How to Keep your Skin Hydrated all through the Winter!

It’s getting colder!  OMG noooooo!!!  I must admit I hate the colder weather due to my Mediterranean background I am much more suited to warm summers than cold, dark, wet autumns and winters.  Just the thought makes me shiver.  As we begin to layer up with scarves, hats gloves etc. one thing we tend to forget is that our skin on our face is exposed to the elements.  The colder weather doesn’t do my skin any favours.  I hate the fact that the harsh winter weather is tough on my skin.  Cold temperatures mean low humidity which dries out the skin.

P1060045Cold winds can also dry out exposed skin and to add insult to injury being indoors doesn’t do your skin any good either as central heating also dries out the skin.  So with skin being assaulted from just about every angle possible this often results in dry chapped lips, which can be rather painful and the skin on the face may become red, rough and peel / flake.  Cold and dry air can also encourage fine wrinkles around the eyes.

So what’s the solution?

Wash in warm water rather than hot as hot water can strip moisture from the skin.  Don’t use soap unless it is pH balanced and make sure that when you dry your skin you pat dry, never rub dry.  Apply moisturiser to the skin whilst the skin is still moist to seal in moisture.

When addressing the skin on the face make sure that after cleansing you apply a hydrating mist such as that from Botanicals to help remove the last traces of cleanser, balance skin pH and help increase the skins moisture levels.  This is available in rose and camellia and mandarin and chamomile.  I was sent a bottle of the latter to try and was impressed with the results.  This 100% natural, certified organic toner is great for soothing the skin thanks to the lavender and chamomile extracts, the white tea helps to neutralise free radicals due to its antioxidant properties and the mandarin helps tone the skin.  It’s the perfect base for moisturiser although I would suggest if you use it prior to going outside in the day then make sure that your moisturiser contains sun protection no matter what the weather.  I used it in the morning before applying moisturiser and makeup and also at night to help remove traces of make up.

DSC03503This mist has a lovely aroma and is really simple to apply.  My skin is generally combination but the cold really dries it out and I get dry patches especially around my mouth although I must admit I don’t always drink enough water.  It doesn’t take long for you to see a result after using the mist and the skin feels noticeable softer and hydrated.  The essential oils in the skin don’t leave your face feeling oily after application but refreshed.  You don’t need much either, just a quick spray from about 20cm distance from the face will allow for an even and extensive coverage.  The mist absorbs into the skin quickly which is handy when you are in a hurry.  This is a versatile product as it can be used all year around to help keep the skin on the face hydrated and looking great.

A quick word of advice though you should always try to keep your fluid levels up by drinking plenty of water.  Be careful as drinks such as tea and coffee contain tannins which have a diuretic effect.  Carbonated drinks also have a diuretic effect so help to increase water loss so a no no where possible.

Foods that contain essential fatty acids are also a must.  These include fish, flax seeds, walnuts, soy beans, evening primrose oil.  Inclusion in the diet helps your skin maintain natural oil levels.

Excellent tips. My skin is horrible during the winter. So I have to make sure that I pay close attention to looking after it. Right now I’m using Vaseline from the tub (I know). Not really enjoying it so I will bare this in mind.
