Autumn Decoration Ideas for Your Home

It can be nice to create a few new focal points within the home with the changing seasons. These can be easy to do using items you might find outside and also a few props you will find easily in stores during this time of year. Adding themed decorations can make a home look pretty, add a splash of colour and also give it a different look which can also make a nice change. Autumn brings with it some beautiful colours and these can be brought into the home to bring the outside in and create a soothing environment.

Autumn Decoration Ideas for Your Home

There are a range of options that can be considered when it comes to decorating for fall. They don’t need to be complicated and can be fun to put together whether you are doing it on your own or with kids. It could soon become a seasonal tradition like decorating a Christmas tree each year! Here we will look at just a few options to give you some seasonal inspiration and get you started.

Just one thing before you get started, it is important to remember in some instances, less is more!!! Overloading a range of items in one area doesn’t necessarily work. It can be displeasing to the eye, make the area look cluttered and not give the desired effect.

Window Decorations

I worked around an existing potted plant that was already on the window sill. To this I added some small candles due to the limited space. These can be lit if you want to create mood lighting in the evening. ( If lighting candles, make sure nothing flammable is nearby, the candles being used here are just for decoration. ) A few pinecones, some conkers and some small pumpkins and I had a pretty looking Autumn themed window sill.

Table Decorations

There are so many different ideas when it comes to table decorations. You can use dried plants, fresh plants and swap these out every so often as they start to wilt etc. I made a great decoration using a brass bowl I have and some other pieces that make it look pretty and Autumnal. You’ll find step by step instructions on how to make this in an upcoming post.

Door Sill / Threshold Decorations

My flat has a cute Juliette balcony. The sill or threshold to this is normally kept empty over the spring, summer and parts of autumn as we open the doors daily to let in the fresh air and get rid of stale air or sometimes the smell of cooking This year I thought I’d mix it up a bit and add some cute decorations to this area. A plant, candle, pinecones, pumpkins, a shell, teeny tint fairy lights later and we had a nice little set up that added to the Autumnal feel.

Decorations for the Mantlepiece

A mantlepiece can cover a much larger area than the latter decoration options. Here I like to make use of a Christmas wreath that I have and add Autumnal themed items. A few small pumpkins, some pretty star fairy lights and a few additional pine cones added to those in the wreath formed a lovely focal point for the room.

Suggested Additions for Your Autumnal Decorations:

Pretty coloured leaves.

Fresh ivy can make a nice addition to decorations and lasts for a while too.

Pinecones – they’re everywhere and free at this time of year!!!

Conkers – as above.

Fairy lights – most of us have one or two lying around.

Various candles – these can be white or coloured. You can use a range of different sizes too.

Pumpkins – these are available in a range of sizes. They can be found in different shades of orange, orange and green and also white ones have been making an appearance too.

Branches with berries or crab apples (be careful with berries as some can drop off and stain surfaces.)

Fake branches with berries.
