There are many different ways we can make savings over the course of the year. The amount we can save varies depending on how much effort we put into our attempts on making savings and reducing spending. It also depends on how much we spend on non essential items and our ability to be strict on where money is being spent. Here we will look at how to Save Money and Reduce Spending to help you save up for whatever you need, whether it’s to put a substantial payment towards paying off debts, a lovely family holiday, birthday’s or, next Christmas.

Save Money and Reduce Spending
Cut Down on Non Essential Items
Some of us get into the habit of spending without paying attention to how much we are spending, or, what we are spending our money on. It’s nice to have treats. But, were we can’t afford to pay bills, or, we struggle to pay for something important it becomes a problem. Items such as a pack of crisps or chocolate bar with lunch are not the best for us, and the cost of these can build up if it’s every day or even a few times a week. Some fall into the habit of buying lunch daily which over time can be costly. Making and taking your own lunches can be far more cost effective and in some cases a lot healthier too.
Look at What You Spend Money on Monthly
The best way to identify where savings can be made or spending reduced is by looking at where money is being spent. Although many wish to avoid this, having a spreadsheet set up can really help. Here, you can add in what was spent and on what can help highlight areas that need to be addressed. If you do this for a few months you’ll see exactly where you need to make changes if there are any.
Buy Gifts Early for Various Occasions
Start Buying Gifts Early Whether it’s gifts for birthdays or Christmas, buying items earlier in the year rather than in the lead up to that time can help you save money. You will of course require adequate space for storage. It also helps to remember who you have bought for, what you have bought and where it is being stored. Look out for sales over the year from the January sales, Summer Sales, Black Friday, Cyber Monday etc. You can buy a varied range of non perishable items in advance. Food and drinks are best purchased closer to the time they are needed. But, when they can be bought will depend on the lifespan of the product.
Buy Second Hand
There is nothing wrong with second hand products whether they are items for the home or clothing. For this reason, sites like Vinted have proven very popular. You’ll find lots of different items available that are second hand. It is important to check the sellers feedback before purchasing to reduce the risk of issues. Charity shops are also inundated with second hand as well as new product donations and make a great place to shop to buy items that are generally a considerable amount cheaper than stores. Another popular option is car boot sales. These see floods of people attending to sell or buy each year. You can find all sorts of great bargains whether you are looking for clothing, homeware, gifts etc.

Reducing Waste
This can encompass a range of areas from wasted food, electricity, petrol etc. If for example you don’t need to use your car daily, then don’t! This will not only save you money, it will also help cut your mileage, and car wear and tear. It will mean you are walking instead of driving, cutting your carbon footprint and getting those extra steps in too.
Insulating our home well can also help cut bills. The better we do this, the less heating we need over winter when the heating costs go up to extortionate rates. Comparing prices between companies when your contact comes up for renewal can help keep costs down. By simply renewing with the same service provider, you’ll most often find that you are paying a lot more. It’s best o shop around. Check this with your other utility bills, as well as insurances, and your phone contract to ensure you are paying the lowest tariffs each year.
Cut the Cost of Meeting Up with Friends
When you go out for drinks or a meal the bill can come up to a considerable amount. An alternative is to take it in turns with friends to have a meet up at each others houses. Either the host can cater each time, or you could do a pot luck with food and drinks. It’ll cost a lot less than a meal out and can be equally enjoyable.
Setting Savings Goals
Sometimes having a goal to work towards can help keep you focused on reducing spending and trying to make savings where you can. Add in a little treat if you reach your goal is a great incentive to help facilitate this and sometimes speed up the process too.

I buy for birthdays and holidays year-round so I can take advantage of sales, and I pinch those pennies like a crab! LOL.
That’s great to hear. You can save so much by doing that!!!
I am the king of second hand. I built my entire computer with used parts off of Ebay. If you know where to look and what you’re looking for, you can get some great deals on just about anything you need.
Oh wow, that is quite amazing. Well done. That must have saved you so much.
Thanks for the tips! I love to make a deal with close family not to give Christmas gifts, as it is often junk no one needs. We just give each other homemade gifts.
That sounds like a good way around spending a small fortune. Some I know set spending limits to help cut the costs.
I get excited about saving money and do most of these tips. I need to start with some savings goals.
Setting goals is important and really helps.
It takes a lot of work to stay on top of budgeting and consistently keep money savings in mind. These are good points to keep in mind, and important strategies to put in place if you are going to save money.
It can take work, but on the other side can help us make big savings where we can identify areas we are spending excessively unnecessarily. Happy saving x
I need to watch what I spend. I admit, sometimes I spend more on food than I should so I am working on it. I do buy a lot of second hand items. I love thrift stores! You can find such awesome things there.
I think many of us are guilty of overspending on food. Thrift stores are great, you can find some lovely items.
Great tips here. Being mindful of purchases really helps with budgeting and saving without feeling like you’re missing out.
That is very true. You’d be amazed at how much you can save.
I am always extra vigilant about not buying unnecessary items. I found that it’s really not that difficult once you adjust your habits.
That’s very true. It’s amazing the savings we can make.
This is all such excellent advice! I need to be more careful about my spending habits; my goal is to save more money in 2025, with the goal of buying myself a home next year, at some point.
Oh wow, that is a great goal. I hope you are able to save enough to help you achieve this Michelle.
Buying second hand saves so much money I do it often. I agree with buying gifts early or even out of season! The sales are a good way to save money on gifts.
Sales can save you so much which can really help.
I do need to get my savings built back up and can be bad at times with needless spending…. thank you for these tips. I for sure overspend on food too and will work on that one. I also want to spend time slipping coupons…. it all adds up!
Coupons can come in handy when you can get hold of them. Good luck with your saving!!
Looking at your finances and re-evaluating your spending is really important! I spend time going through my subscriptions in January.
It really is. I do know why some don’t do this. It can really help knowing where money can be saved.
Raising my hand, I am guilty of overspending a lot, but I have it in my head that I never want to run out of anything. I have cut back some, but I know I can cut back a little more.
Cutting back as much as you can will make a difference. Once you see what you are saving it will hopefully encourage you to save more.
One of our goals for this year is to take a better care of our finances…Your money saving tips are wonderful.
Thanks so much. I hope they help you make loads of savings.
These are all great suggestions. The point on buying gifts early really resonated with me. I try to do this as much as I can because prices get so elevated for the big occasions! And you’re right, having space to store these items and remembering what you’ve bought is really important!
Buying early can help you find bargains and also relieve the pressure of a massive spend when there are occasions you would gift.
I do most of these. I am into saving as much money as I can whenever and wherever I can. I must admit though that I also indulge sometimes especially at Christmas.
That’s so great to hear. That means you will be minimising waste and saving more.
Great tips! Keeping track of purchases and storage spots is a game changer for staying organized and sticking to a budget!!
They really do make a difference Lavanda.
I need to get my act together and start working on building up my savings. I think this has come at just the right time for me. Hopefully I can be strict with myself and reduce the amount wasted each week.
Good luck Tasha. I hope the suggestions here help!!!
You’ve inspired me. It’s the goal setting I need to work on. Savings goals are my new thing, so this will be great.
Good luck Tara. I hope you can find loads of areas that you can save!!!
I think these are great tips on cutting expense. These small changes really do add up over time. I especially love the idea of planning ahead for gifts to take advantage of sales and avoid last-minute overspending.
Planning ahead is very important and can really make a difference.
