The Psychology of Smell and its Role in Wellbeing

(gifted) In this post, I get to make use of my medical knowledge to bring you an interesting and useful read that may influence your decision when buying candles and diffusers.  We look at The Psychology of Smell and its Role in Wellbeing.

It may be Blue Monday but I’ve something that will cheer you all up, literally!

With us spending more time at home we are paying more attention to the look of our home and also other factors such as lighting, heating and the little extras such as ornaments candles and diffusers that help us add the finishing touches that make our house a home.

This post will introduce you to a new company discovery of mine, bhvna London.

About bhvna

The company was set up by a lady called Bina who had been looking online for a hobby to fill her time.  She was very much into fragrances at the time and her son suggested she develop her hobby into a business.  Having enjoyed playing around with waxes, fragrances and wicks she felt this would be something she would love to pursue further.  She went on course to help develop her knowledge further, looking at the psychology of smell and its role in wellbeing.  She also learnt how to make candles, about types of waxes, combining fragrances and more.

This has helped her to develop her product range which consists of good quality luxury scented candles and reed diffusers.

‘bhvna’ means love and feel good emotions. Bina’s hope, is that her unique fragrances will bring a lot of love, joy, happiness and feel good emotions with a little luxury to our world.

Candles

The hand poured luxury candles are made with a blend of essential and fragranced oils and eco friendly blended wax (combination of paraffin and vegetable wax) in order to provide a good fragrance throw so the scent circulates well in the air and around your home.

There are currently 6 opulent fragrances from woody fougere, oriental and floral accords, available as a candle in two sizes; full size 30cl or travel size 9cl, so you can take one on your travels with you or try before you buy a larger version.

Reed Diffusers

Who doesn’t love their home to smell great! Many of us that like to use candles in the home will also like to have a diffuser in our bathroom, living room, or kitchen to give a lovely inviting fragrance that both ourselves and guests can enjoy.  The beauty of bhvna diffusers is they use porex e-reeds that don’t need to be turned.  That’s lucky as I always forget.  Diffusers come in a 100ml bottle with 6 e-porex reeds which are guaranteed to provide non stop fragrance in your home for at least 12 weeks. You can choose from Kuro Orchid, Turkish Rose, Luxe Leather, Cedar Leaf, Oud Affair and Cherry Blossom.

Why should we all consider having these sorts of products in our homes?

Here’s the Science part!

The Psychology of Smell and its Role in Wellbeing

Fragrances are made up of volatile chemicals.  These are too small for the eye to see, but we can smell them. You may not know it but smells can influence your behaviour.  A smell is an odour which can be perceived as good or bad.  Whereas, a scent is a pleasant fragrance.

Research shows that different smells can influence our behaviour.  They can influence; mood, stress levels, memory, concentration and even our dreams. A bad smell can immediately trigger the fight or flight response whereas a good smell can have the opposite effect.

Aromas have been used for years medicinally by medical herbalists like myself and aromatherapists to treat a wide range of symptoms and research into their benefits is extensive. I should know I have read a considerable number of research papers over the years.

Volatile chemicals have been used to treat a range of psychological and physical disorders. Such conditions include pain, headaches, eczema, insomnia, stress induced anxiety, digestive problems, depression and more. They have almost immediate physiological influences on blood pressure and muscle tension for example.

As a result, such compounds are beneficial in the use of products such as candles and diffusers so when buying either think about the effect you’d like it to have.

My Favourites from the bhvna Range

2 specific candles stood out to me from the range available. Those were the:

Turkish Rose

I really do love the fragrance of rose and have used it when making skin products in the past.  When diffused, rose oil can exert a positive effect on the mind and is ideal for those with depression (great to use if you suffer from SAD) stress or anxiety.  It helps calm the mind, boosts the mood and makes an ideal choice to have in your own home or give as a gift.

Cedar Leaf

Another great fragrance and one that can also be used to calm the mind as well as the body. The scent can also improve concentration, reduce hyperactivity, stress and tension.  Another bonus of this oil is that it can help promote feelings of tranquillity.  It is often advised for those with insomnia to help encourage sleep due to its sedative properties.

What Did I Think?

The packaging is well presented. It is simple and doesn’t assault the senses with excessive text or images.  The candle itself is nicely fragranced and as it burns the fragrance fills the room. It looks the part of a luxury gift and smells amazing too.  These are definitely a fab find and one I’m sure you would enjoy.

I hope you enjoyed my post, The Psychology of Smell and its Role in Wellbeing.

The Cedar Leaf candle sounds absolutely beautiful! I love woody scents.

I never really gave it much thought, but I can definitely see why scents make a difference to your mood, and thus your wellbeing. Who doesn’t love the smell of home cooked meals, or freshly baked bread or cookies? Or the smell of a clean house, or fresh bedding? Or even the smell of gorgeous bubble bath as you soak in the warmth? Makes such a huge difference xox
