My son loves it when we snuggle up on the sofa or in bed to read. Even my daughters still enjoy getting involved in storytime and will often help out by reading a little too. It’s a shame that many parents opt for tv or ipads before bed. Reading with them is so much better for family bonding. Reading to children before bed not only bonds but also helps relax the mind. This makes it easier for children to fall asleep. On the flip side, tv’s and ipads before bed make falling asleep a much longer process as they stimulate the mind rather than relaxing it.
We were sent a great book called The Way Home For Wolf by Rachel Bright, illustrated by Jim Field. My son was super excited when it arrived as he loves books especially when they are about animals. He couldn’t wait to rip open the package and have a look.
Books like this are ideal as we’re an animal-loving nation and any book that attracts a child’s interest can be used as a fun teaching tool.
Once he had his little hands on the book, it was time to read it. His eldest sister was ready to help out.
It’s lovely to have time to snuggle and read a good book and children benefit from the actual closeness that this creates. It not only strengthens the bond between adult and child but also helps them feel secure in the family whether they are the eldest, middle or youngest child etc.
The Story
The Way Home For Wolf tells the story of little wolf cub Wilf who like many children, believes he can do everything and doesn’t want to accept any help from anyone. I have to admit, Wilf sounds a bit like my son!!! Many parents can relate to this as children want to be independent as they get older and want to do what their siblings or parents are doing.
Wilf and the pack have to move home when they find it has a new uninvited tenant. As they travel to find an alternative home Wilf gets lost in a terrible blizzard. Alone and lost he is scared but has to be brave to find his way to the others. As he journeys to find his way back to the wolf pack he makes some fabulous new friends and learns that it’s okay to accept help from others.
About The Book
The story is beautifully written with some great descriptive words and wonderful illustrations with some great characters and great facial expressions. We loved that it rhymed and that the story was not only engaging but also had something to teach children. Not only did we read the book but we also asked questions along the way making little man think about the story. The book was a great way to make little man delve deeper into the book and think about how the character felt when he was on his own and how he felt when others offered to help him on his way. Now he understands for himself that if he is struggling to do something in real life it’s okay to ask mummy, daddy or his sisters for help.
My son loved the story and has heard it numerous times before bed each night. Mummy uses different voices for the characters. This adds to the fun and makes The Way Home For Wolf first book the first he reaches for when mummy calls “everyone in bed it’s storytime!!!” He loves the range of characters and being introduced to new creatures as he’d never seen a narwhal before. Mummy loved that it helped to increase his vocabulary with the range of creative and descriptive words within the story.

I love the look of this book. My kids think wolves are scary, but to have one that isn’t would be a real bonus
The great thing is that the pictures in this book are really good. The animals look cute rather than scary.
This looks like a lovely story 🙂 I just think reading is so important for bonding and spending time with your children 🙂
I totally agree. Kids love storytime and it’s lovely to get to spend a little time before bed reading a book to them. It also relaxes them so they are more inclined to sleep.
We have this one too and Erin loves it. It has such a lovely story and message.
It is a great story and makes a great bedtime read.
How lovely that they’re both reading it together. The book looks great, and delivers quite an important message.
It really is a great book for children. Mine have all been enjoying hearing it.
My son loves wolves. This looks like a lovely book with great illustrations in it. I must look at getting this one.
It is a great children’s book. We loved the story and the message.
Ahhh what a cute book. The pictures really draw me in so I think my boys would both love it!
The pictures are great. We loved that the animals all looked cute.
My mom always read to me when I was young, and then when I finally learned how to read, I was totally obsessed. My love affair with words began with the books I read. Eventually I realized I could write. Perhaps not as brilliantly as the authors I followed, but I am able to write for my own sanity, at least.
Reading to children is always GOOD. It starts them off the right way.
Readingto children can be a great way to introduce them to books.
I have to say that some of my best memories of my parents were when they would read to me – it really stays with you long after childhood. Great post!
It can be a lovely way to enhance your bond. Mine love reading time.
You are so much on point.. Nice story book. As a child my mother use to read me and my siblings story books, we had all the lantern books in our house, Aside from the bonding opportunity, reading it to us also help us to learn how to read faster than out mates. Few days ago by brothers wife visited with her kids and his boy usually brings his bible story book for me to read to him makes me happy knowing that his dad makes out time to do so for him.. I must say, your kids are so cute and adorable, love the fact the the big sister has time for her baby brother. may the bond they share never die.
It’s great to hear your nephew enjoys storytime too. It can really help with the reading process. Thanks so much, these guys are really close which I love.
What an adorable book. My grandkids would definitely enjoy reading this as they have become very interested in wolves lately. Thanks for sharing!
That’s such a coincidence and great to har. This will surely become one of their favourites very quickly.
I am just waiting for the time my boy will actually allow me to read him a book since anytime I try to read it’s either torn or tossed out, I guess I will wait for him to grow a little bit.
That’s a shame, it is never too early. Get a routine going and I’m sure it will help.
Reading to kids is definitely a great bonding activity. It also builds the habit of reading which would be a good thing for them to have when they are grown. The story of The Boy Who Cried Wolf is a classic. I like this picture book because the wolves are not scary looking.
It is very important to get children into books even if they can’t read as it helps for later on.
This sounds like a great book. I loved reading to my children, I read to them daily when they were younger. I plan on reading to my grandchildren when my now-grown children start having kids of their own.
I try as much as possible to have reading time. It helps settle them before bed.
I always try to have story time in my classroom at the end of the day to have kids experience story-telling and explore their imagination.
That’s so lovely. It’s a shame not all children get this close time with their parents or siblings.
My son absolutely loves books and would prefer to receive a book over a toy. Having a story at bedtime is a huge part of his routine and he loves it
It can really help to settle children before bed.
It’s so important to keep kids actively reading and to help them develop a love for books.
I totally agree. I’m glad I can get the kids to read to each other too as that works well. 🙂
I have been looking for a some new books for my kidsm and this one sounds intereting. I’ll.have to add this on ny kids reading list.
It’s a lovely storybook for children. It’s still one my son enjoys hearing.
We always read a bedtime story to the boys when they were little, now they are 9 and 13 they prefer to read to themselves.
I always read with my grandchildren I find it so bonding, wow I love your blog always interesting & interactive thank you Melanie you certainly find amazing things to see & do
This looks like a beautiful book. The illustrations are gorgeous and my little girl loves animals, she loves wolves too! Xx
Looks an interesting book to read. My son loves cuddling up and reading a book 🙂
I read a lot of books to my daughter when she was younger and she loves reading now. Keep it up!
This looks like a lovely book. Our kids read at bedtime sometimes to each other snuggling up in one of their beds. We also think it an incredibly important part if their routine.
