This gorgeous chocolate cupcake recipe is one you will love. The cupcakes are rich, moist and delicious. The buttercream is deliciously smooth and super easy to make. These look great and are fun treats for kids. Make them with or without candy floss, the choice is yours. You’ll soon find that these chocolate cauldron cupcakes will be your kids and your favourite treats whether you make them for Halloween or any other time of year.

Chocolate Cauldron Cupcakes

Ingredients for the Cupcakes

45 g cocoa powder

4.5 – 5 tbsp water boiled

3 medium eggs

190 g softened unsalted butter

180 g caster sugar

130 g plain flour

1 and 1/2 tsp baking powder

Ingredients for the Icing

175g softened unsalted butter

350g icing sugar

1 x 15 g tube Dr Oetker Green food colour gel (use the whole tube)

1/2 tsp Dr Oetker vanilla bean paste

1-2 tbsp milk

To Decorate You Will Need

Rainbow Nerds

Edible eye decorations

candy floss (optional) – this needs to be added when serving as it starts to melt after 10-20 minutes due to the water in the air.

Method for the Cupcakes

Preheat the oven to 160 degrees (fan assisted, 170 for a normal oven).

Place 12 muffin pages on a muffin tray or a normal tray.

Add the cocoa powder and hot water to a bowl and mix until it forms a paste.

Add in the eggs, butter, and sugar and whisk.

Then sift in the flour and baking powder, and fold until fully combined.

Spoon the mixture into the muffin cases evenly.

Bake for 13-16 minutes. Make sure the top of the cupcake springs back when it is gently pressed, or a toothpick comes out clean.

Cool on a wire tray fully before decorating.

Method For the Icing

Add the butter to a bowl and then add a third of the icing sugar and whisk gently. As it combines add in more icing sugar until it has all been mixed in.

Then add in the food colouring approx 3/4 of the tube and mix well. Add the rest of the tube if you want a deeper colour.

Pop a large star nozzle into a piping bag, add the buttercream, and gently swirl this around starting from the outside of the cupcake and swirling inwards and upwards. Make sure the top of the cupcake is all covered. Be careful not to use up all the mixture so there is enough for all 12 cupcakes.

How to Decorate

If you’re using candy floss, place pieces on the cupcake carefully so you don’t squash them and make them look dense. It needs to look like foam. This needs to be placed on the cupcakes before serving.

Sprinkle your nerds around the icing.

Place 3 or more of the edible eyes around the cupcake.
