Beauty Through the Decades

(Collaborative post) As with all trends, they change through the years, as technology improves and there are advances in research. This filters through to the general public and our knowledge of beauty products and procedures expands. Transform Hospital group have had a look at some of these trends Beauty Through the Decades over the past 50 years. It’s amazing how so much has changed. Even over the last 50 years people priorities and self care rituals have massively adapted and evolved. In stark contrast to 2020, our parents generation, as a whole tended not to put themselves first. This was especially the case with women. Many were taught that they must put their husbands and their children’s needs before their own.

 Modern Day

Women in 2020 are taught that it’s okay to put themselves first too. It’s okay to look after our needs and our mental health. Boy have things changed! The biggest focus is no longer on make-up. It is now more focused on skincare and how to improve the quality and appearance of our skin.

Skin rejuvenation techniques such as hydra facials, derma rollering and microneedling, have all seen a massive increase in popularity. You’ll find that many beauticians are now offering these. Techniques such as this wouldn’t have been available 50 years ago and if they were only a few would have tried it.

2010

Around 2010, the makeup trend was a full face foundation coverage with carved out brows and contouring and highlighting to the max. Eyeshadow was a big factor. Whether you wanted something more colourful or a deeper and smokier look, there were different options available for different preferences.

There was also a rise in dermal fillers. These would help to plump up the skin and lip fillers grew solidly in popularity.

2000

Here we saw many manufacturers using hyaluronic acid moisturisers. The style was to create a very feminine look overall. There was also a real shift to use more cruelty-free products and to being more conscientious about the products they used.

1990

A fresh faced look was more popular in the 1990s. A smudged eye look and a burgundy lip being the most popular. It also saw a rise in the use of anti ageing ingredients. The 1990s also saw a massive rise in the amount of people investing in nose surgery.

1980

The 1980s was the era of bright colours and bold styles and the make up trends really reflected this. They were exaggerated and over the top, prime Madonna era. It also saw the introduction of anti-ageing products with collagen being the wonder ingredient.

It is interesting to see how beauty has changed through the years and how often some trends will come around again. We have definitely come a long way in the past few decades as well.

  2. Amber Myers

These are some interesting trends. I rarely follow trends myself though. I tend to wear what I like and I rarely wear makeup!

I know what you mean. I tend not to apart from self care x

To think that anti aging products have only been around since the 80’s. I think before that my mom used baby oil.

I think it was and still is popular with many.

  4. Richelle Escat

I think that last year’s trend was the best. Good skin is not achievable if you don’t give it the proper care.

That’s very true. I agree with you totally x

It’s so interesting to see how skin care and makeup has changed throughout the years. The eye brows is what stands out the most to me. Everyone wants them thick and filled in now a days!

I’d like to see the 70s come back. We used a simple soap or Noxema. My skin never felt so clean or soft.

  7. Scarlett Brooklyn

I’m still in touched with the 2010 trend hehe. But I’m also embracing 2020’s self care trend.

This was lovely to read, I started to take make up seriously in the 80’s and when I look back on photos now you can tell the decade

I remember being a kid in the 80s and loving the bright coloured eye shadows and pink lipsticks. In the 90s I remember a lot of my friends pretty much plucking their brows pencil thin, it’s changed so much now.

  12. Rebecca Smith

As a 90’s kid, I have to say the Nineties beauty look has to be my particular favourite! It is just so simple!

  13. Talya

For me it’s all about looking after my skin. I wear very little make up and like the natural look. It’s really interesting to see the changes laid out over the decades.

  14. Catalina

I definitely prefer 2020. But to be sincere I am not aware of all skin rejuvenation techniques. I think I need to check them out and maybe try something!

Honestly, looking after what you eat, drink and put on your skin makes the most impact to how well it looks.

It’s amazing to know how the standards of beauty have evolved throughout the decades. Of course, that’s what dictated the trends during those years.

I would like the 80s makeup trends to come back as I love bright colors and bold styles. But I like the 2000s skin care routne.

  21. Cynthia Nicoletti

I grew up in the 80’s, this is when I wore makeup often. I do prefer 2020 because I do not wear much makeup and my skin looks amazing.

I remember my heather shimmer and coffee shimmer lipsticks in the 90’s with a really pale face. I look awful in photos haha.

  26. steph

I love that the beauty industry is focusing on looking after the skin and more natural looks to achieve that flawless look. I’m mid-thirties now and have really focused on looking after my face now. Got to at some point!

Me too, I hated the overly made up look and the amount of product that was needed. I never did those myself.
