Collaborative post. Your child’s imagination is an important part of their overall development because it supports the progression of a range of lifelong, transferrable skills. When children play make believe and pretend to be someone else, like a mum or a policeman, they are able to practice problem solving and decision making. When they read books they expand upon their general knowledge and become better communicators. These are just a few examples of how your child can engage their creativity. I’ve collaborated with a private nursery in Surrey to bring you some tips on how to boost your child’s imagination.
How to Boost Your Child’s Imagination
Reduce Screen Time
Screen time doesn’t require a lot of brainpower. It’s a passive activity that doesn’t really inspire one’s imagination. With that said, it would be wise to try and reduce your child’s screen time and encourage them to explore arts and crafts, outdoor play, experiments, or board games instead.
Leave them to Their Own Devices
It’s not essential for you to continuously provide an adult-led activity for them to engage in. Kids need to learn to put their imaginations to the test when they’re bored to come up with ways to keep themselves entertained. With this in mind, don’t be afraid to leave your child to entertain themself. It will help them develop their creativity the more they do this.
Encourage Creative Writing
One great way to help boost your child’s imagination is to encourage them to write creatively. They could pretend to be a news reporter and write a roundup of the day’s events or re-write the ending of their favourite book if creating an entire story from scratch feels too ambitious.
Provide Props and Costumes
Make sure your child has plenty of toys and dress-up clothes so that they can role play and make believe. These props don’t have to be expensive. Empty cardboard boxes can become cars or pirate ships, and a towel can become a superhero cape.
Ask Open-Ended Questions
Encourage your child to use their imagination and think about things on a deeper level by asking them plenty of questions. Doing so will also show them that you value their opinion, which will help with their self-esteem.
Explore Nature
The great outdoors is a fantastic environment for encouraging exploration and imagination. Spending too much time in the same four walls of your living room provides little by way of inspiration, so mixing things up and spending time outdoors is great for your child’s creative brain.
Get Crafty
Arts and crafts are great for boosting imagination because they require your child to start with nothing but some tools and equipment and create something. It’s also something that a lot of children enjoy doing and is easily done.

It certainly is. You can have a fun time doing it too x
My mother encouraged me to read and write a lot as a child, and it became a habit that I carry with me into adulthood. I totally agree that less screen time gives kids time to explore non-tech based hobbies!
That’s great to hear. It can make a big difference when parents don’t just leave their kids to play on screens when they get home from school. They need more to develop their minds.
That’s good to learn about child imagination. Thanks for sharing with us.
I’m glad you liked the post Linda.

Thanks Gervin. It is something that parents will find helpful to work on with their children.
Creativity in children is so important. It is easy for kids to get stuck in their electronics or in front of a screen. Rather than video games and cartoons, show them something educational and interactive! Great share!
I agree completely. Educational past times far outweigh what they’d get from just playing computer all day.
There many ways indeed to challenge the child’ behavior and thoughts. Thanks for having these for me.
There certainly are. Challenging and inspiring is important.
Being a college student i began to learn how important imagination and creativity is, so this article is absolutely amazing
Thanks so much Joyce. I hope college goes well for you. It can be fun and hard work all at the same time.
I love this! For sure something we work on as well!

That must be really good fun and creates amazing lifelong memories.
Boosting your kid’s imagination is one of the great things parents and teachers can do. The kids will thank you for it.
It certainly is. It can help a child progress much further than where parents don’t try to do this.
I like the ask open-ended questions tip! It really makes them wonder about things and boosts their imagination.
It certainly does. It forces them to think before answering which is important.
This is indeed a great read. I will share this with my mommy friends as this will be a good guide for them. Might adapt this too when I become a parent.
That’s great Anosa, thanks so much. I hope they find the post helpful.
I love these tips! I always support creative minds in the classroom by following similar ideas! It is super important.
It really does make a big difference to a child and reflects in their school work.
Your child’s imagination is wide open when they’re young. When we honor that we give them permission to dream
Lots of really good ideas – my daughter loved doing creative writing!
I used to feel bad about leaving my kids to play by themselves being a stay at home mum but I realised that when I had to because I was cooking or doing some other chores, it was when their imagination began to shine. They made a teddy bear’s bed by putting two chairs together and a fort using cushions.
Imagination is so so important! When our children say “I’m bored” we get out the ‘I’m bored jar’ and whatever comes out they do. They’ve chosen all the ideas in there. From play doh to making a dance routine!
Lots of lovely tips,! I always need to remind myself not to provide activities always and doing their own thing is good for them
I think it definitely helps getting children off technology to improve their imagination
My favourite idea for imagination is crafting, my daughters favourite pass time is to craft and her imagination is alive when she is creating
One of the best ways of boosting a child’s imagination perhaps might be to ensure the adults, especially the mum, in the child’s life are stimulated and vibrant. Mums can get into an intellectual blind alley if spending all their time and effort caring for young ones. Mums need R&R and mental stimulation too.
My children have fantastic imaginations and I encourage it as much as I can .
