This post will look at the main reasons why it is important to save. Hopefully, this will inspire you to make positive changes to your spending habits and reap the benefits of having savings. As well as adjusting spending habits you can look at various ways to make money easily to further improve your position.

The Importance of Saving Money

Create Financial Stability

Perhaps most important is the fact that saving can create financial stability. When you have money tucked away in a savings account, it means that you are not living paycheck to paycheck. Living paycheck to paycheck can create instability because a sudden unexpected cost could create a difficult situation. When people take out loans, this can then become a slippery slope and create further debt. You need to consider whether that £3000 holiday is really worth enjoying this summer or if you can hold off until you have the funds. Financial security gives you stability in your life and this is something that you cannot put a price on.

The Prospect of Living Debt Free

For those that put their financial health ahead of materialistic things the opportunity to become debt free can come far sooner. It’s something may strive for but don’t all achieve. Ensuring you keep on top of your spending and keep a tight budget with savings pots for various types of essentials, bills, etc then you will find that it will help you stay on top of finances, reduce existing debts and get closer to living debt free sooner rather than later. If you play your cards right, you’ll also have money set aside and also have investments that will ensure an income into your later years.

It Allows You to Buy Nice Things

Saving money also allows you to buy nice things. When you are able to put money away into a savings account and watch this grow over time, you can then afford to buy yourself and your children things that you might not have been able to afford otherwise. Additionally, you will not have the guilt of buying something that you know will put a strain on your finances. In addition to treats like a new handbag or a pair of shoes, saving money also allows you to gradually build your way up to major life purchases like a new car or a house. This means that saving money allows you to upgrade your lifestyle and improve your situation over the long term.

Helps Emotional & Mental Well-Being

An often overlooked benefit of saving is that it can provide emotional and mental well-being. Money is often people’s greatest worry in life. Many people lay awake at night tossing and turning thinking about bills (especially in the current climate). When you know that you have a savings pot that you can turn to if you lose your job or face a sudden unexpected cost, it can give you peace of mind and a sense of calm that you cannot put a price on. You should also find that putting money aside each month into a savings account gives you a sense of pride and satisfaction that can boost your mood.

As you can see, there are various good reasons to save money each month and it can allow you to improve your life in a handful of different ways. Hopefully, this post will encourage you to take positive steps to save more money and improve your financial (and emotional) well-being over time. Start off with a small amount. You should find great satisfaction in seeing your savings pot grow over time.

    1. admin

It can make life easier when you have set aside money.

  19. Lynndee

Yes, I had a conversation with my son about money. It’s important to teach them the importance of saving and how to spend it wisely.

  20. Melissa Cushing

It is so important to save and we amerce doing really good at it.. that is until, the last 2 years as you can see your savings slowly diminishing… I am workingman cutting back on food costs an energy costs for way to keep saving.

    1. admin

It’s hard to cut back on food costs with prices increasing at the moment.

  21. Renata Feyen

When we were younger we didn’t find it necessary, but we have taken up the habit now for when we need certain things so that we can buy them with no problem

    1. admin

That’s good to hear. If it becomes a habit to save it can be much easier x

  22. Marysa

I do feel that in a way, money can buy happiness when you aren’t stressed about money and paying bills. It isn’t always about being frivolous or having material items.

    1. admin

That’s true but then it can also bring other problems.

  23. Christy

I am working on paying off the debt that I racked up when I had COVID. I typically try to use Dave Ramsey’s plan when it comes to debt management.

    1. admin

It’s good to have a plan that works for you x

  24. Marysa

The phrase “money doesn’t buy you happiness” doesn’t always seem accurate, especially when having money (vs. having debt) means eliminating stress.

  25. Susan B

The benefits you list seem obvious but it is all too easy to put off savings for another day then come unstuck when there is a household or family emergency.

Children should absolutely be taught the habit of saving a little from their pocket money in the hope that the habit remains with them in adulthood.

Instead of closing so many bank branches, I would like to have seen debt charities share the bank premises to help their customers manage their money well and, if necessary, formulate plans to clear debt.

  26. James Travis

Its really important to budget and try and prioritise things that you need and mean most to you. It also helps to shop around for the best possible deal, amazing what you can save doing that.

    1. admin

It sure is. You can save loads each year shopping around.

  27. Russ Drew

It’s such an important thing to teach your children. Too many people live way beyond their means and the stress that this must cause is scary to think about. That said I appreciate that there are many people who just do not have the means to save each month.

    1. admin

It is true, many do overspend and it can be easy to do. It isn’t always easy to save but if you budget well you can reduce expenses and may be able to find something to set aside in case or emergencies.

  28. sharon martin

yes have always encouraged my kids to save, tell them save for what you want don’t get in debt for it.

  29. Kathryn connell

It’s so hard to save when you are living hand to mouth but I agree with the principles.
