How to Make Your House a Home

(collaborative post) Each time we are locked down, many of us are forced to take a long hard look at the places we live. This prompted us to either look to move or make improvements to our homes. We’re not all in the market for a new home so making changes within our homes to make it better fit our lifestyles is a popular option. For most of us, having a home that reflects our personality is essential for comfortable living. More so, with the current social distancing and lockdown restrictions, adding character to your home and personalisation is essential to creating a homely vibe for you and your family. How to Make Your House a Home

Picture Memories

The most straightforward approach to personalise a home and make it feel like your own is to display treasured memories. Your pictures are not meant to stay in the cloud, closets, or on your computer hard drives. Embellish your home walls with photographs of your family, friends or an experience of a lifetime. You could even consider pieces of art or prints within your home to give it a more unique look.

Flooring is Important

Improving the look of your home can be as simple or complex as you wish and can afford. The flooring within your home affects the look and feel.  Therefore, it’s important to have the right flooring type. My personal preference is always solid wood flooring it really can breathe life into a room. For a more affordable option, some will consider engineered wood flooring such as natural oak, lacquered, brushed, and oiled wood flooring.

Increase Your Storage

During home renovation, much emphasis is placed on appeal, while storage is treated as an after-thought. Speaking from experience you can never have enough storage space. you’d be amazed how quickly it fills up. Consider investing in aesthetic storage to add an extra touch to your home setting. For instance, open bookcases, handcrafted baskets, or wooden consoles can significantly enhance your home feel. This is an excellent opportunity to display your exceptional and personalized pieces.

Light Up the House

Lighting plays an essential role in transforming a house into a home. It is important to consider adding the right styled lighting to change your home’s look and feel. Installing a warm light can make a room feel more inviting that n exceptionally bright light. I quite like dimmer switches so you can adjust the lightin for your requirements and mood. Light can be used to creat a more sophisticated or modern look.  Itis important that you select ones that fit with teh style of the home so they fit in well.

A Cosy Corner

Your house may never feel like home if you don’t have your own little corner. This will be a space reserved for just you to contain your entire treasures like your favourite books, diary, and most comfortable seat. Additionally, you can advance your corner with a reading lamp to ensure you can savour your space at any time of the day or evening. This could be your haven after a hard day’s work.

It can be nice to freshen a place up and make a few changes to make it look a little different.

We’ve been house hunting since October and it’s been a very negative experience so far, especially with the topic of flooring. I love wood floors because I think this makes a house a home, but every house we look at used laminate – which doesn’t scream pleasant to me, lol.

It’s not always easy. We are very selective when choosing our properties. I agree, a home has to have at least some wooden floors.

Call me sentimental but wherever I am, just having my husband and kids there with me makes any house a home for me.

Flooring matters, absolutely. I like mine to be natural oak. It’s looks so great

Natural oak looks great. The walls need to be painted or wallpapered a suitable shade and texture to go well with it.

We’ve done all these except for the flooring. We’re still in the middle of having it updated. Can’t wait for it to finish.

This is something we neglected for years when we moved into our house, because we had our kids as soon as we moved in. We are slowly starting to do these things.

  13. Bolupe

I absolutely agree with you, the lockdown is making me look for what I would love to change around the house. If money was no object, I would like to have wooden floors run down the corridor.

    1. admin

It sounds like you’ve got something to save for. Luckily wooden floors aren’t that expensive in the scheme of things.

My house has hard wood on most of the rooms, except the tiled bathroom and kitchen. I’m actually going to be carpeting my room, as I’ve been going through and remodeling each of my rooms in the house.

    Great ideas! Thanks for sharing!
