What can we do to Improve Our Mental Health?

(Collaborative post) One of the things that we have all been thinking a lot about recently is mental health. But, What Can We Do To Improve Our Mental Health?

There are plenty of things that are suggested but you need to identify what works best for you as an individual. Your mental health is not comparable to someone else’s, so while the coping mechanisms might be the same for various people, you shouldn’t worry if something is working for someone else and not for you. Simply try something else. There are various ways to take better care of yourself and your mental health.

What can we do to Improve Our Mental Health?

Exercise

The first thing that we are going to look at is exercise. Now, we know that if you struggle with low moods that exercise might not be something that you want to engage in. Even if this is the case, it can help to give yourself that initial push. The reason for this is that exercise has a range of benefits, and you won’t believe us until you experience them for yourself. For example, when you exercise, your body releases endorphins which are natural mood enhancers. Therefore, you will feel better even if you didn’t exercise long.

Give Yourself A Break

It is highly recommended that you give yourself a break. Stretching yourself to breaking point is not going to help anyone. You have got plenty of things to do, but none of them are more important than your health. You must make sure that you have time for your mental health, and what better way than by creating a luxury spa experience in your own home. Allow yourself this time to relax and pamper so that you feel better by the time that you are finished.

Or, simply sit down and read a book that you enjoy. Watch an episode of that TV show that you like. There are so many things that you can do, and you might underestimate the power of something so simple. I’ve started taking time off work over the weekends. I may feel compelled to get a little work done but the break certainly is helping me feel that much better.

Keep In Touch with Friends

We are social creatures whether we think it or not. Meeting up with friends and family can have a big influence on how we feel. Just talking to people on the phone can have a significant impact on our mental health. To get out of the house and see them in person is even better. I have limited time so I multitask by combining exercise in the form of power walking with a friend. This way you find you get to catch up and also get exercise. In fact, I find I walk further when distracted which is great! Going out for drinks or meals can also be lovely. Who doesn’t want to get out for a change of scenery and food and drink that someone else has prepared!

Focus On The Positives

While it’s not the easiest thing to do, it can help to try to focus on the positives in your life. You have a place to live, food to eat, people who love you, etc. It doesn’t mean that your mental health struggles are irrelevant compared to others. Sometimes looking at the positives in our lives has a positive impact.

Use Affirmations

Some people find that using affirmations can be helpful. These are positive statements and can be used to combat negative thoughts. They’ve become more popular recently and you can even buy jars full of cards with positive statements.

The only thing I really need right now is a break from all these responsibilities that I have to do everyday. It is just plain exhausting. No me time, no alone time – unless of course I get up at 3 am when everyone in the house is still snoring away. Thanks for sharing these tips.

I love affirmations. I have also learned that I need something to look forward to, to keep my feeling happy. This week my son has an inset day at school so I will be taking him out to a museum. Little things like this really do help.

I agree that exercise and fresh air help so much, it can be tempting to stay in and not do much when you are feeling low. Even having a shower and putting on some nice clothes always makes me feel better. But alone time, to read, or just watch some TV is also something I like to do.

Great tips so important to focus on the positives. I do a gratitude practice every night before I go to bed and meditate and I find that really helps to improve my mental health.

During lockdown I totally underestimated the impact seeing friends had on my mental health. And although zoom was great it really did not make up for seeing them in person. We are making up for it now!
