Collaborative post. Moving can be stressful. Even the best planners will agree. Although it is a demanding process, there are several ways that can make it easier for you. In this post, Tips to Help You Move Home, we will look at how to get the process rolling and be sufficiently prepared to help moving day go as smoothly as possible.
Tips to Help You Move Home
Prepare for the Moving Process
Starting your moving preparations early is key. It’s important to find a reliable mover as soon as possible. Good movers tend to get booked up fast so it helps to book in advance. Be sure to budget for the entire process to avoid financial issues arising. Moving is an expensive affair. You will find it works in your favour especially if there is more than one car in the family to have one of the cars taken to your new home for you where it is a considerable distance away. You will find there are plenty of car shipping companies that can help with this.
Declutter
Getting rid of unwanted items before moving to your new house is a great idea. It may also reduce the number of moving vans needed or trips back and forth one van will need to take. This also saves time and space when unpacking in your new home alongside saving you time having to sort through and disposing of items after you move. The best way to do this is to get rid of items you haven’t used in over a year.
Use the Right Size and Quality Boxes
You’ll need a selection of different sized boxes and other packing materials. Make sure these are of good quality and strong enough to hold your belongings. How you pack items is important. Pack light items in bigger boxes and heavy items and books in small boxes. It is hard to move large boxes packed with heavy items. Don’t forget to place heavier items at the bottom and light items on top to avoid breakages.
Label All Your Boxes
It really helps to label your boxes. This allows you to avoid confusion when packing and unpacking them. Number the boxes and keep a list of items each box contains to keep track of your packed items. You should also add what room each box will be going into. It makes it easier for movers to add the right boxes into the right rooms and also means you can unpack items that are most important first.
Take Care When Packaging Fragile Items
When packing fragile items use plenty of scrunched-up paper below and above the items in the box. When packing dishes, put a large amount of packing around each dish. Pack these wrapped dishes in small bundles with more paper. Finally, place the dishes vertically on their sides and not flat. This makes them less likely to break. Don’t be tempted to overfill the box. Fill the empty space with packaging.
Your TV is another example of a fragile item. If you don’t have the original packing box for your TV, pack it in a special wooden crate padded with packing paper. Do not lay the tv flat as this can damage it during moving.
Avoid Leaving Empty Spaces in Boxes
Fill gaps in the boxes with packing paper, clothing, or towels to ensure items do not move around whilst in transit. Leaving empty spaces in boxes may lead to breakages which of course you want to avoid.
Tape Your Moving Boxes Well
If you’ve not prepared early enough you may find yourself rushing to pack. One of the important yet overlooked tips to help you move home is to always seal the boxes with plenty of tape. It’s best to be generous when doing this. Tape is far cheaper than having to replace the contents of a box.
Keep Essentials Handy
Pack essentials such as paperwork, medication, a change of clothes, toothbrushes, and toothpaste in a bag or box before you move. These essential items need to be easily accessible and you might want to keep them with you or add them to the moving truck last so they can be taken out first by you when you arrive at your destination.

Notify Important Contacts
When you buy a new property you need to contact utility providers to inform them of the change of ownership. This means they know when to charge you from and also so that there are no problems before you move in. You will also need to inform the correct individuals of a change of address for council tax bills, your doctor’s surgery, your children’s school etc.
It’s also advisable to inform certain service providers at the home you will be moving out of on your sale date if that applies.
Prepare Well For Moving Day
Moving day can be very tiring. The better you have prepared the less stressful this day will be. Make sure you have snacks and drinks packed away for the journey. It’s important to have packed everything before this day so that packing isn’t a concern. If you are not moving far it may be best to leave young children and pets with friends or relatives to keep them safe and out of the way. This will also relieve your stress and help you focus on moving.

We move a lot as a military family so these are some good tips. We always try to stay organized. And we always hire people to move because we have way too much crap.
Ha, I know, most have way too much. It makes a big difference when you get help in.
Some seriously handy tips but have to admit I won’t be moving for a while! The thought fills me with dread of having to have a full clear out :/ It may take quite some time and I reallt need to stop hoarding! Sim x
I know what you mean but it does help to be well prepared x
I can’t imagine moving right now, with all the stuff we have. We have been trying to reduce clutter and downsize, but it is nice to stay on top of it and really get rid of a lot. Moving is a great way to purge stuff!
It sure is and its also nice to be in a new home as a change can be great.
Great tips. We moved just a few months ago and we did all of those things. What a chore!
It is but it’s harder if you’re not prepared x
I really enjoyed this post, thanks for sharing these tips.
Thanks for visiting.
Yes! Definitely use every space in any available shipping boxes because every bit helps. Also, I learned this one the hard way – make sure to label the boxes. Otherwise, it can be stressful to unpack!!!
Maureen
Ha, yes labeling is very important!!!
I will be helping my mom soon. These tips are very useful.
I hope the move goes well Tara.
I have moved so many times that I think I could have written this! You have fantastic tips.
Ha, you do become a pro after a few moves.
Loving house is difficult but it does help to declutter. These are some amazing tips that could help while one plan to move out. It is important to identify, plan and prepare well before we move out.
It really can make a big difference when you have gotten rid of items you don’t need.
This is such a great post! Moving can be such a pain.
Moving home is such a stressful thing. Your tips will really help home movers. Great idea to remind people to keep essentials handy. I would make sure the kettle and tea bags are packed last and first off!
Labelling all the boxes is definitely a tip not to be missed because when you arrive at your destination finding that box with important items would be a whole lot easier.
I feel very lucky that I’ve not had to move out of somewhere and into somewhere new all at once as that seems stressful. I 100% agree about labeling things right as some of our boxes we stored weren’t labelled right and ended up in totally the wrong rooms when we did move them in x
We’ve done it a couple of time. It’s in the cards again hopefully in the next year or so. It’s much easier when you know how to prepare.
honestly move is a horror story to me! I always fear and it never goes smoothly for me. But it’s inevitable evil so we just have to pull through. Your tips are always welcome!
These are all great and practical tips. Moving can be tough and tiring, decluttering helps!.
It sure can but being prepared can make such a big difference.
Great tips – I agree having a good declutter first is so important and labelling boxes too – I tend to list what is in them on the inside really helps to make things easier on the other side.
Great tips, I think the first thing is decluttering as no point causing extra work of packing, transferring to new property and then leaving in boxes. I have sworn never to move again though lol
I hate hate hate moving! I’ve done it a few times, actually more than four including moving countries lol…Not my fav cup of tea…
I always label the boxes when I move places. It’s so much easier when you unpack things.
We moved from Louisiana to Florida a few years back and had movers. It was the worst experience ever. I loved your tips on how to pack the dishes and TV(s). I never thought of packing them upright and not flat. Such a great idea.
We just moved two months ago and I had trouble finding my essential items including my electric toothbrush! I agree wholeheartedly that you should keep boxes with your essentials handy!
I love these tips. I will soon move out with my husband and these tips will be very helpful. Thanks for these ideas.
Oh wow, congratulations. I hope you both enjoy living in your new home.
Honestly, just thinking about packing up and clearing out is enough to discourage me from making a big move which I’ve been wanting to do for a while now. But small steps to decluttering and clearing out is the best way to get the process going. Thanks for sharing these tips!
Such great tips here, I wish I read this before I moved house and country but I am sure your list is going to help so many out there who are struggling to move home
All wonderful points are well summarized. Having moved many times these tips are very handy indeed and the best time to declutter.
Smart to declutter before you move. And you’re right too, it could definitely work to cut moving costs if you’ve hired someone (and require less boxes and time if you’re doing it yourself).
We’re looking to move soon. I have started the process of de-cluttering, which I’m kind of enjoying. We also plan to give the place a lick of paint (just a refresh) ahead of estate agents photos. It’ll also be a bit nicer for us whilst we still live here as it’ll perk things up! We had an essential items box for move day when we moved into our house, that included our kettle and teabags – that’s definitely my top tip!
It sounds like you are well prepared. I hope it all goes well for you. Ha, yes, a kettle and tea is important!
We might be moving soon and these are good things to take note of.
I hope it all goes well and that these tips have helped Ris.
Moving is always kind of a drag for me. I always say I’m never going to do it again and then after enough time passes I get up the gumption to do it again.
The good thing is you know what to do to make it easier.
I made a massive mistake of not labelling the boxes and it was so hard unpacking the things i needed in each room once I moved. So great tip!
Oh no, well at least you learned from your mistake. You won’t do that again!
I’ve not moved for 20 odd years but I remember it well it was disorganised and chaotic this is so helpful for people moving in the future thank you
It’s awful. I’m hoping to do it again soon once circumstances change.
I couldn’t agree more! You have shared some great tips here. We are moving home again next month, so will keep these in mind 🙂
Brilliant advice and tips, could have done with them last year when we moved..it was horrendous! We’re still reeling from it 10 months on
One more thing . Use up everything you possibly can in your fridge ! Why waste it?
Ha, yes that can be a great idea. Best not to waste food.
Lots of good tips – I like to be organised so when we moved house I labelled everything!
Great tips! Last time we moved was 2002. Before that 2001 and that was overseas which is whole other ordeal!
We have moved house several times and prefer to do our packing as we know what is in each box, we even empty chest of drawers that movers claim they can move when full as the contents always get thrown around and mixed up
That’s a good idea. Emptying draws is important to make sure you look after the contents.
Moving is not easy! For someone who did it several times, it actually takes me months to prepare. I agree with you that it’s best to declutter first before packing. It’s way better if can get rid of unwanted items before you move.
Very good tips for moving home. It is such a stressful time and these ideas are essential in helping alleviate that stress as much as possible. Well done!
Thank you so much for a great article, you’ve covered all the points so well, there’s always so much to consider when moving.
This will be really handy since I am moving soon. Thank you.
Some excellent tips thank you, fortunately we haven’t had to move for the last 10 years
The good thing is you know what to do next time you move.
great tips to remember if I ever move home
These are great tips, it is so stressful moving house, but worth it
I’ve moved a lot over the years. I find it’s good to start packing items you know you won’t need as soon as possible – it’s easy to underestimate how long it takes to pack. We also keep a ‘random bits’ box to put any last minute things to pack, and to keep essentials such as a sharpie, tape and scissors in.
This is very helpful 🤩
Moving is so stressful so these tips are greatly appreciated. Especially labellng boxes.
Some great tips here. Our daughter moves a lot as her husband’s RAF
Some great tips, especially about labelling boxes! And definitely when you have children it’s so important to keep the essentials to hand!
A move is on the cards for us soon as we are in a 2 bedroom with 2 children a girl 9 who has her own room and my son Charlie 5 still shares my room so he needs a bedroom.
It is great to have enough room for everyone.
Lots of handy hints will keep this article in mind when we come to move .
Thanks Clare. It does help to be as prepared as possible.
Great tips here! I found moving a very daunting task when we had to move a few years ago, organisation really helped though!
It certainly can. Moving can be super stressful. Moreso when you are not organised.
We moved last October to an adapted council house after 6 years of fighting for it, we moved with an immunosuppressed child in a stress filled few days, I had contacted so many companies prior to the move to make sure we got a removal team, carpet fitters etc who were on the same page as us…nightmare, never again!
It can be a nightmare but thankfully it isn’t something we do often.
