How can you begin clearing your debts?
Finding yourself with large amounts of debt can be a challenging financial situation to be in, resulting in worry and stress that can affect your day-to-day life. Although it can be overwhelming, having a plan in place to manage this can help you on the journey to clearing your debt.
Aside from relieving the pressure, getting rid of debt is important to secure your financial future and ensure you’re not paying large amounts in interest over the long-term. The longer you borrow for, the more it will end up costing. Plus, having an accumulation of debt can negatively impact your credit score, affecting future borrowing such as mortgages.
We’ll take a look at ways in which you can begin managing your debt and get out of the red once and for all.

Prioritise
The first step is to take a look at your debt and prioritise what needs paying off first. This could be high interest loans, for example, or those that you’ve had for an increased length of time. Make it
your plan to tackle these first, especially if you find your current repayments are only covering the interest.
Budget
To be able to pay off your debt, you’ll need to develop a budget. Create a plan to minimise any unnecessary outgoings and use this to start paying off your loans, credit cards or other debt.
Using a personal loan with a lower interest rate can also help you manage your current debts. This could allow you to clear your high interest loans and afford the lower monthly repayments.
Debt consolidation
This is where you combine a number of debts such as loans into one, single debt. Although this can reduce the interest, it can sometimes be more expensive in the long term, so you’ll need to calculate whether this is worth it in your situation.
You could endure extra charges for missing payments or for repaying your other loans back early. If you extend the payback term, this could also increase the overall cost of your loan.

Getting help and advice
If you’re still struggling to pay your debt, it’s a good idea to get some advice. Lenders offer Debt Management Plans, as do debt management companies, but it’s important to ensure they’re regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. These plans can provide a way of making smaller and more affordable payments, but some companies will charge a set-up fee.
Another way to get help is through an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA). This is an agreement with lenders to pay back your debts, worked out on what you can afford.
Citizens Advice also has lots of information on managing debt, budgeting and rent arrears, so it’s worth visiting their site if you find that you’re not in control of your finances.
