(Collaborative post) It’s probably possible to live without technology in today’s world, but seriously, who wants to!!! Modern technology is pretty handy and has become something many of us rely on for our livelihoods and sanity. Most of us rely on internet-enabled technology for a smooth and fluid daily life – it does, after all, help us with our work, communication, entertainment, fitness, and just about everything else. Alas, there’s no avoiding the fact that it can be expensive. As a result, it’s important that we’re taking care of our technology as much as possible. That way, we can increase longevity and avoid spending too much of our hard-earned cash on replacements and reduce environmental waste.
How To Take Care of Your Computer
Start From A Good Point
You wouldn’t buy a car in bad condition and expect it to last for many years, would you? The same principle applies to your tech. If you’re buying a low-quality or overly old laptop, then it’ll be likely that it stops working long before you’d like it to. Therefore, it’s recommended that you start from a good point in order to minimise the chances of something going wrong — or at least ensure that it only happens well into the future. You don’t necessarily need to buy new, but if you’re taking the refurbished route, make sure it’s from a professional company that really knows what they’re doing.
Protect the Exterior and Interior
You can tell when a computer hasn’t been looked after. The exterior area is usually marked. While this might not impact what’s going on inside, it’s normally reflective of the care that the owner has taken with the device. We are more likely to look after a device if we have received it in a new and shiny state.
Avoid eating and drinking near your computer. It’s easy to spill drinks or soup on them and cause irreversible damage. It makes sense to also have clean hands when you use your device and wipe the screen and keyboard down every so often.
We also need to look at protecting and the interior of devices too. There are a few ways that you can do this. One is to update your device as and when new versions are released. Another is to invest in antivirus software. You’ll need to make sure you run regular antivirus scans.
You should also look for signs that you’re pushing your device too hard, such as if it’s overheating. You should make sure there is suitable ventilation in the room to keep it cool.
If you take steps to prevent things from going wrong inside and outside your computer will last much longer.
Work With Experts
Of course, even if you do take steps to keep things working well, it’s always possible that you’ll experience one sort of problem or another. If that happens it’s best to take it to an expert to be repaired. Remember that not all computer repair experts are created equal. One company might fix your computer easily whereas another might cause additional issues. So before you entrust someone with your device, be sure to read up on the experiences of other customers. It might just save you having to fork out for a new computer.
Nothing will last forever, but you can go a long way to getting the most from your machine by taking as much care as possible!

My computer is always covered in crumbs. I do need to take better care of it.
Oh dear, might be an idea to get a mini vacuum to help with that.
I need to keep these in mind. I always worry that my laptop might stop working. It’s over 5 years old, so I try to keep it as safe as I can.

I’m glad you found this interesting Tasheena.
This is super useful – I think the idea of not eating and drinking near it are really important. I take my computer on location so much and it has so much dust and it…well doesn’t feel it’s best!
It makes a big difference. I hear so many spill drinks on their compters and have to get them repaired or replaced. Both are costly so it’s better to be safe than sorry.
You certainly need to do this, especially if you work from home and have children who use the computer for their homework.
I agree. Kids are not always as careful as we’d like around computers.
I agree , some task are meant for the experts only.
Better to be safe than sorry.
I have an IT company who do bi-weekly updates to my laptop! It is great having them because then I don’t have to worry about it!

It is important o look after our computers as they are normally expensive. I wouldn’t want to have to replace mine at the moment.
They can be very expensive to have to replace a compute all of a sudden.
I take care of my computer but the worst thing I do, is let me kids use it for their games!
I’d keep an eye on them so they don’t destroy it. Good luck!!!
This is a great post on how to take care of your computer. I don’t do a great job at this and this is really useful.
The good thing is there isn’t too much to do.
It’s important to have a good tech that you trust. Anti-virus software is also a must. I make sure to scan mine regularly for tune ups and checks.
I agree. We all need a good anti-virus installed.
Great tips! It is always a good idea to keep up on computer maintenance especially if you need it for your profession.
It really is, you don’t need to have the stress of having to fix it to keep up with deadlines.

I’ve been trying very hard to take care of my computer but my daughter uses it sometimes and it gets sticky. I have been trying harder to watch her when she is playing games and it’s getting better!
It’s harder to manage looking after them when the kids use them too. It’s best to get them to wash hands first and not handle food near them.
As an ex-it support engineer I find your post very good for regular users. Nice job!
Thanks Lyosha. That’s great to hear.
I tend to have a dedicated space for my laptop, as if not, it tends to get destroyed.

I make sure that I turn off my computer every so often and make sure there is no damage to the hard drive or system. I think it is just being careful with the computer and understanding its limit that can make the computer last longer.
Overworking a computer can be detrimental. It is important to turn it off when you don’t need it.
Can’t agree more, but I must admit that sometime I’m lazy. 🙂
I think we all can be sometimes Unta x
My computer is my lifeline so yes…. it is so important to take care of it and keep it running and looking amazing 😉
I’m with you, if mine breaks, I’m in trouble!!!
I now use my husbands old macbook, as although not old he updated his earlier this year, so my chromebook is backup. He gave me such a lecture a couple of days ago about the state of mine. But now it is looking lovely, it wasn’t that bad but was to his standard
Oh dear, the good thing is he has high standards which means you’ll both now take good care of it.
Maintaining your computer is so important I do it all the time
