Many of us have dreamed of owning a horse or horses at some stage. This may have been sparked from watching My Little Pony, reading Black Beauty or riding a horse at a school fete or birthday party as a child. Unfortunately, most of us will never own our own horse. We often settle for a pet that is far smaller that fits in with our lifestyle.
Horses are stunning creatures but for obvious reasons are not as easy to look after as cats or dogs. Nevertheless, they are still bought as pets and not just by those that have space as I discovered when I went to visit a local stable and riding school.
Want to Buy a Horse? What You Need to Know!
Before looking to buy any pet it makes sense to read up about it. How long do they live, the level of involvement required, how to keep them healthy, what they eat, how much exercise they need etc.
Cost
Horses are not only expensive to buy, you will also need a considerable amount to look after them. Factor in long term medical care and insurance fees when doing your calculations. In addition, there are costs for equipment that will be required. Places such as Equi Supermarket tend to be reasonably priced to may help keep costs down.
Food
The quantity and type of food horses will eat depends on their age, size, breed, taste etc. Like us, they may have preferences towards certain foods. Feed them the right amount of the correct foods to help keep them happy and healthy.
Boarding / Space
No creature likes to be cooped up. We all want space to roam freely. If you don’t have the space for a horse then it makes sense not to get one or to look at options for boarding horses safely. Good facilities will offer services including daily mucking out, grooming, providing fed and hay, walking etc.
Grooming
Horses need regular grooming to keep their skin and coat healthy and reduce the risk of skin problems arising. They’ll also need their shoes checked and stones that have been caught in them removed.
Company
Like us, horses need to have company. They tend not to be particularly fussed as to whom they have keeping them company. Housing them with other animals can help considerably, it doesn’t have to be other horses.
As you can see, horses need quite a bit of care and attention. Although they make wonderful pets, there is a fair amount to think through before opting to buy one. I’d love one myself but instead have 3 kids and a husband to keep me busy!!!
Do you love horses too? Would you consider owning one? Are there any particular types you prefer?

I have a friend who has just bought a horse and she says it’s a lot of hard work but so worth it! Definitely a lot to consider before taking the plunge.
I think its every little girls dream to own a horse of her own, but the upkeep is super expensive. We’ll just settle with horse riding lessons and stable management for the time being x
Oh what an interesting article. I actually never knew that buying a horse required so much to know about. Good post!
I’m sure my daughter would love to have one but we are not able to own one at least right now. The cost of owning a horse is really high and they also need a lot of love and care. We wouldn’t have time for that at the moment, but maybe in the future.
I would love to purchase and own a farm with lots of horses. This would be a dream but definitely not happening for me now as we live on Long Island and there is not much room for horses. I do enjoy going to the horse farms though…as there are a few here and I love horse back riding 🙂 Nothing better! I love this and when we do move….. a horse is for sure on my radar 🙂
oh amazing!!! I knew nothing regarding buying a horse, never even thought of what i would do if i am to buy one! Amazing information, thank you.,
My niece wanted to have a little pony when she was 3 years old. Unfortunately, she did not get one because no one could take care of a horse.
My sister-in-law had a horse years ago…it such a majestic thing to do. I wish I had more space but I think it’s really cool.
There is some sound and sensible advice here. I think people forget how much hard work owning a horse is as well as the financial cost xx
I have never thought of buying a horse although my daughter has asked me a few times, so it is good to know these tips if we do buy one in the future
I’d love to own a horse one day, in fact I’ve done my BHS level 1 and spent a year working at stables and no just how much work and money goes into keep a horse safe and healthy, not sure I will ever have that much disposable money tbh
