How to Stop Worrying About Your Weight

If you feel self-conscious about your weight, it’s important to remember that you are not alone. 61% of adults have negative thoughts about the way they look, and it’s an increasing issue among people of all demographics. Many put on weight over lockdown and then found it hard to shift after. Being unhappy with your appearance can have a negative effect on your mental well-being. It can affect your self-esteem and result in anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts. Here we look at How to Stop Worrying About Your Weight.

Weight

Let’s begin with the obvious, this won’t happen overnight. If you are unhappy with your weight it can take time to get to a stage where you no longer have negative feelings about your appearance. Losing weight can help some feel better about themselves. It isn’t  essential but will, of course, improve your health and also your appearance. As you lose weight you can begin to feel better about yourself and this will result in you gaining back some of your self-esteem.

Accepting Being A Little Larger

Not everyone is small-framed, with a high metabolism and low body fat. We are all made differently and the sooner we start to accept this the better for us. You should remember that you shouldn’t have to change yourself for others. It should be something you do for yourself! A lot of what we see in glossy magazines has been adjusted often to unrealistic proportions. We are brainwashed to believe these are figures we should aspire to. We need to reset our thinking, not accept the airbrushed/photoshopped/heavily made-up individuals placed on pedestals and accept that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.

Make Sure You Are Comfortable in Your Clothes

When you struggle with your weight, it can be hard to find clothes you feel comfortable in. You might spend hours in front of the mirror each day, changing outfits over and over again until you land on something that doesn’t make you feel too self-conscious. Maybe what you need is a new style that accentuates your positives and masks the features you’re not so fond of. Layering items is a great way to achieve this, or wearing larger, looser clothing such as womens or mens oversized t-shirts. Experiment with different garments until you find the look that suits you.

Work On Your Health

Staying healthy is not about just about losing weight. It’s about getting more out of your body and feeling good. If you avoid thinking of exercise as a means to getting thin, and learn to love it for its own sake, you will feel more motivated to stay healthy. Find a form of activity you enjoy. This doesn’t have to be running or going to the gym if that doesn’t excite you. Feel free to seek out a more unusual sport like kickboxing, ballroom dancing, or rock climbing. It will take some time to become proficient, but when you do, you will come to appreciate your body for how much it can achieve.

Surround Yourself With Positivity

The people who love you don’t care about the way you look. They just want you to be happy and love you for who you are. But, if there are people in your life who make you feel bad, they are not worth being around. Your close friends and family should be a positive influence, and you should make an effort to surround yourself with this positivity. This will help you to realise that your happiness does not rest on being a low weight and your true friends accept you for you.

I’m honestly surprised the number is as low as 61%. I would think it’s more since so many people seem worried about it. I work on making sure I feel good, rather than the actual number. But there’s always room for improvement.

I LOVE this so much! It’s not about weight, it’s about being healthy. Those two things are not necessarily connected.

It is good to be able to focus on what is important, and not just a number. These are good points to remember!

That’s true. We need to stop allowing the media to make us feel self conscious especially as a lot of what we see is fake.

I have the opposite weight problem: I am skinny if I don’t put in effort I become thin and fragile and people start bully me for that. It was a long road accepting lack of curves and femininity in regular sense for me. Your advice from the post is exactly what I do all the time

Well, exercising on a daily will do the job of taking away the excess fat, for you. I’ve been at it since last year in October and we’ve lost 21 kilos in the process!

    1. admin

Wow, you’ve done an amazing job. I bet you feel much better for it.

  10. Clarice

This is an interesting insight but yes, I agree with you that we be realistic with our goals and it would help if we can accept being a little larger. We don’t have to be skinny like a model instead, we just have to be healthy. Thank you for reminding us to surround ourselves with positivity.

Being realistic can help shift the focus on watching every calorie we eat and pound we lose.

  11. Autumn Murray

I love this! I am totally focused on losing weight to the point it stresses me out. Thanks for the helpful tips.

It really shouldn’t become the main focus of our lives. It can literally drive us insane if it does. If you want to lose weight, accept it will be a gradual process and your happiness does not depend on it.

  12. Jennifer L Prince

Ug. This is something I’ve struggled with as I’ve gotten older. I’ve learned to accept a little fluff around the middle!

    1. admin

I think that’s great, many struggle to do that.

  13. Elise Ho

Accepting yourself does not have to do with losing weight. It is accepting where you are and loving yourself for what you are

    1. admin

We need to learn to accept ourselves for who we are not our size although some find weight loss helps them to do this.

  14. Chrissy

Thank you for these tips and advice! Badly need it as I have been obese all my life 🙁

    1. admin

You’d be amazed at how a few lifestyle changes can help.

  15. Christian Foremost

I totally agree with you. We are beautiful just the way we are. If we want to be healthier, we have to do it for ourselves and not ti live up to unrealistic standards of society.

If we don’t do it for ourselves our heart doesn’t tend to be in it meaning quite often we don’t achieve the results we want.

  16. Rhian Westbury

I’ve always been worried about my weight in some form. I do know that I need to lose at least some for health reasons but I am trying to accept that I’m never going to be small. I make sure to work out most days to at least try and stay fit, because being fit and healthy doesn’t always mean being small x

  17. Mellissa Williams

I have to say we women especially do worry about our weight. I think building your self-esteem does help. Also fitting it some regular exercise can make us feel good about ourselves whatever weight we are. I walk every day

  18. Natasha Mairs

I never used to worry about my weight until a started to put on weight as I got older. I do comfort eat which doesn’t help

    1. admin

It does happen as we age. It is also harder to lose once we put the weight on.

  19. Michelle

I am constantly worrying and thinking about my weight so I am definitely in that 61%. I try not to but find it so hard.

    1. admin

It really is hard to accept but with time you can adjust your thinking and get there.

  20. Karletta

I did enjoy your post very much AND it came past my desk on a day I tried “slipping” on a bathing suit that was slightly too small for me. Let’s say the “slipping” was more like “sticking” 🙂 You’ve shared some great thoughts. TY.

It is hard for us to accept ourselves for our various sizes but can improve our mental health when we do.
