The hairstyles you wear will be influenced by various factors. The thickness and type of hair you have, your taste, the occasion etc. We all have our own style preferences. However, there are a few general tips that can help you figure out which hairstyle will look best on you. In this guide, we will look at How to Choose the Best Hairstyle for You.

How to Choose the Best Hairstyle for You
One of the most important things to consider when choosing a hairstyle is your face shape.
A Round Face
If you have a round face shape, the best hairstyles are ones that add length to your face. Longer hair is more flattering for a round face because it balances out the fullness of your cheeks and makes your face look more oval-shaped. For example, you could try a lob (long bob) with long, side-swept bangs or layers framing your face. You can also go for a longer style with waves or curls to give your face more definition.
Avoid short, blunt, or stick straight styles. These will make your round face look even wider. Also, steer clear of chin-length bobs because they tend to emphasise the width of your face. If you have a round face and want to wear your hair short, go for a pixie cut with longer layers around your face.
You could also try a half-up style or a low bun if you want to wear your hair up. These will give the illusion of a longer face. Avoid high buns or ponytails, which will make your round face look even shorter.
If You Have An Oval Face
If you have an oval face shape, you can pretty much pull off any hairstyle. This is because an oval face shape is considered to be the “ideal” face shape. That being said, there are a few things to remember when choosing a hairstyle for an oval face.
If you want to add volume to your hair, go for a style that has layers or waves. This will give your hair more body and make your face look fuller. However, if you have thin or fine hair, avoid too layered or choppy styles. These will make your hair look thinner. Instead, go for a style with gentle layers or long, sweeping bangs.
If you want to wear your hair up, try a bun or ponytail. These styles will show off your face shape and can be dressed up or down.
Avoid styles that cover up your face. You want to show off that gorgeous oval shape!
A Square Face Shape
If you have a square face shape, the best hairstyles are ones that soften your angular jawline. Try a style with long, sweeping bangs or layers around your face. You can also go for a bob with rounded edges. Avoid styles that are too short or blunt as they will accentuate your square jaw.
Try a soft and romantic updo or a low ponytail if you want to wear your hair up. These styles will help to soften your features and give your face a more gentle appearance. Avoid high buns or ponytails, which will only emphasise your square jawline.
Heart Face
If you have a heart face shape, the best hairstyles are ones that minimise the width of your forehead and emphasise your cheekbones. Try a style with long, side-swept bangs or layers around your face. You can also go for a bob with shorter layers in the front and longer layers in the back.
If you want to wear your hair up, try a half-up style or a low bun. These styles will help to balance out the width of your forehead and give your face more definition. Avoid high buns or ponytails, as they will accentuate the width of your forehead.
So, how do you choose a hair colour that matches your features? When it comes to hair colour, there are a few things to keep in mind with regard to your skin tone.
Fair Skin Tone
If you have a fair skin tone, you can pretty much pull off any hair colour. That being said, some colours will look better on you than others. If you want to go for a natural-looking hair colour, try a shade that is one or two shades lighter or darker than your natural hair colour. For example, if your natural hair colour is light brown, you could try a dark blonde or light caramel shade.
If you want to go for a bolder hair colour, try a red or copper shade. These colours will give your skin a healthy and vibrant glow. Avoid stark white or black. These colours can make you look pale.

Medium Skin Tone
You can wear any colour but remember the golden rule: warm colours (red, orange, yellow) will make you look fresh and young while cool colours (blue, green, purple) will create an elegant look. If you are medium skin toned with blue eyes, go for an ash blonde balayage. You can also try the reverse balayage that is very popular right now. This look is achieved by lightening the hair from the bottom up. Read this guide on “Reverse Balayage: How to Achieve the Look The Right Way” to learn more.
Dark Skin Tone
You can pretty much pull off any colour if you have dark skin. However, if you want to make a statement go for a vivid colour like blue or purple; if you are not ready to take the plunge, then try highlights in these colours. You can also try ombre or sombre, which is a more subtle way of adding colour to your hair.
No matter what your skin tone is, remember that the right hairstyle will complement your features. Take your time to find a style that suits you best, and don’t be afraid to experiment until you find the perfect one!

These are such great tips. I have on more than one occasion picked a terrible hairstyle because I liked it on someone else. I didn’t stop to think about my own face shape.
These are great tips. Hair, clothes, glasses – almost anything, really. They all might look good on one person but not on you. You have to take everything about yourself into account when choosing all those things.
I tend to leave my hair long. It works for me since my hair is so thick. If it was short then it would puff right out.
Aahhh yes, I know the hair type. The weight helps stop it from puffing up as much as it would. Long hair is best in that case.
I need a different hair style. This post is very helpful for me.
I’m so pleased you liked the post Tara x
This is really good to know. I have been wanting to change up my hairstyle, but wasn’t sure what to do. This will be really helpful when I decide.
I’m so glad you found the post helpful Kathy.
I struggle with this. I look for professional advice. I want my stylist to choose the best cut and style for me but that rarely happens. It’s good to know that certain styles compliment your face shape.
Good advice! I have a round head and have always had long hair. As I get older though I’ve noticed my head is becoming more square (jowls) and I’ve been slowly going shorter and shorter with the length of my hair.

I have an oval face so it’s good to know I can pull off any length or style. I’ve been wanting a change lately. Maybe I’ll go short!
I’m going to be honest I don’t really know what shape my face is because I know I need to lose some weight of it. But it’s good to know there’s options for all face shapes to find something flattering x
In that case, avoid having a bob. You need to look at longer hairstyles that make the face look longer.
This is a good read. Hairstyle really depends on a lot of factors. For me aside from it, it goes along with my mood and style too.
I have had every hair style and hair colour over the years, and finally think I have found what suits me best and is also easy to manage.
I always have trouble identifying my face shop haha, that’s why it’s hard for choosing haircut too. I just keep it longer. Thanks for these tips!
If you use a hairdresser it might be an idea to ask them. They should be able to help with face shape and style advice.
I don’t have enough hair left to matter! But yes, I can see how certain hair styles are best for certain face shapes and skin tones. And having the hair style that is best can go very far; not just in looking good, but also for one’s self confidence.
I can use these tips for my self and for my daughter! Thanks for sharing this these tips with us!
Love this! I’ve always wondered how hairdressers decide what will look good on you!
Ha, now you know!
These are interesting styles but I didn’t know that there is a heart face shape. I think maybe I didn’t focus on it. Thank you for sharing!
These are good points to consider when thinking about sporting a new hairstyle!
Thanks so much, I’m glad you liked the post.
This is really to reference for when I want to change my hair color. I’ve had a short hair cut for the past 12 years and never looked back.
Any hairstyle and colour is perfect for me due to my face shape.
I have an oval face and my hairdresser said the same thing that I could easily try different hairstyles and it would easily suit me
It is also about personal preference. Try a few and see how you go.
Thanks for the tips. I have had the same hairstyle for 20+ years simply because I didn’t know what else to do. Really appreciate the thought you put into these ideas.
These are so great tips, love them . However, at this point, I let my daughters style me.
I have always had longer hair because shorter hair does not agree with me! Different lengths and styles definitely compliment a person in a variety of ways.
I have a square face shape so I always careful of my hairstyle. Thanks for your tips!
Thanks for your comment. I’m glad you found this interesting.
I have an oval face but i have a high forehead. That challenges me for certain hairstyles.
You can adjust styles to allow for this. The section for oval head shape on my post should help.
I’ve kind of threw all of this out the window. I just shaved my head and kept some hair on the top. The relief I felt was amazing when I watched over 25 years of the same hair fall to the floor!
I never thought about how a hairstyle and face shape would affect each other before. Interesting read!
I have an oval shaped face, and I can literally fit any hairstyle.
That makes life so much easier x
This post will really help me a lot to choose the best hairstyle for me! Such a really great and very helpful article!
I typically wear my hair in a ponytail or braid (when it is long enough). I’m not a fan of hair in my face which is why I rarely wear it down.
I love mixing up my hair styles which is why I keep my hair nice and long all year round.
It can be better to mix them up rather than having the same style all the time.
Good article! But I love having a new hairstyle every time I do hair cut haha.
It can be nice to have a change every so often.
Now I’m wondering if I have the right hairstyle haha!
Why not try something new, that might work out well for you.
I am not very good with hairstyles so I go for the easy option and have a perm much easier for me to manage
At the end of the day it’s all about what you feel most comfortable with x
