Dressing in Style

It’s warming up, yaaaaayyyyyy!!!! Soon enough I will be baring my frighteningly pale legs for all to see in my spring dresses, I’m so sorry.  You see, I love dresses, they’re my favourite form of clothing.  The right dresses can help us express ourselves in various ways. Fashion can have a profound effect on our mental health and wellbeing.  You can create a relaxed, flirtatious, casual, or professional look with the right style of dress.  It takes time to perfect but those that do it best make it look effortless.  It’s important to learn from early on that not every dress will suit everyone.  This post explores what it takes to make sure the dress you wear reflects who you are and what you want.

Dress Length

Dress length is important.  The length of a dress can influence the way it looks on the wearer and what occasions it is appropriate for.  A longer dress may be warmer, but it may also make you appear short because it conceals your legs. On the other hand, a short dress can be more appropriate in summer, unless you wear it in the cooler seasons indoors in a controlled climate.

Dress lengths fall into different categories. For example, a short dress is said to be a mini dress. Meanwhile, a floor-length dress is called a maxi dress. You can browse midi fashions when you want something more midway. A midi dress is one with a below-the-knee and above-the-ankle hemline. The advantage of a midi dress is that it can potentially work better for a great range of occasions.

A Comfortable, Complimentary Fit

It’s important when dressing in style to select a dress that fits well and complements your body shape.  Excessively tight clothing can make you feel uncomfortable, ill, and can affect confidence.  The length of a dress can be important in the way we feel.  Choose what works best for you whether it’s mini, midi or maxi.  It can help to select a style that accentuates and flatters features should you feel confident in doing so.

A dress with a cinched waist and a flowing skirt tends to accent the waist or lead the eye toward your upper body.  The bodice of the dress should show off your figure, while the skirt needs to be comfortable, as well as fashionable. A bodycon dress, for example, highlights every curve.  It may not, however, have enough give to feel comfortable for an entire day.  An A-Line dress, in contrast, has a loose skirt that is far less constricted. It can potentially conceal assets you might prefer to highlight.  The choice is all about the style and the look you aim to create.

Understand How Your Dress Affects Your Look

You cannot successfully choose any length or style of dress until you understand how that dress can affect your overall look. For example, a dress that is free and flowing gives the appearance of calm confidence. Your dress choice can also affect how short or tall you look.  To counterbalance this choose heels or flats accordingly.

Also, remember a dress with no embellishments can obscure your waistline and cause your whole body to blend into one. Separating the lower from the upper half with a sash or a belt is an excellent way to reestablish clearly defined zones and add a little flair to an otherwise one-dimensional dress.

Sustainable Living

We all have our favourite clothing items and it’s natural to be devasted when they get damaged.  Many of us are now looking to reduce our waste and get the most out of our clothing especially the more expensive items.  For this reason, there has been a growth in online clothing repair companies.  These companies, of course, can’t perform miracles but quite often can repair damaged dresses like one I got caught in an escalator once, oops.  Enough said about that.

In Summary

Clearly, when dressing in style, dress selection is a multi-faceted process. The best way to approach it is to have a rough idea of the desired look you want to create what you want before you shop. Yet, it helps to be open to new ideas during the process. Make sure any dress you pick ticks the check boxes in your mind. Then you can always use it to dress to impress.

Are there any styles of dress that you prefer to wear or that you feel compliment you the most?

Dresses can really boost confidence although that can be influenced by the length and style.

Always good to know what is seen as appropriate or not. I also believe that one should do what feels right for themselves. I use to work in the fashion industry, and I love the way you talk about choosing your dress. Thank you.

It’s true, we should do what feels right for us as individuals. It’s interesting to see how quite a few lack confidence in their choices and hopefully this will have helped steer them in their choices.

I love wearing dresses. A nice feminine dress affects not just the way I really feel. I love maxi dresses and midi, from soft fabrics and mostly with floral patterns.

Maxi dresses are my summer go-to, I love them. You can never have enough!

I love wearing dresses, especially in the summer! My preferred style is something I like to refer to as a ‘house dress’ but could more accurately be described as a muu muu! I tend to be pretty casual so wear my dresses a little over sized, around calf length and with trainers or tevas…it looks cooler than it sounds I promise!

Ha, I know exactly what look you’re describing and it does work well for a casual yet stylish look.

I always go for knee length dresses and give an illusion of a slim body. Most of my dresses have geometric designs which helps boost my confidence by hiding my flaws (especially my tummy).

Geometric designs are very popular. I bet they look lovely on you Kristine.

Good tips here and I am with you on the dress length. Too short can ruin the look completley x

A dress will never be a one-size-fits-all. Thus, I agree with you that it’s important to select a dress that fits and complements our body shape. Thank you for sharing these tips. Can’t wait to go dress shopping once this pandemic is over.
