(#ad) There are few things in life more exciting than moving to a new home. A fresh start can often be a sign of good things to come. Moving forward in your life can be an incredibly important thing to do. But, that doesn’t mean that it’s not also one of the most stressful things too. Moving home is often listed alongside losing your job or having a baby as one of the biggest causes of stress. But does it have to be that way? Well, not really. Although you’ll never avoid all of the stress of moving home, you can make the process a little easier.
Start Preparing Early
One of the most common mistakes that people make is that they simply leave everything too late. People assume that they have plenty of time and then end up failing to realise just how quickly time has caught up with them. This then means that they end up rushing around in a total panic trying to get everything done at once, losing things, packing in a disorganised way (resulting in breakages), and generally making life much harder for themselves than it needs to be. By being prepared and starting early, you can take your time, think things through, and make the whole process far easier.
Plan of Action
One of the very best ways that you can make sure that you’re always on top of everything about your move and that nothing ends up lost or left behind is to make a clear plan. Make sure you have plenty of boxes in advance. Think about each room separately. Consider how long it will take you to pack everything up. Think about which items you can pack early on and which will need to be dealt with a little later. Once you have done this, pack what you can as soon as you can. Allow for flexibility but have a basic plan and you’ll feel much more in control of the entire process and reduce stress levels.
Make Use of Storage Units
One of the most stressful and frustrating things about moving house is being surrounded by boxes. Not only is it simply inconvenient to have boxes cluttering up your living space (which you have packed early), but it can also end up making you feel very unsettled to have your stuff piled up in boxes all around you. In some cases, it might actually work better for you to hire a self storage unit. Now Storage self storage in Swindon is ideal for those located in London. That way you have a place to keep your belongings both before and after the move takes place and it makes life so much more relaxed.
Unpack Carefully
Once in your new home, you can just unbox the boxes in your own time. You might find that by doing this you can declutter as some of the items are unnecessary or don’t fit with the style of your new home. In that case, sell them off surplus items on one of the various selling platforms the extra cash will come in handy.
Summary
There are always going to be things about moving home that are going to make you feel stressed and anxious no matter what you do. Moving is always going to be pretty far from a relaxing experience but by taking this advice you can reduce some of the stress involved and maybe even find time to sit and put your feet up.
What advice would you give someone moving home for the first time?

That’s helpful,Thanks for sharing! I’m interested in these tips as I am moving soon.
I hope all goes well with the move Gagan.
The last time we moved we paid for people to pack all our things and unpack the other end, it was amazing!
It sounds it! It is much easier to do that where you can.
My advice would be to get all of your friends involved!!
That can help a lot if your friends are able to. Great tip!
Great tips! When we shifted last time. We bought many big cartons to pack our stuff. It was easier to unpack as well. I liked your idea of utilizing the storage.
It really can help free up space. When the home is cluttered it can make you feel stressed. You’ve enough stress moving so storage can be ideal to make the process easier and more manageable.
I make a checklist and keep it handy then I do a last minute check to be sure I have everything.
Good job. Checklists can be really helpful!
Moving house is something that I have done quite a few times before and causes no end of stress! Love a lot of the tips you have included here. It’s really best to start the planning process as early as possible as there is always so much more to do than you think. Thankfully we don’t have to move that often!
I agree, the earlier you can start planning and preparing the less stressful it will be.
It is always helpful to have a game plan ahead of time! I always like labeling our boxes and putting them directly into the rooms they belong in at the new place.
That’s a great way to help keep everything organised.
With these tips I am sure home moving isn’t a big deal, In fact we shifted last year and it was a huge mess. Glad I learned these hacks here.
It’s a shame I didn’t write this sooner. These tips are exactly what those moving for the first time especially need to be aware of.
ohh my…this is awesome easy as I do scard & imagine the hassles of moving home each time. Thanks for sharing this. cheers, sienny
Glad you liked the post. It’s best to be prepared I find.
Some great tips, i dont like moving home, its one of those things like putting up wallpaper etc that i just don’t like doing, i would rather pay someone to move us, I’m happy at the end when we are in our new place, but the process of it i don’t like.
I’m with you, the actual process isn’t fun but the new house can be fantastic once you are there.
Moving home is so stressful, we went through it 2 years ago. Great tips, especially the start preparing early and unpack carefully tips.
Thanks Lilinha. It’s a big thing to have to manage. Anything that takes a bit of stress off helps.
Moving home is stressful, great post for those who are moving soon to help make it a little easier
Thanks Samantha. It’s good to know what to expect.
These are all good tips for a stress-free move. I would also add don’t start too early. People freak out and think they won’t have time and then they end up living in a mess for weeks before the move. Months sometimes. I am more of a late starter. Change scares me. I delay it. So I definitely need to start early 🙂
I think you’ll find this very useful when you next need to move then. Thanks for visiting.
Your tips are great! Moving house entails a lot of planning and preparation. I remember when I was young and my parents decided to move to a different place. They labeled the boxes with our names/rooms and put a large number on them. They had a list as to how many boxes there are and whose stuff is in a certain box number. It was also easier for them to know if all boxes have been unloaded from the truck because they are numbered.
That sounds like a great idea. How organised. It can really help to avoid things going walkabouts.
Moving houses can be very overwhelming, i have been in that situation many times. Thank you for all these tips.
Thanks for visiting Mary. It is hard going but a necessary evil quite often.
These are great tips, we have moved so much you would think we would have packing and moving down to a fine art, but we always leave things to the last minute!
Oh dear. I suppose it depends on how much notice you have before you need to move.
Great article! Is there any reason why you moved?
Hi Oscar. Yes, we were looking for somewhere with better school options.
2 years ago, I had moved and it was the most painful experience. I wish I had read your post before doing that.
It helps to plan everything out. That can help relieve so much stress. I hope you are happy in your new home.
An interesting post, thank you for sharing. Moving home turned me into a minimalist. I saw how much clutter I had and wondered why I didn’t see it before I moved with it. Never again.
I wish we could do that. With 3 kids it is a work in progress.
Some great and useful tips here indeed, I have moved home and countries so have some experience in packing. So important to have an action plan and lists.
An action plan and list is the way to go!
Moving is so stressful! My friend moved country two weeks ago and I helped her out with all the packing and last minute cleaning etc! Great tips 🙂
Thanks Kristina. That sounds exciting. hope she settles in well.
you guys really tried.. there is always stress when moving to new apartment..planning on time is the best.
Planning really makes a big difference. It helps to be prepared.
These are good tips! I’ll add “take your time” to the list.
That is provided you can. Some people have to move fast. It helps to plan and start well in advance especially if there is a lot to move.
When I was just new in my job I moved to many places and changed a lot of houses and I agree with all your points here. I will 1 more thing, Collect ALL the right keys from the previous owners!
Ha, yes you don’t want them popping in after you have moved in, although I think the estate agent would normally take care of that.
Using the storage unit is one of the lifesavers especially if your new place got limited storage. Moving into a new place is very stressful, we did last July and it was a full month before we finally settled.
It can take ages to move in. Storage can help avoid having the place cluttered and reduce stress.
Totally agree that it’s better to start as early as possible. And don’t think that you have a lot of things to pack just keep going.
It’s amazing how much stuff we all accumulate.
We’ve moved so many times over the last few years I’d definitely say we were professionals 🙂
ha, so I’m sure you’ll agree with these tips then.
Great advice! My top tips would probably be to not be afraid to ask for help, start packing early for any non essentials you dont need to use and have a box full of bits you will need straight away like a change of clothes, pjs, kettle etc in your car or somewhere you can easily find and get to once you get into your new place!
Asking for help can relieve some of the stress. Having a box of essentials that is easily accessible is very important.
Moving to another home need at least planning a week or two before. This is going to help when we move later. Thank you for sharing!
I would start earlier. Once I knew we were moving I started to try to clear out things I didn’t need to reduce the amount that we needed to move.
Great tips in the post. I like storage units. SO much better than it all under your feet.
It sure is. No one like sit when their home is messy and packed with boxes.
Moving house can be one of the most stressful tines, so these are really good tips to take away the strain x
It sure can. I’ve done it twice as an adult. Both times we’re organised well so not too stressful thankfully.
Very helpful post. It will help a lot …. Moving home is very difficut if we dont plan properly. Thanks for the share.
It sure is. Planning is the key to it running smoothly.
We might be moving soon so bookmarked this post-rhanks for the really useful tips!
Glad you found this useful Jenna. good luck with the move.
