I recently wrote a post about my little man and his verbal development. I thought that it might be fun to follow this up with some more information for those with a 2 year old themselves and include a little update with new words that have been added to my little man’s vocabulary since the last post.
As I previously mentioned children develop at different speeds and we should not compare them to others for this reason although I understand it is hard and also frustrating when you hear others children are saying things which sound far more progressed than your own child.
My little man seems to be progressing well but then he does have two older sisters that he loves to try and emulate.
Children with siblings do tend to progress at a much faster rate and I should know having had two other children prior to Mr Squishy. At this age his mind is like a sponge and it is shocking how quickly he learns new words. As one might expect for the age group he has difficulties with certain sounds including ch, sh, th and also r but we can still generally understand him and with his adorable little voice and facial expressions it is super cute listening and communicating with him.
Squishy is now forming slightly longer sentences where he can and is becoming just as chatty as his sisters. I try to encourage conversation and read to my little man using books with simple words and as many pictures as possible. When children can visualise a word for example ‘cat’ they are more likely to find it interesting and learn the word and what it relates to. Now is the time to learn numbers, colours and shapes. Mr Squishy has been trying to learn his numbers with me. I use songs to help me teach him as it is much more fun and we use our fingers and props where available. My little man knows some of his numbers now although his pronunciation is hilarious.
Mr Squishy’s latest words include:
Water: was Buuubba last time I posted but his has now developed and has become wudder (almost there little man keep at it).
Two: Poo. I know it cracks me up each time I hear it.
Three: wee/ bee.
Pillow: tillow.
This way: he can say this very well.
Soup: Poop.
Oh mummy I love you: Oh mummy I laaaallluuuu.
Night night mummy.
Daddy watch me: Daddy whot me.
Phone: bone
Daddy phone ringing: Daddy bone ring ring
As you can see his speech is coming along. Mr Squishy is saying far more words correctly and is learning new ones daily. By the time this little chap is 3 he will know 200+ words and will want to go to big school with his sisters.

It sounds like Mr. Squishy’s verbal development is progressing very nicely, he has picked up quite a few new words since your last post. Some of his pronunciations are adorably funny and must cause you much delight. I’m looking forward to hearing the next update x
Great to hear that he is doing well . My son is hsving to go to speech therapy as he doesn’t talk much yet.
I sort of remember myself at that age. I can’t remember much, but i used to say funny words all of the time x

That’s amazing. My nephew is 1 and a half and he’s fairly good at copying words already! My sister is a stay at home mum though, so I think he gets lots of attention which is helping. They’re so cute at this age though.

This is such a good post. The best thing about blogging is you have an online diary to see the real progress as they get older. Didn’t know those with siblings tend to progress further x
It is lovely to look back on. I watched some YouTube videos that were for the blog recently that I took a while back and the girls were sooooo cute!

My niece is this age and it is so funny when she is talking in her own way. Some of the cutest moment and it’s how interested they are in everything!
They are adorable when they chat to themselves and to others.
My nephew is about the same age and his pronunciation is hilarious as well! x
It is great isn’t it to hear them say some of the words. I get Squishy to repeat them sometimes and sit and giggle 😉
Yay great to see some great movement with speech, my twins have severe delay with speech tho we are making progress not as fast as peers but we will get there x
It’s normal with twins as they tend to develop their own language. They should even out with others when they get to school x
My second little one doesn’t seem as advanced as my first. He thinks he is already fluent as he waffles away in his own language. He is only 1 though so plenty of time yet. x
You have loads of time if he is only 1 so I really wouldn’t worry 😉
I loved this stage, where they are starting to use words and learn more and more, but how they pronounce them is just so sweet and funny, and memories to look back on as well as you never forget x

It’s such a brilliant stage in their development when they start speaking and their vocabulary expands. My SD’s are in reception and have started reading and it’s so magnificent to see how far they’ve come from when they were 2 and just expanding their vocabulary. x
Oh this is fun. I still wonder how our child-on-way is going to deal with two different languages – father’s and mother’s as all the relatives will speaking to it in their own.
my kids are all adults but my nephew if nearly 4 when he was around two he had his own language lol

It always amazes me how children develop differently. My 2, 2 year old sisters who are 2 months apart (mom’s and stepmom’s) have such different speech. One of them can hold a conversation like an adult out and the other can barely form sentences. The latter says things like ‘tot’ = toast, oooul = school.
They are adorable and their little voices are super cute.

I have two girls and there is almost exactly two years between them. Everyone told me my second child’s speech would be slower as my eldest would speak for her but this didn’t happen. As you say, all kids are different.
We all seem to hear different things but from my experience the second is more progressed as they have a sibling to learn from.
I do love the way little ones try so hard to say new words they have learnt, but get it wrong in the cutest of ways. I remember feeling really sad once my girls lost their baby words. Have fun and super well done Little Man #DreamandSparkle x
Thanks Lisa. He has been trying to say even more words this week and forming longer sentences it’s lovey to listen to but also indicates he is growing up and I want him to stay like this as he is super adorable at this age.
Awww this is so cute. I adore the soup one but could also be a bit funny if he was to ask for this in a restaurant. And the mummy I love you, I used to love the fact that my girls could tell me they loved me made them first 2 years of bringing them up summed up in a few words. Well done little man

Peachy is 14 months old. So far she only sayd mama, dada, and uh-oh. But she does babble in what I believe to be her own language. She comes right up to us, makes eye contact, and talks like we’re supposed to understand. Maybe she is trying to say words but they’re not coming our right and we’re not getting it. #DreamandSparkle

In my family’s experience boys always tend to be a little slower with their talking and vocabulary? Then again judging by my other half it doesn’t improve that much when they get older 😉

Unfortunately I never got the opportunity to see my son as a two year old so I have no knowledge of what his speech development was like. You see he was adopted out when he was 7 days old but I have had contact with him over the last few years. He’s now 48 years old.

My daughter is the same age as your son and has only just started putting words together, she now copies everything we say. Milk is the funniest one, sounds like nop, bless her
I remember my daughter when she little and she used to talk to herself and her toys, it wasn’t actually if I could make out what she was saying though as it was all babble and this was at 1 and a half yrs old
My son had problems speaking and putting words together until he was 4/5..having brothers and sisters helps a lot..as the youngest will always try and copy his/hers elders..my son is now 7 and is perfect in everyway lol 😉
