Why Are Carpets a Popular Flooring Choice?

#ad

We live in a time where we have numerous options for flooring from carpets, wood, stone, lino etc. Carpets still remain a very popular choice to be used within homes in many rooms from living rooms, hallways, stairs, landings and bedrooms.  With so many options available to us, why many are still opting to use carpets within their homes?

Options

The options of carpets available are highly extensive.  You can choose from a multitude of colours and textures to suit any room in your home.  They are used in many rooms and the type used will depend on our needs.  A high traffic area is more likely to have a more hardwearing carpet than one that has far less footfall.

Heat & Comfort

It’s a cold winter’s night, you slip your feet out of bed and are greeted by a cold wooden floor? Many people prefer to use carpets, especially in bedrooms as let’s face it, a soft warm carpet is a much better greeting.  As well as being warmer, carpets are far more comfortable to walk, sit and lie on.  Carpets are a great way to insulate your home and block draughts.  The fibres of the carpet trap air increasing making it ideal for insulating a home. Whether you use a cheap carpet or a more expensive one, combining it with underlay can drastically increase the level of insulation.

Sound

Even with adequate soundproofing, many floors can be far noisier than carpets. Sound seems to be much louder on wooden, stone and vinyl flooring than on a carpet.  This is because a carpet has the ability to absorb sound, unlike hard surfaces where sounds bounce back into a room.  It’s interesting to know that the type of carpet you use will affect how much sound it will absorb. Cut pile carpet is far more popular than loop carpet, the reasons for this are it feels so much softer to the touch and are more effective at absorbing sound.

Safety

My kids run around like crazy in the home.  Having seen them on carpeted and wooden flooring it’s obvious that they are far less likely to slip and fall on a carpet.  Hard surfaces tend to be slippery especially when wet.  The other benefit here is that if you do for whatever reason fall on a carpet it’s padded so you are less likely to do yourself an injury.  Always reassuring for those with children or the elderly.

Hygiene

There has been some dispute as to how hygienic carpets are in comparison to other floors. Those concerned with hygiene no matter what flooring they have will often ensure that anyone entering their home remove shoes as they enter. This minimizes the amount of dirt/germs brought in and spread around the home.  It’s important to clean your carpet regularly by vacuuming at least twice a week.  In areas of high traffic, you may find you need to vacuum more often.  In addition, having your carpet professionally cleaned once a year will give them a fresh look, smell and of course help remove stains, bacteria and allergens etc.

Cheaper and Easier to Maintain

If you have anything other than carpet in any room in the home you’ll be aware that that room needs more attention.  Let’s use the kitchen for example which is more often than not carpet free.  Everything shows up here from hair, crumbs, the piece of plastic from the cucumber that magically disappeared.  Rooms that don’t have carpet need to be cleaned more often as it seems to make all manner of dirt, dust etc show more.  Carpets will over time cost less to buy, clean and maintain than hard flooring surfaces.

Carpets and Air Quality

Would you believe it, Having carpets in your home can improve air quality.  Yes, it’s true!  But, how does it do this?

The Science part:

Airborne particles which would normally float back up into the air in rooms with hard surface flooring will become trapped in the fibres of carpeted rooms – hence the need to vacuum regularly.  Individuals with respiratory conditions will benefit from this allergen reducing quality.

Summary

So there you have it.  Carpets will remain a popular flooring choice for various reasons the most popular being comfort and heat.  Do you have carpet in your home and if not which room would you feel it would benefit you most?

I’ve never been a big fan of carpets but I have to admit that it’s far more comfortable to walk on than any other flooring. We’re in the process of buying a new house which has carpets in all bedrooms. We’re still deciding if we should remove it or not… Your post will help with our decision so thank you!

They are more comfortable and much more welcome than wooden floors in the winter.

I have to admit I went through a stage of wooden floors, but after a while we have carpeted some of our rooms with the bedroom firstly. I do still have wooden flooring in my lounge but am changing to carpet in there. With pets the other rooms are staying wooden fooring for cleaning purposes

I do love both but depending on the room. I agree with keeping pets away from carpets, they dirty much faster otherwise.

We’re planning on having carpet in our living room and bedrooms in our new house as I think it will be so soft and cosy under our feet x

That will work well. They’re the most popular rooms to have carpeted.

Through the years our tastes have changed with flooring, but that’s also partly down to haveing kids, I used to love laminate flooring and tiles etc, but with the exception of our kitchen and bathroom, I prefer a soft warm carpet, especially something that can be hoovered well.

We love carpets and use it in many of our rooms except the landing, bathroom and kitchen as it keeps the house warm and cosy for our family especially with the cold climate in the UK.

We have hard flooring downstairs, but carpets upstairs and I completely agree it is so much warmer and nicer underfoot, especially on cold and chilly days.

I am more of a wooden floor fan, but I love the stripey stair carpet. Might look into stripping our stairs back and getting something similar. Not sure I could cope with the noise of three kids running up and down them otherwise…

Stair carpets are very popular and great for reducing sound.

  9. Kara Guppy

I much prefer carpets, especially upstairs as I find that wooden and laminate can be too noisy

    1. admin

Wooden floors upstairs can be noising especially when not adequately soundproofed. Carpets are commonly used upstairs in many homes.

We have carpet in all rooms in our house apart from the kitchen and bathroom. I love having a soft cosy carpet under my toes and it seems to make the room feel so much warmer and welcoming I think. Plus there is so much variety when it comes to carpet so you can find something for any room or style too!

It can add to the heat. It’s great that there is so much variety.

They do look more homely. Rugs can also be a lovely option. Oak floors are gorgeous!!!
