When it comes to spending our money, we all want to get good value for every penny spent. This does not change regardless of age or financial situation. Therefore, knowing how to make the best decisions for immediate and long-term finances is important. In this post, we look at how to make smart financial decisions in daily life.
Making Smart Financial Decisions
Always Consider Whether A Purchase Is Necessary
You don’t need to scrutinise every single purchase you make. After all, the choice between a Twix and a Mars Bar won’t make a huge impact on your finances. However, when deciding on more expensive items it is important to weigh up financial impact, affordability, and necessity. My husband for example needed a new car for work. He researched various options, decide on a car, and used a car finance calculator to help work out monthly repayments to make sure we could afford it.
Know Your Full Financial Situation
As a general rule, it is important to be aware of the money coming in and the money going out. If you have far more going out than in then there is obviously a problem. It is important to keep a record of everything so there can be no errors. Where you are overspending, you’ll need to identify areas where you can cut back. It literally pays to find ways of making savings.
Research The Market
Need a new phone and contract? Compare phone prices and tariffs from different networks. Need to renew your car insurance? Shop around. Never just accept a renewal quote. Looking to buy a washing machine? The likelihood is you’ll be able to shop around and find something suitable with the requirements you need without too much effort.
A little shopping around can help you find cheaper deals for the same product. Also, an important thing to consider is timing. When buying a new phone or even car, consider getting it after the new models come out. That way older options whether it’s a new phone but older model or second hand car and an older plate is more likely to cost less.
Consider the Alternatives
You always have options when it comes to making a purchase. Even with fashion items, you could consider slightly different styles from different brands. Buying designer brands can set you back far more than high street brands. Think logically, do you really need it? Is this something you can buy in sales rather pay full price for? With expensive items, it is important not to rush into making a purchase, think it through, sleep on it, and as we mentioned to plenty of research.
Plan, Budget, Set Goals
If there is a purchase you really need to make it can help to plan in advance. You could work on spending less and saving the amount saved to put towards this. Set a goal to save a specified amount over a set period of time and aim to sell unwanted items to increase the amount you have to put towards the purchase. Where possible aim to use what you can save when buying rather than borrowing money to put towards the purchase. The aim isn’t to increase your financial burden when you can avoid this.
Ultimately, there is nothing wrong with spending money. You just need to make sure that your finances are used wisely. Pay off debts as early as you can to avoid paying more than you need to in interest.
