(Collaborative post) With everything that has happened over the last few years, working from home has gone from being something that a few lucky folks get to do, to the norm for many. At first, everyone thinks working from home will be about endless cups of tea, and staying in your PJs all day. However, the reality is quite different. To be able to work from home effectively, there are some strategies you will need to use. The good news is you can read all about the most important ones in my post Create a Work Space at Home.
Creating a Work Space at Home
Ideally, you will have a room that can serve as a home office. This could be a spare bedroom, a dedicated office, or even a converted summer house in the garden. However, there is no need to worry if you do not have this kind of space available as it is possible to create space for an office area elsewhere.
Some good alternatives include working at the kitchen or dining room table, which can be particularly successful if it’s only you at home during the day. Alternatively, some have found success by sectioning off a part of a room such as a lounge or a bedroom and finding a small folding desk to use in this space.
Make Sure You Have the Right Equipment
To be able to work effectively from home, you need to have the correct equipment. This means that you will need access to the items you use at work. This may include a computer, a comfortable chair, a footrest, a backrest, etc. You may also need access to a printer or scanner depending on your role.
In addition to ensuring you have the right equipment, you will also need to make sure that it continues to work correctly. That’s the part I dread as I hate anything technical. To that end, be sure to maintain items like your computer and fix the problems like poor wifi connection as soon as possible. Otherwise, your productivity and could suffer and stress levels go through the roof. I know first hand!!!
Set Yourself a Schedule and Stick To It
It’s easy to believe that when you’re not working in the office, you don’t have to stick to any kind of routine. However, without a schedule work and life can easily merge together, making both more difficult. With that in mind, setting yourself a reasonable schedule that includes enough time to do tasks mindfully, and having plenty of breaks is best for your long-term productivity and wellbeing.

Spend At Least Some Time Outside With People
When it comes to working effectively at home it is important that you don’t stay at your desk all day. You need to take a break once in a while, leave your desk and go outside daily. Take a half hour walk in your lunch break, it will do you the world of good. This is because getting outside can be beneficial. You get some fresh air to clear your head, exercise, and face-to-face interaction with other people. A little interaction with others is important. Most people that have been working from home have said they missed interacting with others.
These tips can make a big difference to your mental and physical well-being. They will also help you to work as effectively and easily from home as possible.
How would you go about Creating a Work Space at Home?

I need to do this. I basically just do all my work from the couch, which can get rather distracting.
It can, especially when others are home. I try to get as much work done when the kids are at school as that helps.
I really enjoyed reading this post, these are really helpful tips for creating a workspace at home.
Thanks Tasheena. I am glad you enjoyed reading this.
I have a work space and the more clutter free it is the better in my opinion. I like the suggestion to section off part of a room, that’s what we do as we don’t have a spare room/ office space.
Yes, keeping it clutter free really does help.
My friend works from home and has really created a lovely office space for herself.
It can be nice to have a separate space. It helps so much with focus.
I think it is important to have your own space. I need to be able to step away from it and call it a day.
It is important for our well being.
It makes such a different having a desk and an office space. I love having my dedicated work area at home, I feel so much more productive,
It really does help increase your focus.
I do not have a work space, I work wherever it is quieter and it works well for me, having a schedule is the important thing as it is is easy to let work take over and you find yourself working all hours.
Having a schedule can be important and can help keep you focused on what needs to be done.
Working from home is great! I partly work from home, and agree that it is important to create a designated work space. Spending some time outside is probably the most important tip, as its not good to stay cooped up inside!
It really isn’t good to stay indoors. Fresh air and chatting to others can really do wonders for our mental health.
Honestly, I would love to have an official work space in my home. Right now I just don’t have the room to do it, seriously true.
I know what you mean. I have to use my living room. It can be hard to concentrate when others come home as it gets noisy.
Thanks for the tips. I would really love to have my work space when I would have a wider place .
A separate room would be ideal but isn’t always possible.
Having a workspace is really important. I work from home so I really need my space.
I feel for you, it can be hard when you don’t have a dedicated area.
I would love to have a bigger workspace, that would be amazing!!!
It can be nice to have a bit of space for a desk and everything else you need.
I really like your work area! Looks refreshing with a view to the garden. I only have a work table in the bedroom but would love to have a work area myself….
A good view can really help relax the mind.
I wish I had my own room for an office but at the moment I just have a desk in my bedroom
I hope that you get your own space soon out of the bedroom.
I feel very lucky that I have my own office space at home as it makes me feel so much more comfortable working. I think it’s important to have a space separate from where you relax if you can x
It can as it allows you to relax much better.
Creating a working space at home is a must, especially for us moms to avoid distractions.
It can be important although finding the space can be hard sometimes.
I need to create a better workspace at home. There are far too many distractions! Thanks for the useful ideas.
Good luck Marya, I hope you manage to do so soon.
I’ve been needing to make a better place for me to work and this post really helps give me ideas! Right now all it is is me and my computer but I think I’m ready to expand it!
I hope you manage to sort out a comfy spot to work in your home.
That is beautiful home office. Fun to work and enjoy the nature too. I love this kind of lot sun shined rooms.
It’s lovely as there is natural sunlight plus a great view.
I have always worked from home and having a dedicated work space, that’s well organised, has really made a big difference.
That’s great to hear. I’m sure it helps you focus on your work better and relax better after.
Great tips here. It has taken me ages to be able to get the perfect work space sorted for myself at home but I think I have finally cracked it.
Oh wow, that’s great to hear!
We are lucky to have been able to make space for both my husband and I to work from home. I’ve always had a wee corner of our box room, with one half for storage and the other half for me and it even has a window. My husband used to work in an office, but now works permanently from home so we converted the spare/ guest room for him. Much to my eldest son’s disappointment, who had his eyes set on getting that room when he starts high school next year but now he will have to continue sharing with his brother.
It’s important to prioritise. An office space is of course very important when running a business from home.
I love this. Having set up a proper working space has allowed me to not only being more productive it provides me with mental clarity.Enjoy your beautiful office, it certainly looks like the perfect place to work.
That’s great to hear. It can certainly help you focus more.
I’m definitely taking notes! Especially in this day and age, this article is very useful.
Thanks Sondra. It can help to have a dedicated work space.
Having the right equipment is important. I cannot focus on my work if my room is not properly set up
