(Collaborative post) Bringing up your child with an optimistic outlook will provide them with the necessary skills for dealing with challenges and setbacks. Being optimistic will also support your child’s mental health, helping them to see things in a positive way and motivating them to achieve their goals. These simple tips will show you How to Raise an Optimistic Child.
How to Raise an Optimistic Child
Parents will have different priorities when it comes to raising their children. A child’s development and approach to life will be influenced not only by their parents but also by their siblings and their school friends. It goes without saying that finding a good school is very important. We may not have much influence over external factors that affects our children but as parents but we can do the following:
Avoid Negativity
To help your child foster an optimistic mindset, you will need to set a good example. This means avoiding negative comments when something goes wrong and looking for the positives. Teach your child that optimists look on the bright side using the ‘glass half full or half empty’ example. Show them how to search for the good even in bad situations and encourage your child to view mistakes as learning opportunities.
Use Positive Reframing
Try to approach negative situations at home more positively. For example, instead of saying, “You didn’t do well on your spelling test because you didn’t spend time practicing” say, “I’ve noticed that when you practiced last week you did really well” or if your child has made a mess in their bedroom you could say “doesn’t it feel nicer when your room is tidy, so that you have more space to play your games in here”
Encourage Resilience
Discuss the importance of resilience and perseverance with your child. This will help to foster a growth mindset. A growth mindset is an optimistic way of thinking, which will support your child through challenges and setbacks. Children with a growth mindset believe that their abilities will improve over time if they just keep on trying.
Give more Responsibility
Show your child trust by giving them more responsibilities at home. This will help to build their confidence and develop an optimistic outlook by increasing their feelings of competency. These responsibilities could include weekly chores like setting the table for dinner, putting out the rubbish, or caring for a pet. They could earn pocket money by helping in the home and learn valuable money skills.
Encourage Gratitude
Finally, encourage your child to think about all of the positives in their life. This could be anything from doing well in a school exam, to thinking about someone that they love. Encourage your child to write down everything that makes them happy in a gratitude journal. This kind of daily gratitude will help your child to maintain an optimistic attitude and it will also support their mental health.
When considering how to raise an optimistic child which suggestion(s) would you think would work best? Did you have anything else to suggest that may be helpful?
