This lockdown has felt as if it has been going on forever. Thankfully, we are seeing signs that the lockdown is easing as death rates drop. With that, we have seen the opening of schools, business and non-essential shops. Soon hairdressers, beauticians, pet shops, toys stores, etc will be opening their stores and greeting customers. Many of us have been working from home during the crisis. Businesses are now asking staff to return to work part or full time. Some people will understandably have mixed feelings about returning to work no matter what safety precautions are put in place.
There are however ways to make returning to your place of work less daunting.
Talk with Your Boss
Businesses have implemented safety procedures in preparation for their staff to return to work. If you are concerned about the safety implementations being enforced then it’s important to talk with your boss. Some businesses are now supplying staff with masks of varying types depending on their level of interaction with others. Spacing lines have been added to business floors nationwide so people have their own designated area so staff can socially distance. Hand sanitiser is now everywhere.
It isn’t yet essential for all staff to return to their place of work and many can still happily continue working from home. Some businesses are asking staff to come in a few times a week and work from home the rest of the time. This will, of course, depend on what line of work you are in which options will be available.
Benefits of Music
Music can have a wonderful influence on our mood and stress levels. Listening to music on the way into work and even during work if you are allowed can have a positive impact on how you feel about being at work and also on productivity. Some may find music distracting while they work but most will find that it helps them. Research has shown listening to music whilst working can not only enhance your mood but also improve your ability for problem-solving and increase productivity. Even if you can’t listen to music whilst you work you can always set up a portable DAB radio at your desk to listen to during lunchtime.
Promise Yourself a Treat
From a psychological standpoint, we find it easier to get through something challenging or stressful if we have something to look forward to. It could be something relatively small like stopping to grab an ice cream after work, or treating the family to pizza and a movie together when you get home. It doesn’t have to be a daily treat either, something at the end of the week will suffice just to help get you through the working week.
Reach Out to Colleagues
There is more to a place of work than just the building and actual work. Colleagues can really brighten the day and make it easier especially if it’s work you don’t particularly enjoy or that can be extremely stressful. You’ve probably been in touch with work colleagues, but if not it helps to get in touch and have a chat before you return to work.
What do you think my help those returning to work?

This is going to be such a difficult transition phase, especially for people who have been shielding. And lots of people work in very small offices!
It sure is. Hopefully they will cope okay.
Some lovely tips for easing that transition phase. Returning to work can feel quite daunting.
It sure can. Hopefully this post will help.
It’ll be a long time before we’re back to the office. However, I can’t wait to see and speak to my colleagues again, it’s been a tough and stressful period.
It is a stressful time and many colleagues become friends. It’s good to stay in touch.
I am lucky to work for myself but I can really see how returning to work would be so daunting! I think reaching out to colleagues in advance to talk about the return to work would be really helpful.
It sure can. It is helpful to talk to someone in the same position as you’ll be going through the same thing.
Good tips for people who have to return to the office. Personally, I’ll be happy to work from home for the foreseeable future.
Working from home is far better if you can do it. not all places of work will or can offer the option.
Thank you for such wonderfull tips, shall keep in mind and try to save money right away !
Thanks Mubin. Glad you liked the post.
We are very lucky to be self-employed. I can’t imagine how difficult it will be for everyone to go back to work.
I know some people where stressed about returning to work especially where they had to use public transport.
CAnt wait to go back to work , i miss socializing with my clients. Hope i can meet them again soon.
The social part is what many have missed. I hope it’s not too long for you.
It must be a very worrying time if you are returning to work at the minute after months off work. I have had to work through coronavirus and the early weeks were so hard. I didn’t want to go and made myself really upset and stressed out. I kept taking it day by day. If I had not worked through it I don’t think I would have left the house with the fear of catching it.
It was a worrying time. I think some are worrying now with the opening of many businesses. Hopefully this will help.
There are some really good ideas, I deffo agree with talking to colleagues as this will help so much x
It really will. Let’s hope the transition is good for most.
My sister just went back to work and it is seriously tough when you are out of your normal routine due to their crazy virus that literally stoped everything for a bit. She has gotten in a full week so far and things are going well. Love these tips and will share 🙂
Thanks Melissa. Hope hope it all goes well for her.
I’ve recently resumed work and its so taxing. I think I should listen to some soothing music to relieve stress.
I think you’re right. It will really help.
I know many people who are not at all ready for the rigeurs of going back to work, eventhough they have wanted to all during the pandemic lol. These tips are great and I totally agree with talking with your boss about health and safety on the job. It is so very important!
Health and safety is very important and affects all returning to work.
I am personally so relieved to get back to work and see businesses opening. Great tips for those getting back into the groove of things…it can definitely be stressful!
It really can. We all handle stress differently. Some can cope better than others.
I think this is good advice for people returning to work.
Thanks, I hope it helps those that have to go into a place of work.
Yes, music all day and reaching out when needed have been regularly implemented here. Excellent tips!
Thanks Laura. I’m glad you liked the post.
Very intresting post. I love the benefit from music tip.
Thanks Marta, music can really help.
It’s such a stressful time for everybody but I feel so lucky I can continue working from home for a bit longer
These are great tips, thankfully I work from home anyway so it doesn’t effect me but I was planning on doing some nails as I do that for extra money but I’ll be waiting a few more months for that
I’ve been kind of lucky that I’ve worked throughout the lockdown as i work in a primary school. As daunting as it was, my work place was as reasurring as it could have been. Through communication with management, we were able to ensure we knew what we were doing and adhere to the new rules and regulations. By knowing this, it helped prepare for that new routine, so communication is important. I agree about reaching out to collegues. Knowing someone is there for you to talk to, can make all the difference when returning back to work. Music is important! It plays a big part for me, as when I get back from work, i have a shower, music goes on and I belt out songs…badly lol, that’s kind of a stress buster! It really does help. A great read, thank you.
