Should You Start Your Own Business?

Collaborative post. With the work environment changing for a very large amount of the population over recent years, many have been considering their options. It has become popular and easier to open a business but then again, should you start your own online business?  Running a business isn’t for everyone. But, it does come with numerous perks and can often be run easily once set up when the right measures are put in place. Let’s take a look for those considering starting their own business so they can answer the question should you start your own online business?

Should You Start Your Own Business?

Can You Handle the Pressure?

When you work for others you are guaranteed a set, steady paycheck. When you run your own business as the owner you will often find it’ll take a while to build up. This means you’ll need to be able to cover outgoings whilst the business is growing into something profitable. You’ll also need to expect to work long hours depending on the type of business. This may mean temporarily sacrificing some work-life balance. You also have to be ready to cope with the pressure of making some big decisions and of having to wait for the outcomes of those decisions with all of the uncertainty that can bring.

Do You Have a Good Idea for a Business?

In order to start any business, you need a good business idea. This needs to be something you believe in. Something you have researched and where possible is completely different from other products on the market. If you can fill a gap in the market with something that people will find useful and are certain to use and isn’t overly expensive to make then you may be onto something. It’s important to spend adequate time developing the product and creating a must have item that is either unique or superior to its competitors. Of course, you can always run with someone else’s idea, whether as a partnership with them or by starting a franchised business.

Starting Your Business

In order to start your business, you will have to know the basics of how to start a company. There are a number of things to consider when looking to start your own business. You don’t simply decide you want to run one.  If you plan on only being self-employed, then a sole proprietorship might be the best fit but a limited liability company is recommended for most businesses. This sets up the business as a distinct legal entity from you individual and offers a level of protection. This allows you to take slightly more risk in how you seek to grow the business.

Creating a Business Plan

Take your time to create a business plan. This needs to be thorough to help you avoid many of the most common mistakes that small business owners make.  This business plan should contain SMART goals for your business. These can be assessed as the business progresses and updated. It should also include long-term aims that you can use as your guiding principles in how you make decisions. Your business plan should also include all of the practicalities, such as how you’re going to budget the business’s funding, how the internal processes work, how you’re going to get your products or services in the hands of your consumers, and more.

Are YOU Ready to Take On ALL the Responsibility?

There’s nothing wrong with not being ready to take responsibility for a whole business, which can include any number of employees. It can come with all sorts of situations that you will need to negotiate around. You’ll be responsible for making all sorts of decisions from hiring to firing employees, new or updated goal-setting, as well as the outcomes of any of the projects, including the failures alongside the win along the way. You can hire specific individuals to handle certain aspects of the work to help relieve some of the pressure.

How Well Do You Work Well with Others?

When you are running a business you need to know how to communicate with staff, suppliers and your clients where required. Good communication skills are key. Alternatively, having an individual that can do this for you is a great option.

Once you have considered these points it’s time to decide Should You Start Your Own Business?

Are there any other areas that readers should consider before starting a business?

These are all important considerations to think about. You really have to know what you’re getting into when you decide to start a business.

    1. admin

I agree. It’s important to do plenty of research.

  2. Tracy Iglesias

I’ve been a serial digital entrepreneur for quite awhile. I think it is important to stress as mentioned here that it is *not* for everyone. There is a serious time commitment involved, you work more hours for yourself than when you work for someone else.

    1. admin

Yes, that is very true. It can depend very much on the job you take on.

  3. Heather Castillo

Starting a business isn’t for the faint of heart. But I believe if you have a dream, you should always go after it, no matter the risk.

    1. admin

It is good to follow your dreams whether they work out or not. The important thing is that you know you’ve tried.

A lot of us want to start our own business. But don’t have the courage to start. Finding a budget is also a huge factor.

    1. admin

I totally understand. I was the same but I bit the bullet and went for it. It’s amazing what you can do even on the smallest budget.

These factors to consider when starting a small business could help you to eliminate the risks and obstacles you’ll face on the journey – take note to help prepare you for success! Thank you so much for sharing

Thanks so much for visiting Brianne. These factors are helpful and are a good start for those looking to start a business.

It is great to start a business but it is a huge responsibility. It can be hard to switch off from work and can sometimes be stressful but it is so worth it

    1. admin

It is a huge responsibility. It’s one of those things you need to weigh up to see if it is something you really want to take on.

Starting a business does come with a great deal of pressure. These are really great things to think about when thinking starting a business.

    1. admin

It sure does but in many cases is really worth the initial pressure.

  8. Rhian Westbury

I think it’s about having a really good plan for your business and knowing there’s a gap in the market. If there’s a gap there’s more of a chance of it going right x

    1. admin

Honestly, if the product is good and there is a gap I’d say go for it!

  9. Talya Stone

I think your first point is a really important one. It is about being able to handle the pressure because owning your own business can be a real rollercoaster which you need to be able to desensitize yourself to.

    1. admin

That is very true but it can also be really good fun and help you create an additional income or more.

  10. Jennifer Prince

These are such important questions to ask. I feel like people sometimes plunge in without knowing what it really takes.

    1. admin

I know what you mean. It’s brave but not necessarily a good idea. Research is the key to success and is weight up whether the idea will work or not. Some things are destined to fail but then some can’t see what’s in front of their noses even when advised against doing something.

Great tips! Creating a business isn’t easy but having structure and goals helps.

    1. admin

They certainly do. You need to be organised to set things out clearly and to forward think as well as be adaptable.

I started my online business with my sister way back in 2017 on IG and it works well for us until this pandemic came and we decided to stop because of the lockdowns. We make some notes as well on how we will handle our business and I must say it was not easy. Thanks for the tips.

    1. admin

I hope that business has improved since then, It is hard going and there will always be ups and downs but sometimes you need to be able to adapt to make things work for you.

  13. Tammy

I think you definitely need to have a plan in mind. You need to do your research and understand that running your own business isn’t some overnight sensation and requires 24/7 work. Long term though, it’s so worth it if you have what it takes to make it successful!

  14. Neha Khanuja

This is such a thoughtful post for people thinking to start a new business! A sound business plan is most def required.

Some fabulous tips here for those on the brink of starting a new business but stuck and wondering how to go about it

  16. Fransic verso

Great suggestions, I think we should start a business and keep growing slowly until we make it.

  17. Lani Lyutz

Yep, it’s easy to think of opening one, but you have to consider other factors first like budget and time 🙂

  18. Rosey

Part of me wants to and part of me is scared. Financial security is so very important right now.

  19. jen schreiner

Great tips. Starting a business requires a lot of thought.

  20. Angela Ricardo Bethea

I think we all need a solid plan and commitment if we really want to start our own business. Those are some great points to add as well and would be good to keep in mind.

  21. Blair Villanueva

Being your own boss is better (no matter what business venture you have), than being an employee. You manage your own time, hence, you can make more money and more opportunity.

  22. Melissa Cushing

I love this and I think anyone that wants to start a business should! It is a wonderful thing to be your own boss but there is a lot of sacrifice required the first few years….. thank you for sharing and inspiring!

  23. ashleigh

I would love to do this but I am a bit scared to try!

  24. Mari Sutherland

Good points. Very important when starting your own business is being realistic about how much time it could take up and how this translates into an hourly rate. You can find you are working for well below minimum wage.

  25. Wendy Lam-Vechi

My husband has always dreamed of starting his own business but rent is so expensive in London and we calculated that we would make loss for the first year from getting all the equipment needed and with a family to support, it is not something we can risk

  26. Josie Mellor

Great article. I’ve always had a secret yearning to start my own business. Maybe I will one day . . .

  27. Coldi

My husband started a business in 2017. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart. Lots of people say to him – you can have time off whenever you want! But there’s no sick pay, no annual holiday pay etc!
Realistically he works 7 days a week. He works all day and then comes home and does paperwork until 10pm. He does love his job, we just didn’t realise how tough it would be on our family when he started.

  28. Danika Lloyd

I loved running my own business pre kids but after kids didn’t feel like I could give both 100% so stepped back

  29. Laura

I’d love to start my own business but the whole start up details just put me off as I wouldn’t know where to begin

  30. Nigel Soper

I think business is away of thinking, which, as a scientist, I don’t have. In a large corporation there would always be numbers of experts who earn more than you do to help out, but starting on your own you do need a business head.

    1. admin

You certainly do. It can help no end.

  31. Gemma Hendry

great article and the considerations are a lot to think about if you were thinking of starting a business

    1. admin

There can be. It’s important to be on top of things and aware of anything that will affect the business positively and negatively.

  32. Patricia Avery

Never been a dream of mine but good luck to anybody who is passionate about an idea, researches well. Go ahead. you won’t have the ‘what if…’ scenario in the future

  33. Jeanette Leighton

I wouldn’t mind having my own business but with 2 small children they occupy a lot of my time . Maybe once they are a bit older I would reconsider
