Keep On Top Of Kitchen Maintenance

As your kitchen is where you prepare your meals it’s essential to prioritise its maintenance.  Proper kitchen upkeep can reduce your risk of developing food-borne diseases and keep equipment functioning efficiently. It’s easy to keep on top of without much effort as long as you follow these simple tips to help you keep on top of kitchen maintenance.

Invest in the Right Cleaning Materials

Finding the perfect cleaning product to remove the dirt from your kitchen shelves or to leave sparkly surfaces shiny, streak-free and limescale free isn’t always easy. There are plenty of products available to buy from stores but not all work as well as others. In my experience, Mr Muscle Window Cleaner works far better than many other options. You can pick from a range of items including a growing range of products that are environmentally friendly. Alternatively, you can make your own using products in your own cupboards such as vinegar and baking soda. Keeping things clean can help reduce the risk of issues arising and causing illness or equipment issues due to the buildup of grease etc.

Keep Kitchen Equipment Clean

As a rule, when using an induction stove I’ll clean both before and after use. This keeps it looking lovely and means it isn’t as likely to end up with any built-up grime that is hard to remove. My oven isn’t used as often but I do try to clean this regularly. I do like it when it sparkles. It also means that I can see the food being cooked through the window (and avoid burning it). It helps to keep on top of cleaning items such as my mixer and food processor. The detachable parts used are always washed thoroughly after use and the other parts are given a good wipe-down with an antibacterial etc. to keep them clean and prevent bacteria growth.

It’s important to make sure the equipment in your kitchen is working properly and efficiently. Where there is an issue it may become something more serious. Well-kept appliances are more effective and reduce your energy costs. Damage repair is costlier than routinely inspecting the equipment. Therefore, you’ll find it helpful to check your appliances such as topping up dishwashers with salt and rinse aid, removing lint from tumble dryer filters etc.  And, if you need to repair or change some things, you can find replacement parts from this website.

Repair Any Leaks

In addition to being exceedingly inconvenient and irritating, a continuous dripping tap can waste large amounts of water, raising your water bill if you have a meter. Therefore, fixing your dripping tap should be dealt with quickly. Call a professional plumber if it appears to be something complicated. Sometimes it can be a simple fix that a member of the family can fix in minutes. Other times, you’ll need to call in a professional.

Avoid Condensation and Mould in Your Kitchen

Condensation is caused by wet warm air condensing on cold walls, common in kitchens, bathrooms and places that generate moisture. Condensation can result in the growth of mould, which is difficult to eradicate and hazardous to your health, especially if you already have respiratory conditions or a compromised immune system. Open windows to let fresh air into your kitchen. This reduces condensation and increases ventilation reducing the risk of mould growth. Doing this will also enhance the air quality in your home, so keep this in mind.

Keep your Kitchen Tile Grout Clean

Grouting can be a trap for grease and dirt. Dirty and discoloured grouting can make your kitchen appear outdated and dirty,  it isn’t pleasant. Fortunately, a little cleaning will significantly help with this. Your tile type should be considered when undergoing this project. For instance, porous natural stone tiles must be handled with more care because they are prone to staining. To do this, use brushes or less abrasive rags. Use warm water and white vinegar for a delicate approach. You can also scrub with a brush, or a soft, old toothbrush. Vinegar and baking soda can work wonders in removing stubborn stains and many of us already have them ready to use in our homes.

Unclog the Drains and Pipes in the Kitchen

Do you have a slow-draining kitchen sink? Does your kitchen have a terrible odour? These are signs of a blocked drain. You can prevent clogged pipes by scraping food scraps or coffee grounds into the garbage, compost, or trash before washing the dishes. You can also invest in a drain protector to capture any leftovers. Also, avoid running cooking oil through the sink to prevent a fatberg formation. As a tip, regularly pour a mix of baking powder and salt down the drain, then add some vinegar and wash down with hot water just until it’s cleared.

Keep Your Sink in Good Shape

Maintaining a spotless sink might be challenging even if you cook little. Hard water areas will often result in residue on sinks, shower doors etc. Washing after every meal is essential to prevent dishes and filth from accumulating in your sink. Use a sponge and a few drops of cleaning solution to scrub the sink after washing the dishes. Follow up by using some water and dry, clean cloth.  You also want to keep your sink from being soiled or damp overnight, as washing it the next day will be challenging.

Oh gosh, I need to clean the grout. It’s gross in some spots. Plus I need to unclog a drain. One side takes forever to drain and I keep putting it off but I shouldn’t do that!

    1. admin

Honestly, it doesn’t take too long depending on how bad the grout is. With drains, it can be so much easier if you clean them regularly. It requires much less effort x

Keeping the cleaning materials in stock also helps, like if you know about how long a bottle of something lasts you it wouldn’t be a terrible idea to enroll in something like Amazon’s item subscriptions and that way the products are just automatically sent to you periodically so you don’t even have to think about it. The downside is that if you forget and no longer use it or switch products you’ll have to make sure you unsubscribe!

A few pangs of guilt after reading your post. The kitchen is the most cleaned room in the house along with the bathroom but tile grout is a pain to keep spotlessly white.
Condensation can certainly be a pain, too, for those who use the hob a lot. I have recently invested in a low-wattage dehumidifier that I found on the Quiet Mark website and find it very useful in preventing mould around the windows.

  30. Claire MC

My oven is the one thing I struggle with in the kitchen – I think I need to do a more regular clean so it isn’t such a massive job when I finally get round to it.
