When trainers first came about, they were purely functional, people would only wear them for sports. In time they became a fashion item. Many shy away from wearing trainers with anything other than jeans or leggings as they don’t know how to match them with other outfits. If you get it right, you can create some great unique outfits.  We don’t always know what sorts of styles or colours of clothes work best for our complexion or body shape.  It can sometimes be beneficial to consult a personal stylist.

If you don’t wear trainers often but would like to start experimenting with your outfits a bit more, you need to know which trainers work best with different items from your wardrobe.

Types Of Trainer

Chunky

First off, you need to know how to pick the right pair of trainers and what’s currently in fashion. Chunky soles are a big trend right now, especially on running shoes. The kind of shoes that you think of as ‘dad trainers’ are actually very popular due to the level of comfort they offer.  Styled correctly they can be a great fashion accessory.  The nostalgia appears to be a big part of the appeal here and trainers that have styles or colours that look like they were pulled straight from the 90’s are incredibly popular.

Athleisure

This is where trainers look as if they were designed for sports.  That could cover most trainers.  This indicates that many are leaning more toward running trainers or tennis shoes over anything else.  They can be paired with a full sportswear-inspired outfit or with casual jeans and t-shirt combo.

White

When it comes to colours, white trainers are always in fashion, no matter how the trends change.  More specifically at the moment, people are wearing a lot of pale pinks and greys, and anything with a bold metallic finish is popular too.

Now that we’ve covered the main trends that are popular here are some styling suggestions.

Dresses And Skirts

Trainers can work really well with dresses and skirts.  They are a great way to get a more casual, comfortable look.  When choosing trainers to go with a dress, particularly a dress that is heavily patterned, opt for a plain trainer.  A nice pair of Vans shoes are ideal because they’re plain and simple, but they still look stylish, and they’re easy to match with most things.

Black and white canvas shoes are good basic option.  You could also experiment with different colours.

When it comes to the colour of the trainers, you should try to match them with the dress if possible. For example, if you are wearing a pretty autumn dress with lots of warm colours, you should go for something like an orange or red. Alternatively, you can pick white trainers to offset the colours on the dress and balance the outfit.  This works especially well in the summer if you are wearing a very colourful dress.

Putting together an outfit with a skirt works in a similar way.  If you wear a plain skirt, colour match the top and trainers.  Alternatively, wear a plain top and match the trainers and skirt.

If you are wearing a shorter skirt or dress that shows off more of your legs, be careful with the style of trainers that you wear. Anything too chunky won’t look right.  A slim style trainer will look far better.

Jeans

Trainers and jeans are a classic combination and it’s a great go-to option when you need a quick casual yet stylish outfit.  Make sure that socks don’t show.  Ankle socks are good but you don’t have to wear any socks at all.  Try rolling up jeans to show a little ankle as it creates a better look. You should also keep it simple when it comes to styles and colours. White trainers are always good with jeans, but make sure that they are clean and fresh looking.  If you are going to wear a more colourful pair of trainers, try to match them with your top.

The style of trainer that you should wear also depends on the style of jeans that you are wearing. If you have slightly baggy jeans, thick-soled running trainers will work very well. But they will not look great if you are wearing skinny jeans. If you are trying to match trainers with a pair of skinny jeans, you should wear something slimmer.

Trainers are such a versatile wardrobe essential that can be paired with a variety of outfits. They’re obviously not for a formal outfit, apart from that, you can wear them on most occasions.

I pretty much wear my Converse with everything – skirts, dresses, trousers – from Spring to Autumn, and then fur lined trainers or boots for Winter. And wellies for all those Scottish rainy days. They have to be red though!
