How to Save To Buy a Home Quickly

(Collaborative) Owning your own home is a dream for most people. Knowing that you always have somewhere to live provides excellent peace of mind. And, the long-term investment in the housing market is almost always a sound one. While applying for a mortgage is expected, you may not necessarily want the stress of monthly payments. It is possible to save for a home and buy it outright, but it takes a lot of time and a lot of discipline. The easiest way to get onto the property ladder is to get a mortgage. Here we look at How to Save To Buy a Home Quickly aside from working as much as you are able.

How to Save To Buy a Home Quickly

Use a Separate Savings Account

Firstly, separate any money you need for living from funds to be used for purchasing your home. It is therefore advisable that you open another bank account with a high-interest rate. While money earned on the interest won’t be significant, it is exponential, and when saving, every penny counts. If you can tie it in to a longer amount of time you’ll get a higher rate.

Take Advantage of Prepay Services

Life is a habit of getting in the way of saving for something, but while saving for a home, you need the most cash possible. Tragic events like a funeral of elderly relatives can put a significant dent in savings. However, most independent funeral directors allow you to prepay for funeral arrangements with a small monthly fee. You should also consider insurance and pension costs just in case.

Set an Amount to be Saved Each Month

A practical method of saving money is to set a clear goal of how much you can realistically save over a long period. While it’s tempting to try and save every penny, this is not realistic as you still need to be comfortable. There is only so much you can miss out on before your mental health starts to waver so make sure you do allow some things to look forward to once in a while.

Don’t Take a Vacation for a While

While saving, you should allow yourself some creature comforts. Still, one of the most significant expenses you may have is holiday. In the United States, the average family spends between £1,000 and $5,000 on holiday. The average family of four will spend £4792 on a two week break. . This is a considerable expense, especially when trying to save. So it makes sense to forgo the vacation for a few years, and you will hit your target much quicker.

Sell Anything You Don’t Value or Use

A significant aspect of modern technology is that it is straightforward to sell stuff. For example, apps like Vinted and sites like eBay and Gumtree allow you to sell items like electronics and clothing, most of which the average person doesn’t use. So take a look around and plan to sell anything that you either don’t use, are unlikely to use, or don’t feel any attachment to.

Temporarily Downgrade Your Accommodation

One of the most significant expenses for most people is their rent, which applies to many. While saving, it might be necessary to downgrade your living situation until you reach your goal. For example, if you are single, you really don’t need a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment although it can be nicer to have the extra space. Try moving to a smaller site with a lower rent for a while. This should help you save a considerable amount each month. Don’t forget it’s a temporary situation. You will be grateful for doing it once you have a place of your own.

It can take grit to get on the property ladder: I worked two jobs for several years and many friends worked extra hours when available. It is really important to set a realistic amount to save each month and stick to it no matter what. It is also important to keep up to date on government schemes and initiatives to make sure you don’t miss out on anything that could help.

  26. Nicola Maycock

its been a tough couple of years financially, i became disabled, my partner had to give up his job to care for me and our kids, its been a real struggle, then with covid on top. theres some really helpful advice here, thank you so much x

  27. Margot Adams

Very informative tips here for selling your house. Definitely worth remembering !

  28. Carly Belsey

Great ideas but unfortunately we have never been able to save for a house, the deposit for a house is ridiculous where we live and with four children between us, we just can do it, even with three jobs for me and overtime for my partner. We are happy renting for the timebeing but would be nice one day.

    1. admin

I hope you get there. Sometimes it helps to look elsewhere just to get onto the property ladder.

  29. Laura

These are great tips thanks. We are doing a part exchange for a new build and we need just 5k more to put towards the deposit so I have been busy eBaying anything we no longer use

  30. Sally Collingwood

I moved and bought a new home three years ago and it is so stressful, I don’t know how I done it.

  31. Rebecca Walker

Great ideas, I’m looking to be purchasing a house with my partner by the end of the year, sick of renting!

  32. Susan Willshee

I think that a mistake many people make is thinking of saving for the future as a luxury rather than a necessity. If you set up a regular direct debit to a separate saving account and think of it as another ‘bill’ it takes away the temptation to think that you can’t afford to set any money aside this month.

    1. admin

That’s very true. Having a direct debit set up specifically can make a really big difference.

  33. Amanda Botterill

My son has been saving so hard for ten years and finally has just about enough to buy a share in a flat, i hope he manages to, he really deserves to

    1. admin

It is hard work and takes a lot of commitment. I hope he gets his own place soon.

  34. Emma Barron

It is possible to own your own home if you are really committed to doing so and making ultimate sacrifices.
