If you’re looking to bring a warm and welcoming ambience to your home it’s important to pay close attention to lighting. The lighting within a room can directly influence the atmosphere created. The right lighting in a small room can make it look far larger than it actually is.
Consider What you Want from your Interior Lighting?
Before you start redesigning your room, or shopping for new lighting accessories, you should draw up a lighting plan. This should cover all the essential lighting bases. Think about the following:
Your sources of natural light if any.
Is your general lighting good?
Did you want to add any mood lighting?
Do you need any task lighting?
The size, shape and scale of your room will influence where is best to place lighting in your room. You should also take into consideration the furniture, design features and even colours of your room when drawing up your plan.
There are several types of lighting which are helpful in different ways.
Types of lighting and How to Use Them
General Lighting
Your general lighting is the main source of artificial light in your room, providing a bright glow over an entire room. In many homes, the general lighting is a pendant light in the centre of a room. To make the most of your general lighting, and to prevent glare, consider dimmer switches. We love these and are a necessity in every home we refurbished. Dimmer switches are invaluable in allowing you to control the level of light in a room to suit the natural changes in daylight. You can also layer a cluster of pendant lights to make your general lighting as stylish as possible.
Ambient Lighting
These a breathe new life into your space, add depth to your space and complement your general lighting with ambient lighting. The clue is in the name when it comes to ambient lighting, it’s a perfect way to add ambience to a room. Use chandeliers to create a luxurious feel to your room. Recessed pot lights and track lights are also good examples of ambient lighting that provide complete illumination with added drama.
Accent Lighting
If there are any elements that you really want to highlight in your space, consider accent lighting. This type of lighting is used to illuminate specific design ‘accents’, such as display shelves, artwork or original period features. To emphasise these elements with a soft glow, choose LED accent lighting. Lanterns, fairy lights, and energy-efficient Edison bulbs are also ideal accent lights.
Task Lighting
Task lighting is similar to accent lighting in that it is used to highlight a specific area, but this is usually a workspace. Reading lights and desk lamps are perfect examples of task lighting. I am considering purchasing one to use alongside our piano to use in the evenings when the children are practising. For an attractive but functional task light, choose an on-trend anglepoise lamp. Whatever your style or design plan, it’s best to mix and match different types of lighting. This will bring depth, drama and flattering light into your space. Stick to sleek and stylish sockets and switches to blend harmoniously into your design scheme. Pay attention to the features and furniture in your space and choose lighting to bring out the best in your interiors.
Which lighting option do you prefer in your home?
