Buying a gift for a partner can be easy if you’ve been together a while, but, what if the relationship is fairly new? It can be much harder and more stressful to know what to give as a gift as you want to get it right. Yes, it is the thought that counts but you still want to show them that you care about them by getting a gift they’ll love. Whether it’s a birthday or Christmas gift you are buying you’ll want to present them with something they’ll love. Get it right and they’ll be over the moon, get it wrong and it could end up a little awkward with them insisting they like it when they really don’t.
So what should we avoid when buying a gift for a new partner?
Avoid Making Assumptions
Since it’s early days, you probably don’t want to get anything too soppy or sentimental. Avoid getting anything that’s completely devoid of sentiment. Think, what do you know about them so far. You’ll have spoken about hobbies already, what do they enjoy doing. Don’t assume they like something due to their age or gender. Not all middle-aged men love golf or car paraphernalia, just as, not all young women are obsessed with pink things, pugs and diamonds.
Overdoing Personalised Gifts
Personalised gifts are everywhere so try thinking outside of the box. Let’s say they’re really attached to their pet. Why not buy a gift that is different and features their pet. It’s a cute, fun and novel idea to show you care, take for instance these unique French Bulldog gifts. Don’t overdo it though. A deluge of French Bulldog-inspired everything will be a bit much after a while.
Over or Underspending
Nobody wants to be seen as cheap in the early days of a relationship. At the same time, however, you should certainly be wary of spending too much. After all, we all have budgets to stick to, things to save for, and if it’s a very new relationship there is no guarantee it will last another month. Your partner might be mortified to see that you’ve spent a week’s wages on their gift. On the other hand, there are many that will take advantage. Take spending slowly. Spend a reasonable amount on initial gifts but avoid spending far too much or too little.
Getting a Gift for Yourself Disguised as One for Them
Often when we have a common interest with our partners, it’s tempting to buy them something that you can both “enjoy together”. But, what if their enthusiasm for that activity isn’t equal to yours? It could come across as getting yourself a gift under the guise of buying something nice for them. You can still buy something you’ll enjoy together, let their preferences guide you in the choice rather than your own. Items like single malt scotch caramels which are super yummy and you can shop here, are an example of a gift I’d buy and then find I’ve eaten the lot before I’ve had a chance to gift them. Oops!
Figuring it out on Your Own
The pressure is on. You need a gift they like, you don’t have long and you’ve panicked yourself and don’t know what to get. Don’t settle for just anything. If you’ve known them for a little while you may by now have met their friends or even family. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It puts you in good stead with their friends and family when they see you want to gift them something that they’ll like. They’ll also be able to tell you what they have and what to avoid.

These are some great tips – I sometimes think no matter how long you have been with someone it can be hard to pick them out the right present. Or maybe I’m just not good at gift buying.
That can be the case depending on the person so don’t worry Sarah.
Some great tips! It is important not to assume and I do think its best to avoid a personalised gift when you don’t know them too well yet and they’re so overdone!
If you don’t know them well personalised gifts can be really hard to choose and it’s easy for them to be overdone.
Great post it is the one thing we all struggle with, although I still struggle now and we have been together 21 years he is so fussy to buy for
Oh no. That can make it so much harder!
These are good tips. I remember buying pressies for my now fiancé back in the beginning and it was tricky to make sure I didn’t go too overboard.
It can be hard but it is best to reign yourself in at the beginning.
There are some really great tips here and yes I agree about not getting too much personalised stuff xx
Thanks Melanie. It’s best not to overdo those types of gifts.
These are really helpful pieces of advice. It is difficult to gift a new partner and we don’t want to make a mistake especially if it is a “first gift.” I usually give a “gift of experience” which is a trip somewhere, or a staycation, a spa session, or a restaurant date.
Those can be lovely although so by experiences they’d enjoy more than the person the gift is for.
I agree, sometimes buying a gift for a partner can be difficult, these are great tips and something which I will take into consideration the next time I am looking for a gift
It sure can. We all want to get them something they’d love ultimately.
Me and my husband are very unromantic-we just ask each other and give each of a list ! Less surprise but far less disappointment
If it works for you then that’s great. At the start of a relationship, it can be tricky to do that.
Some great ideas here on how to choose the perfect gift for a new partner. I actually love personalised gifts so I always tend to look for some ideas that are a little unique but still personalised.
I think it is hard to pick the perfect gift at any stage, but especially at the beginning. I would always advise not to fo too big
Oooh great tips and ideas! It’s always hard when you don’t know someone very well and don’t know how much to spend. So many things to think about.
These are some really good tips and ones i think I would benefit from in the future! Thank you for sharing!
