(collaborative) Having a baby can be very exciting yet frightening all at the same time. In most cases, it cements a relationship and brings joy as you watch your baby reach different milestones. As much as you both may not be able to wait to start growing your family, there are topics to discuss before having a baby. It’s best to have talked about how you will both take care of your little one, finances, religion and anything else you feel needs covering. Not having these conversations can cause problems later on.
Topics to Discuss Before Having a Baby
Finances
Finances is an important topic for new parents to discuss. We will all have money issues at various stages of our lives. When we have a baby our responsibilities increase. Will child care services be required? you’ll need to consider taking out an insurance policy, baby products, and don’t forget an emergency fund. One parent may have to stay home and take care of the baby. Can one salary sustain the family?
You also need to decide on critical steps to take to protect the family in the future. Life insurance is something you will need to cover and something my husband and I both took out when we decided to have children. Another type of insurance you may want to consider is critical illness insurance. As much as you wouldn’t want to think about death or sickness, it is important to make sure the family is protected if the worst happens. If you own a business, you many even want to go the extra mile and get a Key Man insurance. If you aren’t sure what this is you’ll find a summary at mykeymaninsurance.com. It protects the business from any financial impacts where key people are lost through illness or death.
Personal Fears
Having a baby can be a scary thought for some. Although I wanted children I was terrified of the birth part, a common fear. Discuss your fears with your partner as it helps to have support from loved ones. There is no reason to worry about these things alone. Talking about things can help and sometimes reduce the impact of the fear. If you need professional help then seek it. Don’t allow it to eat you up inside as this can do far more damage than good.
Religion
It’s essential to agree on what role, if any, you want religion to play in your child’s life. If you are from different religious backgrounds, whose faith will you stick to as a family or will you follow both? Making the decision now will avoid future conflicts where each parent wants the child to follow their beliefs. Religious beliefs might crop up when you want to christen or decide when to circumcise the child.
Who Will Be the Primary Caregiver?
If you are both working, it’s essential to decide who should be the primary caregiver or consider child care services. Factor in the cost of hiring a caregiver before making the decision. Sometimes forfeiting one salary can be cheaper than hiring a nanny. Even when you hire help, the baby will still need a lot of attention once you both get home from work. How will you handle this? Most new parents opt for the mother to stay at home with the baby full time initially before choosing to opt for taking them to a daycare facility or leaving them with a nanny. Another option is to take care of the baby in shifts. Then both parents share the responsibility of looking after baby. It’s great as neither misses out on the early years of their development.
Summary
It’s important to talk to your partner about all manner of things. BT coined the phrase “it’s good to talk” and that is true about most things. It is where we fail to share information and discuss things that issues arise so keep talking!!!

That covers all the important conversations but there does need to be a commitment on both sides to follow up what is discussed.
That’s very true. It doesn’t work if both don’t do as discussed.
This is so important! Having a baby requires just as much if not more discussion than every other part of a relationship. You’re creating a life.

Yes! Our first was born when we were 19, so we didn’t discuss any of these and yup, there were issues! So it is a great idea to talk about these issues.
It can be hard when things haven’t been discussed. In these circumstances, it still helps to talk about these before the baby arrives.
Having children is definitely a huge issue that needs to be discussed in depth. Communication is key and there’s a lot to consider.

My husband and I came up with a strategy for my son, and he is in daycare now, so we have a pretty good routine going!
Honestly, that can work well if you are earning enough to cover it each individually. I know some that go to work just to get away from their children and their pay only just covers childcare costs.

These are all great conversations to have before having a baby, but I heard once, ‘if you wait until you have enough money for a baby, you’ll never have enough’. I personally think there are so many more important things to being a good parent than money, but money definitely helps in raising kids, lol.
That’s very true. And also how much is enough. It helps to be on the same page on the various things that will be required when it comes to raising children.
These are all good points to consider. It is also good to touch on family relationships, for example, which family members you will see on holidays like Christmas. I found this got a lot more complicated once we had our children.
I know what you mean. Once people start having children it can be more complicated.
