Avoiding Problems When Travelling
#ad
If like me you’re getting a little stir crazy by now then why not start planning your next road trip for when things return to normal. A day trip or a short trip away can be really good fun, a nice change of scenery as well as easier on the pocket than a full blown break away. The fun thing is deciding where to go. How does a day at the beach sound, or a day or weekend in the countryside?
Many of us are talking about buying local, holidaying in the UK etc once the pandemic is over. There are all sorts of wonderful places in the UK where we can visit whether we are looking to travel with or without children. Anyone fancy babysitting my 3? If you keep your eyes peeled you may find an amazing deal in one of the various hotels in the UK.
There are various things that can go wrong when we travel. I’m one of those overly organised people that like to avoid foreseeable issues and hopefully, this post will help you do the same.
Write a Checklist
When I have planned to go away I always write a list of what to take. I hate forgetting things and a list helps reduce the risk or avoid that happening. There are all sorts of things that you can forget when preparing to go on holiday. The checklist will help you avoid forgetting some of them.
Car Safety Checks
As well as preparing a list of what you’d want to take with you you’ll need to check your car if driving to the destination. It’s easy to check the basics, tyre pressure, water, oil etc. If you’re not confident enough to do it yourself then Halfords can give your car a service and check any extras so you need looked at. Then that’s one thing off the checklist of things to do before you go.
It’s also important you have a car insurance that will cover various things including key and breakdown cover. If like me you err to the side of caution fully comprehensive cover is the way to go so that in the event of an accident you are covered sufficiently. Make sure you’re using a highly rated insurance company that has good reviews on Trust Pilot.
Unforeseen Issues
You’ve booked a trip for the family and one of the kids has just come down with chicken pox. It’ll be sods law that this is the first trip you will have had in a while. Make sure you’ve got insurance. A good travel insurance will cover you for unexpected illnesses and will allow you to claim back costs.
Make Full Use of the Time
It is a good idea when travelling with children to make sure that you plan out the trip. Not all children are content with sitting for hours in a car or looking at historical buildings no matter how much they excite the adults in the group. Consider researching the area so you can take them to local parks, soft plays etc. on your way to or way back from the destination. If you are staying somewhere for a few days if there are activities there make full use of them. Mine love swimming and will take every opportunity to use pools when we go away.
First Aid Kit
It’s always a good idea to have a first aid kit handy. You never know what you’ll need one for. If you’re planning on plenty of walking blisters are always a possibility. Children are forever falling over so a good supply of plasters and antiseptic wipes will come in handy.
Food and Drink
Every trip in the car will require the obligatory food and drink snacks. Plenty of water, veg, carrots sticks and a few not so healthy snacks can help ward off the hunger pangs. Be prepared and buy in advance or allow extra time on the day to grab ready prepared items before you head off. No “mummy I’m hungry” will be chiming from the back of the car if you do this.
Entertainment
Little ones need something to keep them busy. Colouring in sheets and crayons, ipads, ipods it all depends on the age. We quite like the games we can all get involved in like who can spot the next red car first or eye spy. There is plenty to do so boredom shouldn’t be an issue. Think ahead and plan activities for children. That’ll help reduce the urge to leave them at the next rest stop.
Travelling Abroad
Travelling abroad with kids can be great fun. The whole going to a different country, seeing new things, trying new foods, enjoying the weather and activities is very exciting. When travelling abroad you may want to hire a sanitised car to be able to get around and see the sites etc. It’s far easier than relying on public transport and much more convenient.
What tips would you advise to avoid preventable issues when travelling?

I really agree that it is important to plan ahead. Things like checking the weather are also important so that you can pack adequate clothing. As is checking the traffic to avoid being stuck on the road.
That’s true. It is important to look at the weather too to make sure you pack appropriately.
Great tips! Snacks are a must in our car too, as well as endless entertainment for all three children 🙂
I totally agree that both are very important.
These are some good ideas, I think we all need to try and remember to plan before travelling, it can be simple to forget something we need.
It can, and it’s typical it’ll be something that we’ll need too!
I swear by checklists too because you can guarantee, without one there will always be something I forget. Checklists keep me on track and organised when I’m travelling, wouldn’t be without them!
Tell me about it. I always do list to prevent things being left behind.
I totally agree with all these tips, travelling with children can be stressful so preparing for everything is a must especially to stop the arguments that seem to come from no where
lol, yes it is important. As a mum you need to predict what might happen and put things in place to avoid these things happening.
Food and drinks is always our major problem! They seem to eat and drink the stuff we have available then want even more, usually when there is nowhere to stop!
That’s kids for you. It’s important to work out the amount you will normally use and take extra.
Oh this is a great post for those traveling with children! It’s never easy and mostly unpredictable but it’s good to prepare as much as you can.
It is best to prepare. It helps make travelling sooooo much easier!!!
Great tips, holiday insurance is always a must for us especially when you have kids! Holidays aren’t cheap, especially when you have to go in the summer holidays and insurance is so inexpensive most of the time but can really save you so much money if anything should happen! xx
It’s true. Insurance is very important. If you shop around you should get a good one at a reasonable price.
You are so right, we have already planned on where to go for a day trip with the UK soon as the ban is lifted as we are in need of a short holiday. Thanks for the tips on keeping safe.
I hope you have a lovely time when you finally get to go x
There are some really good hints and tips here for sure. the key one is deffo the car safety checks for sure xx
Car checks are important. Safety is always a top priority.
We had a holiday to Spain in Feb half term and were so disappointed to find that the pools were closed, despite doing lots of research. I should have looked at trip advisor
Oh no. That happens sometimes during certain times of the year so it is best to do your research just in case.
We always ensure that we have an emergency box in the boot of the car with towels, spare clothes etc. – just in case
That is good. Making things easily accessible especially when you have kids is important.
What fab tips, I can’t wait to get back in our car for a family adventure, even the boys grumbling are we nearly there will be a bit of a novelty right now!
I know what you mean. I’d love to get away for a short break.
I couldn’t agree more with bringing food and drink! We don’t have kids but are two very hungry adults and snacking makes long rides a bit easier!!
Katie xoxo
It sure does make a difference. We always take plenty of snacks wherever we travel.
Lists are a must for our family – prevent so many issues – happy travel
