waste. Having had experience in home refurbishment and decoration one area I’ve noticed people often overlook is lighting.
Lighting in the home is extremely important. It’s not just for the obvious, providing light. Lighting in the home can also help create a mood whether it’s dim lighting or coloured. It is also important for home safety, think floodlights in the garden which are a great deterrent for would-be intruders.
Advantages of LED Lights
Using LED lights in the home has a number of advantages. Here are a few reasons why we should all consider using a range of LED lights in our homes.
Energy Efficiency
Did you know that LED lights can be up to 80% – 90% more efficient than fluorescent and incandescent lights? Simply put, with LED lights 80%-90% is converted into energy rather than heat as opposed to the opposite with fluorescent lights which convert 95% of energy to heat and 5% to light and incandescent lights which convert 90% to heat and 10% to light. As LED lights use less energy they not only save money but also result in fewer greenhouse gas emissions being produced through their use.
Life Span
LED lights have a life span of approximately 50,0oo hours. Combine that with the fact that they are extremely energy efficient and you have a bulb that can last for years without needing to be replaced. For homeowners and landlords that means fewer lights will required and labour costs will be lower as replacements are needed less often. If we all switched to LED lights the impact on the environment would be enormous resulting in less energy being required, fewer carbon emissions, and less landfill waste.
Environmentally Safe
Of course, a long life span is great but another big reason why LED lights are better for the environment is that they do not contain the toxic elements. Fluorescent lights contain mercury. This can be released into the environment as both dust and vapor if the light is broken.
Superior Light Distribution
LED lights give a far better light quality than other lights. Their light is also focused in one direction making sure that area is well lit. Other lights give off light in different directions meaning that they tend to light up well closer to the light source – ceiling but the light isn’t so bright further down – closer to the floor.
Large Range of Designs
The availability of different design styles has grown over the years when it comes to LED lights. Now you’ll find lights ranging from downlights (singles, which we have in every single room of our home), linear blade lights (2 or more in a row), track COB lights which I am finding are becoming more and more popular in homes and let’s not forget LED floodlights which my parents have found invaluable for use in the garden for lighting when required and security.
Summary
For those looking for lights that tick a wide range of boxes from environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, long-lasting, low waste, low cost, various design options etc. then LED lights are most likely what you need. Always used in our property refurbishments the proof is in the using. As a result, we have them in our own home – you can get a better endorsement than that!

I had no idea LED lights were so good! I usually avoid them because I thought they were just for making things brighter or coloured, I had no idea they were much better for the environment and the bank account! I want some new lights for my bedroom and living room so this is an option I will most likely go with
They would be an ideal choice for numerous reasons. You’ll be pleased you got them!
No, I havn’t got any LED lights in the house we live in right now, as it isn’t ours, so we aren’t invetsing in it. But they are great on so many levels and I’m sure we will in the future. Mich x
They are really good. I hope you get your own place soon so you can decorate your way x
We have actually just replaced the lighting in 3 rooms and lighting out in the attic as part of the renovations and we’ve gone for LED.
So much more cost effective and also not too expensive to buy.
I’m so pleased to hear that. It’s great that they are so cost effective.
I think we’re mainly going to have LED lights in our house. My Fiance is an electrician and they’re almost solely what he uses when doing jobs just because of how long they last really x
Glad he is aware and can fit them too. That makes it so much easier to have them installed in your home.
I don’t have LED lights in my home but it is something I have considered in the past and am definitely thinking about them now!
Glad to hear it Rebecca. You’ll be very happy when you get them they look great in the home.
We have recently changed all the lights in our house to LED based lights as they are energy saving and better for the environment as well
That’s great Ash. I bet they look good too!!
We’ve switched to LED lighting as they have so many benefits. Really like the fact that they are environmentally safe.
Me too, it’s good to know you can do your bit to help reduce waste and toxins in the environment.
I didn’t realise there were so many advantages to LED lights! I don’t have any in my home but definitely considering getting some.
They are definitely becoming more popular now. It’s a shame people are not always aware of the environmental benefits.
I don’t have any LED lights where I live at the moment, will definitely look into getting them soon
That’s a shame they haven’t put LED lights into the property. It’s something many landlords like to use due to them being low maintenance and low cost.
I have some led lights, in my kitchen and the bathroom.
I hope you will extend that to other rooms in time x
Love the herringbone flooring too!
That flooring is pretty fab!! We had that fitted especially. I’ve another post about that 🙂
We’re recently moved into a new old house, and slowly working our way around figuring out the correct eco friend bulbs to replace in each fitting, it’s surprising how many there are with different spot and wall lights and bathroom ones etc, especially in the older fittings, which have more obscure bulbs, but we nearly have them all conquered now, hurrah
Sounds like you’ve had quite a task. Glad it’s almost complete I’m sure it’ll look amazing!!!!
I love the fact that these lights do last long and they are planet friendly too xx
Same here it’s a great reason to have them in your home alongside all the others.
This look fab! And the added bonus of being eco-friendly too. Win-win!
The eco-friendly side is great as is the way they add to the appearance of a room.
We use LED lights in our bedroom and kitchen and they definitely last longer, but can sometimes be difficult to replace in the fittings we have. It’s important to be environmentally conscious though.
They last for ages don’t they. I have to say it’s a good thing as hubby can take ages to replace ours when they do go lol.
Such great information here, we recently renovated and used LED lighting. Can highly recommend it!
Good to hear you have also used LEDs in your home.
Yes, always do use them, they last so long and also great that they are eco friendly
That’s great. Good to see they are popular with so many.
It’s a shame people don’t realise the eco and financial gain of going LED. They really are great though. Anyway, really good post!
Thanks Aaron. I was hoping that this reaches as many as possible as many aren’t aware.
They have so many benefits! My hubby has been using them for years, as they last so long and more energy efficient! Great post.
Thanks Sarah. Same here we have them everywhere lol.
This is really interesting – we use LED lights in some of the rooms in our house to help with energy efficiency, so it’s interesting to find out more about the different advantages 🙂
There are more advantages than people realise.
My hubby is an electrician, we have LED spot lights all over our home. I much prefer them to normal lights, they last longer 🙂
I agree, they d last longer and look good too.
We have renovated our kitchen and lighting is something that we forgot in the madness of planning. I’ll have took into LED lighting
Oh no, hope you can get some LEDs in. Good luck.
We try to use LED lights as much as possible in our home. It’s a no brainer on so many levels!
I’m with you Tayla. So much better!
We have LED lights throughout the house now. They make such a difference
They really do. LEDs are a great option for lighting in the home.
We need to loads to our house and haven’t even though about lights yet. This is something to definitely consider.
I think you’ll be very pleased if you use LED lights in your home.
We have the LED lights in the kitchen and we love them
They are really good for every room in the home.
We have recently changed all rooms in the house to led – saving the planet is important!
I agree and the more of us that make an effort the better.
We have no LED lights in our house but they look really efficient
We have some LED lighting, it’s not that common yet though
It’s a shame more don’t have them.
We have LED lights in several of our rooms, we opted for lower lumens as they can be very bright, however the bulbs are a pain to change.
There is no doubt time is running out and we need to take some responsibility so it’s good to see a lot of people are helping by using these lights
I have to confess I didn’t know about the advantages of LED lights. We have some refurb to do on our flat over the next couple of years, so will definitely consider replacing our lights with LED.
Sounds like you have the perfect opportunity to get some in Jenni.
We have LED lights in the kitchen and bathroom, they’re great!
They sure are 🙂
We do already use LED lights but I had no idea how good they are. 50,000 hours is so much!
We do have some LED lights and as we move to being more environmentally greener we hope to have more
I love LED lights and have slowly changed them all over the house now. We also use Philips Hue so we can control the colours and brightness of every room which is fab!
We have been gradually replacing all the light bulbs in our house with LEDs, but maybe we should just change all of them right away and save money.
It’s not like it used to be these lights give good illumination these days and we need to have a conscience about what we are doing to our planet
I have only recently realised how good the LED lights are, I recently had a workman in and he was telling me about the benefits of using LED bulbs! I had no idea how planet friendly they were and from now on I will nothing other than led
Very nice.
I’ve always used LED lights. Love this post.
Thanks for visiting Yas x
Really interesting article. I am definitely going to switch to LED lights!
Havent yet but already plans for future improvements – they will save money as well as the long life span
I hope to have a green- or at least as eco friendly home as possible. Viewing one tomorrow!
I was just having a conversation with my partner about the benefits of LED lights in the home. I think they can really look great and the environmental benefits are a bonus
I am redecorating my new flat and these lights look perfect and suit me ethically as well. Thanks for the introduction 🙂
We do in the kitchen but they were already there when we moved in.
We dont have any yet but certainly worth a look when we upgrade!
Great choice to have, save money on the energy bill and more environmentally friendly.
These look fab
This is so important. We’ve made the switch too, would never look back
This is a gorgeous room – wish mine were less of a hoarders paradise, I have 2 lamps in the same place – think I should move one lol!!
I do have LED lights in my kitchen and I am pleased with them
I had never thought about LED lights before. I am glad I read your blog on this
I’m glad you did too. Thanks for visiting.
Sounds like there are quite a lot of advantages with LED lights. Interesting article!
We have LED lights, i find them brighter than the usual and they last as well
I need to upgrade the lighting in my new flat. Thanks for the ideas 🙂
No problem Natalie, glad to have helped x
The LED Lights in my Torch are very good,
I didn’t realise that you could put LED lights in most places
We changed all our lights to led lights and am so glad we did
They are far better aren’t they!
No, we don’t at the moment, but I’m, looking into it, currently.
