Biking with Your Child to School

(Collaborative post) As you know I’m a firm believer that it is important to get children outside, encouraging them to exercise, and letting them having fun at the same time. Exercise and fresh air are beneficial for everyone, and biking provides both. My children first got excited about riding their bikes on a visit to Center Parcs Elveden Forest. Since then they want to ride bikes everywhere!!! One way to facilitate this alongside getting them to exercise is to bike to school with your child. Not only does this help both of you stay in shape, but it also gives you more quality time together. The nice thing about biking is that it does not have to be intense. Hop onto your women’s cruiser bike grab your child and their bike and get biking with your child to school.

Biking has more benefits than being a good form of exercise. Exercise, in general, is advantageous for school-aged children, and this is evident in the classroom.

Burning off Energy to Fight the Wiggles

Even when the ride is not intense, biking burns calories and energy. This is a good way for children, especially younger ones, to calm the body before school begins. Children, in general, have excess energy, and this can make it difficult for them to sit still and focus on learning. When they exercise before school, they are more likely to be able to concentrate throughout the day.

Teachers See the Difference

The benefits of biking, or exercise in general, can be seen in the classroom. Along with physical benefits, exercise has been shown to improve cognition and reduce mental health issues. Although any amount of physical activity is beneficial, researchers have discovered that exercising 20 to 30 minutes a day for three to five days a week results in a variety of benefits:

Releases hormones that provide a positive environment for brain cell growth

Improves brain development

Improved memory

Better academic achievement

Improves mood and reduces the occurrence of depression

Better cooperation

More focused attention

All of these benefits improve how children act and behave in the classroom. Teachers notice a distinct difference between children that participate in regular exercise and those that do not. Keep Your Child Safe

Before you begin your biking adventures, you should ensure that your child is safe. A good-fitting helmet is imperative for both of you. You should also dress your child in bright clothes that are easy to move in.

Pick the safest path to your child’s school. If there is a bike path, that is the ideal way to make the journey. If that is not an option, bike along quieter streets where you can. Teach your child to stop at all stop signs and to follow the rules of the road. You should also use the proper signals for turning and stopping. Although other motorists are supposed to keep an eye out for bikers, it is always a good idea to be on the defensive. I’m always extra aware of cars backing out of driveways whether the kids are walking or cycling.

If biking with your child to school sounds like a good idea, but you are wary of riding a bike, do not worry. An electric tricycle is a good alternative, as it eliminates any balance issues and reduces the amount of effort you have to use.

Are you biking with your child to school? Do you enjoy cycling?

Yup. I agree. It’s good for children to do lots of outdoor activities rather than being glued to a screen. Biking should be encouraged.

    1. admin

I’m with you. The less screen time the better!!!

  2. Amber Myers

This would be a good idea. If the school was closer, I would do this with my daughter!

    1. admin

That’s a shame. You could drive part way and cycle the rest though.

  3. michelle

I loved it when we did this when my kids were you g, sadly once we moved it was just too far and too dangerous to cycle to school., The kids missed it though.

    1. admin

That’s such a shame although biking over the weekends and after school works well too.

  4. Stephanie

We ride bikes to school once it cools off enough that they aren’t drenched in sweat before even starting their day. We are *almost* to that time of year here. Once the weather is nice enough, my husband and I both ride bikes with our boys to school unless it’s a day I’m working there since I have too much to carry for the bike.

    1. admin

It’s great to hear you guys get to go biking with the kids.

  5. Nisha

It is my wish that children all over the world get this opportunity to exercise on the way to school and back. Unfortunately, not all societies are privileged with having the right infrastructure in place and some even live too far away from school to cycle.

    1. admin

It can be hard depending on where you live. Most schools where we are are based on catchment which helps.

  15. Samantha Donnelly

I wish we could have done this with C when she was younger, but it was too far and too dangerous on our road to consider it, if it is doable it really is a great way to get to school

    1. admin

That’s such a shame although you can always go biking outside of school hours.

  22. Laura

I don’t think I could ride with them to school as I’m a bit cautious of how busy it gets on the road in the morning but I definitely want to make an effort to get out on our bikes on weekends

    1. admin
