When my husband and I first bought our property many years ago (I won’t say how many as I’ll be giving away my age) the house we bought was in need of major renovation works. This involved stripping back the property to brick work and timber joists and a total refit with new materials.
As you can imagine it was an enormous job for us and one of the most important things we had to take into consideration was the insulation. Anyone that knows anything about property refurbishment will know that this is one of the major considerations that will affect the energy efficiency of a property. Modern standards require all renovations and new builds to be well insulated to prevent heat loss.
Most homes have cavity walls and when you fill this with insulation you can reduce the amount of heat lost which could be up to 35%. Some homes have solid walls rather than cavity walls which require a different form of insulation so your home will need to be surveyed first to identify the type of insulation that your property will require.
Loft insulation is also important with 25% of the energy used to heat the building being lost through the roof – shocking isn’t it.

It’s not just about keeping heat in though. Insulating property in this way can also help keep the home cool in the Summer so you won’t need to think of drastic ways to cool down.
Interestingly the Energy Saving Trust in 2016 calculated that a properly insulated home can make a yearly saving of between £240 and £275 off their energy bill. That’s a pretty good incentive to make sure you get it done properly considering the amount that can be saved over the years. Even better to know is that homeowners on a wide range of state benefits (including child tax credit, job seekers allowance, income support or universal credit working tax credit) are entitled to free home insulation installed through the UK Government’s Affordable Warmth Obligation. There are also a number of grants and funding schemes that are available to help with the costs of having energy saving improvements installed in your home. It is great they are trying to help people get warmer houses, it is crazy how much it can cost to keep a home warm when winter hits.
I know they seem to lose heat from everywhere in the winter.

Insulating is so important! I live in a log cabin with pretty much no insulation and it’s freezing during the winter and so warm during the summer. Such is the mountain life struggle I guess haha but that sounds like a great offer!

That’s cool that they are giving away the insulation. Being in a house with an add-on that doesn’t have much in the way of insulation, I definitely understand how essential it is. It makes the room hotter in the summer and colder in the winter when it does not have proper insulation.

I’m glad when we moved into our home it was already insoluted in the walls but Hubby did the attic himself. only thing is when we have hot summers we all sweat and moan its too hot lol

What wonderful programs the U.K. offers to lower income families. New insulation can sure get expensive! A number of years ago, my husband and I built a new house. We used spray foam insulation and it’s one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. It’s saved us money every since!
