10 Tips to Lower Your Car Insurance

(Collaborative post) Car insurance is one of the least enjoyable purchases anyone has to make. Unfortunately, it is a necessity that those with cars have to purchase. However, that doesn’t mean you should just go with the easiest option and just auto-renew your policy. There are many savings to be had if you’re savvy about your approach. Read on to discover my 10 tips to lower your car insurance.

10 Tips to Lower Your Car Insurance

Discounts

Let your record speak for you. If you’re a good driver this will influence the rate you are offered. Your car insurance quote will be based on your driving record and how likely you are to be involved in an accident. If you have a clean record, you may qualify for a discount.

Buy Online

Not only do you get the best rates when you buy car insurance online, but you also can get instant quotes from multiple insurance companies especially when using a broker like one sure insurance. Some insurers offer up to a 15% discount for online purchases. With some companies, you can get your policy in less than 15 minutes.

Shop Around

Don’t accept the quote you are given by the company you used the year before until you know it’s a good deal. Shop around to get the best quotes from multiple companies. You can sometimes play them off against each other to further reduce the cost.

Take a Defensive Driving Class

Consider taking a Drivers Domain defensive driving class. This could work in your favour. This is because some insurers give a discount for drivers who have taken a defensive driving course.

Keep Your Record Clean

Maintain a good driving record is important. The best way to do this is to be careful and watch out for dangerous drivers on the road. Every time you get into an accident, your insurance costs go up. So, by simply driving carefully, you reduce the risk of this occurring.

Buy Multiple Insurances from the Same Company

Some insurance companies offer family discounts. So if you buy more than one car insurance you will get a better deal. Even better, some will give you even bigger savings where you add in another insurance such as home insurance.

Do You Need To Drive It All the Time?

With the push to be more environmentally friendly, many are trying to reduce using their cars unnecessarily. This means their mileage will be lower. By lowering your yearly mileage you will find you can get a reduced rate on your car insurance. This will also mean your car will stay in better condition and as a result, the depreciation will be less.

Raise the Excess

Consider raising your deductible/excess. Most people have an excess of £300. This means that if you are in an accident, you will have to pay £300 to fix your car. Often you can lower your premium by raising this.

Review Your Policy

You might find that when it comes to renewal you don’t need the same coverage that you currently have. Review your policy and see if you can lower your premium.

Do You Have a GPS?

Purchasing a GPS can come in useful. If you purchase a GPS, your insurance company may lower your premium. This is because your chances of getting into an accident are lower as you’ll be taking more care when driving.

As you can see from reading my 10 tips to lower your car insurance post there are many things you can do to help reduce your car insurance.

Do you or your partner actively do things to try to keep your car insurance down?

These are all wonderful tips to helping reduce your car insurance costs. The biggest thing is to keep your driving record clean as tickets can hurt you big time. I recently got USAA through my Dad as he is a retired US Officer for the Navy and the prices are fabulous compared to what I was quoted from other insurance companies.

My car is only worth £500. But I only need it to take my kids to school and do a bit of shopping. So I always put down a higher voluntary payment. and if I do get in to an accident, will just buy a new car anyway,

    1. admin

The higher voluntary excess will save you a good amount too which helps.

I always shop around as you certainly get nothing for loyalty. I’ll be shopping for a new policy soon for my son.

That’s true but also a shame.
