I do love smoothies they not only taste great but are also a fabulous way of getting vitamins, minerals and fibre into the body in a better way than popping pills containing them as these also contain bulking agents. Drinking smoothies also means that your body is taking in the fibrous material from the food. Plants and seeds contain both soluble and insoluble fibres.
Soluble fibres are broken down within the body and can help stabalise blood sugar by slowing down its absorption it can also lower cholesterol by binding with it so it too cannot be absorbed by the body.
Insoluble fibre is not digested by the body. It soaks up water and passes through the body helping other foods pass thorough the digestive system more easily. This helps keep the bowels healthy by in effect exfoliating the inside of the bowel scraping off dead cells from the walls and pushing along any food that may have become stuck so in a sense it gives it a good clean.
Having fibre in your diet is very important as it assists the body to maintain a healthy bowel which in turn aids with elimination of toxins from the body. It is also said to help in the prevention of some cancers, heart disease and diabetes.
I made a gorgeous smoothie the other day that I simply had to share with you as it was really yummy and full of all sorts of nutritional goodness.
Very Berry Smoothie
Enough for 2.5 (long) glasses
40g red and green kale
100g raspberries
1 banana
75g blueberries
4 strawberries
Approx. 150-200ml water
Wash all the fruit and leaves except of course the banana (peel that!) then throw into a blender and blitz for a couple of minutes. Gradually add the water until it reaches the desired consistency which is dependent on your taste. Serve. Any smoothie left over should be added to an airtight container/ bottle/ jug and refrigerated. This will last in a fridge for 2-3 days depending on the freshness of the items used.

Enjoy!
I start every day with a green smoothie and I have done for about a year and I feel so much better for it. I have so much more energy.
It does make a great difference but then that is probably because without these smoothies we are lacking vitamins or minerals.
