(collaborative post) The Korean Beauty scene has exploded over the last few decades taking the world by storm. Today, people are using Korean Beauty Products as part of their daily skincare routines. Some even adopting the full daily 10-step routine.
One of the keys to the success of K-Beauty is down to the ingredients. Some have already been around for a while in the western world, whereas others are entirely new and offer something totally different.
This post explores the most common ingredients in these beauty products and why they’re so useful in skincare and beauty products.
Why are Korean Beauty Products So Popular?
Propolis
Propolis is a powerful natural compound that’s produced by bees. Bees use it to strengthen the beehive and it acts as an immunity defence system for the entire hive population. Honey is a popular ingredient in Korean Beauty. Unlike honey, propolis contains properties that are suitable for all skin types. The natural anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antiviral, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties make this a super ingredient for skincare. Propolis is primarily used to help brighten the complexion and fight acne. It can also increase your body’s natural production of collagen. The result? Younger, firmer and brighter looking skin.
Hyaluronic Acid
We’ve all heard of Hyaluronic acid but what is it? Hyaluronic acid is a hydration miracle ingredient. Rather than adding moisture to your skin, it helps your body to draw moisture up to the surface of your skin for improved hydration. As a result, hyaluronic acid has become extremely popular for those with wrinkles, dry skin and eczema-prone skin.
The word “acid” tends to scare people away, but it shouldn’t. Not all acids are created equal, and hyaluronic acid is an essential ingredient in any skincare routine. This is a powerful humectant that naturally fights off our ageing body’s tendency to produce less moisture for our skin. It’s an essential ingredient in products for ageing skin.
Ginseng
Many of us drink ginseng tea. In South Korea, they also like to use it in beauty products. Why? Ginseng is a powerful root that, when extracted, can improve blood circulation which helps assist your body to produce collagen naturally. This results in firm skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines. Ginseng also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These protect the skin from environmental aggressors and gives a lovely healthy glow.
Centella Asiatica Extract
Also known as gotu kola, this leaf has a very long and fascinating history in natural medicine. Legend has it that tigers would roll around in centella asiatica to heal their wounds after fighting. Traditionally, it has been used to help with small wounds, burns and scratches. It has become increasingly popular as an anti-inflammatory agent for eczema.
Recently, scientists have taken an interest in gotu kola, and research has been impressive. Several benefits have been discovered so far, including those mentioned above, but this plant is also useful for promoting fibroblast (cells which synthesize collagen) proliferation and increasing the synthesis of collagen. It also strengthens newly formed skin.
Arbutin
Arbutin has become a popular ingredient in Korean Beauty products for its ability to suppress the enzymes of melanin-producing cells. This effectively reduces pigmentation of the skin, fading dark patches or sunspots. Arbutin is naturally derived and found in dried leaves of bearberry, blueberry and cranberry. Many dermatologists say it is the key to brighter looking skin. It also helps protect your skin from the sun, is gentle to the skin and is much safer than hydroquinone (the synthetic ingredient known to brighten the complexion).

I have a few Korean beauty products that are cruelty free and they are great. I like how K-beauty has an emphasis on powerful ingredients. Gingseng sounds great.
